Windstorms and -27 temperatures scheduled for Friday and Saturday. It’s my off weekend so I hope we don’t lose power. I won’t be out walking my 12 miles if we get that.

I know some places, especially Canada, are getting it much worse than the Northeast US with the cold temperatures and horrible storms. But I'm not used to the lows we're having. Zero degrees (F) does not a functional winter make 🥶
I can't remember the last time it hit zero twice in one winter (the other time being Christmas weekend).
I also can't remember the last time that it hit zero as a low one day and then was scheduled to hit a high of 40 the next day. And a high of 60 the next day. Mother Nature took up witchcraft 🧙♀️

We're in day 2 of a snow squall. Actually surprised our power is still currently on. I looked outside and it's just complete white. I pity anyone who went into work yesterday and today and I especially pity the people who have to drive home from work from night shift. If I had been working this weekend I probably would have called in Friday and today. Absolutely zero visibility right now. It is supposed to end late this afternoon though and by tomorrow temperatures are supposed to go back up. Glad I don't have to be anywhere this weekend.

Storm finally over and temperature has gone up to -12 with no wind which is a big improvement from white out winds at -27. Found out the highway actually got shut down yesterday as a fuel tanker ended up tipping over. Kinda surprised the RCMP didn't close the highways earlier. I've seen them do that before. They'll actually have cars sitting at the highway on-ramps with their lights on and tell people the highway is closed. It was brutal for me. 200+ year old house didn't stay very warm (and still isn't). Even with a space heater in my bedroom a glass of water still managed to ice over. Actually turned the water off because of possible bursting pipes. Not even trying to dig my car out, I just turned it on and will let it sit in the drive way and defrost out. High winds actually kept the snow from building up anyway, so roads and driveway look fine today. Someone told me 1917 was the last recorded time in my area we had a squall that got that cold.

Glad things have improved and have left the emergency condition range. That sounded like a horrible night with overwhelming, Lovecraftian "creeping" style cold. Those space heaters just can't keep up with it.
Things improved here. It's crazy how happy I was to see just a low of 20 the night after.
I heard New Hampshire set new records for cold + wind chill with something like -108 F.

My bros I saw snow this week. Snow. In the San Francisco Bay Area. I cannot emphasize enough how wild that is. The last time I can remember seeing snow near my home was in 1989.
Edit: Obviously I do not have it anywhere near as bad as some of ya'll but goddamn just seeing snow around here blows my entire mind.

"Dogs and cats living together" 👻❄
That is really wild. You must have done a few double takes there.
Hopefully you got to at least enjoy some of the fun parts of the snow before it gets grey, yellow, and gross. I also hope things don't ice over. Those SF street cars gliding down ice sounds like a bad theme park ride idea.
It hasn't really snowed that much this season 'round these parts but the two things that are very uncharacteristic are the persistent, extreme cold and the wild 30+ degree temperature swings every few days. Winter is usually just hunkering down in consistent 25-30 degree with occasion snow and bad winds. Now it's figuring out how to make sense and cope with 55 degrees and 10 degrees within the same 24 hour period. No, not built for that. Feels like traveling through time in between winter and spring.

Right on cue, I come back from vacation and today we have a snow storm warning of 15-25cm. Well, I just got home from night shift, about to go to bed and if I wake up to a blizzard, I'll be calling in.

I’ve been to your neck of the woods once a long time ago, end of July, beginning of august. A group of us headed down there from WAAAAY up here in the frozen north for an event in Oakland (but we spent most of the trip in SF). It was 31 C (88 F) here when we left, and all of us dummy Canadian yokels were like “we’re going to California, it will be just like this, so these shorts and T-shirts we’re wearing will be fine!”. Nope. 12 C (54F) for the first few days, and no sunshine. Beautiful place, I loved every second of that trip, so many awesome things to do and see, Chinatown blew my mind, but yeah, August colder than my very high latitude Canadian city was an eye opener, and doesn’t make snow in February seem so very impossible! 😁

Got into work just as the storm was starting. A quarter of my shop has already called in. If it started an hour sooner I would have called in too. Might be a tough drive home tomorrow morning.

We never get snow, so rumors of snow started spreading people were getting excited. The towns to the north and south of us got snow but we didn't.

Thanks, but you can keep it. I was glad we didn't get snow. Our town doesn't have the equipment to handle it. It makes me think of when I was living down in LA and it rained a little bit. There were cars skidding all over the road. If I hadn't had been there seeing it I wouldn't believe it.

Hope you have a safe trip home, Nth 😎 Really crazy about how many of the Californians got snow. I heard LA got some too. With a winter this cold and volatile, I'm getting nervous about the summer!! I remember having a lot of days last summer that were in the 90's F and even got to 100. I can only assume it's going to be hotter.🌞

Couple tricky spots but made it home. When we were punching out I saw even more people called in this morning than called in last night. My shop just plodded along with who we had so there was no rush. It was just a long but easy night. I’m glad I did make it in because that will be the shift that pays for Resident Evil 4 Remake later this month.
