Very close call coming home from work last night. Weather seemed fine, but the highway was covered in a sheet of black ice. Major car pile up and I came pretty close to being part of it. Close enough that I had my brake to the floor and I was still sliding toward a mess of about twenty cars with their four way flashers on, stopped in the road. Some had smashed into each other, some had completely gone off the road into the ditches and I was skidding directly into this. It was tense enough I actually said out loud that I'm only five months away from having my car paid off and I'm about to total it.
Car literally caught a grip at the last moment and I pulled over to the shoulder behind a bunch of other cars that had also cleared the road. I put my fourway flashers on because I knew whoever was coming behind me was probably going to plow right into me and sure enough another car comes tearing up in my rear view mirror. Guy knew he wasn't going to get stopped and actually swerved into the opposite lane and somehow managed to tear right through the accident scene without hitting anything.
A few people ahead of me already stopped started to get out of their cars to see if they could go help, as soon as their feet touched the asphalt they started sliding and quickly got back in their cars.
Today at work I found that a lot of the people in the accident and on scene were like me, we had just got off work and a whole herd of us were taking the highway home. A guy in my shop said he was the first car in the line and that a car coming in the opposite direction started sliding into oncoming traffic. He said he actually hit his gas and drove up onto the shoulder of the road and the oncoming car just missed him but collided head on with the car directly behind him and that set off a chain reaction. I got lucky as I was in the rear and at least had a chance to hit the brake and slide to a stop.
It happened right near a highway exit so a bunch of us immediately got off the highway. Even the exit was covered in black ice, and on a downward slope so we had to space out and let each other slide down it. Took and extra half an hour to get home but worth it not to have a damaged or destroyed car. Closest I've ever been to being involved in a vehicle vs vehicle wreck.
No one was killed or badly injured that I know of, but a few people definitely had their cars written off.
