So......today's weather kind of sucked. Knew it was going to snow a bit but the weathermen tend to overestimate how much we'll actually see here in the city. Well, today we had the "nut" to their "blind squirrel" predicting.
When I went to work this morning, there was nothing falling. Not even sleet. About an hour after I arrived (9am), it started sleeting. Around 11am, it started turning into snow.
And it snowed.....and it snowed....and it's still snowing.
So yeah, 5 or so inches later and the roads home are a nightmare. I usually catch a ride home but the driver was understandably not going to get out into that mess. So, I ended up paying 2x the normal rate for an Uber to my place (roughly 12 miles from work) and we can't even get through the gate because there are two cars stuck at the entrance, one trying and repeatedly failing to gain traction up the driveway. I just had the Uber driver drop me off there and I walked uphill for about 10 minutes to get home.
I'm thankful that I'm home now because as bad as the roads are now (they are BAD; the city said they weren't going to pre-treat the roads because the rain would just wash it away >_>), they're going to be even worse once the sun goes down and that shit freezes solid.
Ugh.
I shouldn't be irked because we've largely escaped this sort of thing for about 4-5 years (and as I said, I made it home safely) but still, BOOOOOO!

Glad that you started a weather thread β
Very glad that you got back home in time before things got worse today! :)
That sounds like a tough commute. On the upside, you can now lecture the next generation about how, in your time, ubers didn't even go all the way home (no phase matter transport) and you had to walk uphill in snow for 10 minutes which will seem like an eternity for people in the future to be outside in π₯π·π½πΎπ΄π©
Nice line here: "Well, today we had the "nut" to their "blind squirrel" predicting." π
I think we're all in for a pretty bad winter. My guess is that January will be a snowpocalype.

Brutal. We had something similar here a week and a half ago. I'm in Canada, (not sure where you are) and in my part of Canuckistan, it usually snows on Halloween or shortly after. Rain typically ends in September, but for the past few years, we've been getting rain in late October, November and December. It pissed rain half of the day, the cold air blew in, it turned to snow, and froze solid all within the span of a few hours. The great part was the 60-80 km/hr winds mixed with snow shining up said ice. This has been a trend here for a few years now, but as shitty as it is, I feel bad for cities in the US that are far bigger than mine with a fraction of the snow removal/sanding/deicing infrastructure and budget that we have. It's shitty here for a day or five, but at least it improves, it always looks like "snowpocalype" on the news down there! Stay safe, and I hope your roads clear up soon! (incidentally, it's unseasonably nice here right now, a little cold, but barely any snow, and nice dry roads!)

We've had one storm so far and I had to drive home in it. Now that I've got all wheel drive it wasn't that bad but I'm getting the winter tires put on this Tuesday. We'll have our Christmas break coming up at the end of December and I'm probably going to take all of February off again for vacation. If I make it through December I also get my year end attendance bonus again.

Weather knocked out power at work. Got sent home early because they don't know when it's coming back on. I'm on call tomorrow morning so hopefully it stays off until at least 8am when my call in time expires.

Those of you in Canada will understand this (and may have seen this already), but this is for everyone else here, to help you understand more aboot your friendly, pot legalizing, sorry-saying, NHL hockey team roster filling buddies up in the frozen north!

Still haven't had a lot of snow here yet, although we are in another cold snap. I'm just hoping the snow holds off at least until January 30. Then I'm on vacation until March 1st.

^speaking of....
So we notice 10 inches of snow from Friday evening to Saturday evening
Normally it would have been a major hassle on the roads but atypically, the city crews were working around the clock to clear the roads, even as the snow kept falling.
The difference between yesterday and the 5 inches from November?
A Kansas City Chiefs playoff game.
Smh
Our Mayor is the most obvious false face politician that I've ever seen. He'll put on some mighty fine airs when the national spotlight is on the city but when there's no shine, the city's left to fend for itself. It's amusing and disgusting.
But yeah, MUCH easier to get to work and back yesterday than a month and a half ago when we actually had less accumulation.

Yeah, it's going to suck on Tuesday. I guess I can't complain too much since we're "only" going to have wind chills of -20.
Minneapolis and Fargo are supposed to be in the -60 range.

Yeah, it's going to suck on Tuesday. I guess I can't complain too much since we're "only" going to have wind chills of -20. Minneapolis and Fargo are supposed to be in the -60 range. Northeast Wisconsin will be in the -50s. But before that, we have a winter storm coming. My area will only get a glancing blow with maybe 6 inches, if that. But other areas, like Oshkosh WI, will get 12-15 inches with possible blizzard conditions. Then the cold arrives.

So far we're actually doing really well. Haven't had any major storms as bad as they were predicted to be, the snow has completely melted several times in December and January. It's already started melting again today. Usually our worst storms come in February which is why I take that month off, although last year February was as warm and sunny as spring with no snow whatsoever. Then when I went back to work March 1st we had a blizzard.

I think our cold snap has finally broken. I had hoped to start my vacation by getting back into my workout routine which includes putting in 12 miles of walking a day, but with sub zero temperatures plus windchill on top of that I said screw it and spent the first few days of my vacation sleeping all day and playing games all night. I got up this evening and even though it's -6 it feels like a spring day compared to how it's been the last week, so the workouts can start tomorrow morning now that the forecast says we're getting warmer temperatures at least for the next week.

Fun times in the Canadian prairies right now, Thursday of this week, it was around 5 C and a lot of the snow had melted (not all of it, not by a long shot), roads were great, good times. Thursday NIGHT, the big, slow moving snow dump started, we ended up with around 30 cm of snow (better than it could have been), and the cold air rolled in with it. It's -30 C this morning, and with the wind chill, -38 C. I don't bitch about the weather much, we have a shit ton of snow removal equipment here, and we have our famous "dry" cold, which is easier to insulate against and keep warm in, but man, frost nip/frost bite happens fast in this shit! We had RAIN last week, now this. Can't say we don't get all four seasons in this part of the world! :)

Holy crap the ice we had today. Schools were cancelled and for good reason. Everything was covered with a sheet of ice. Went out to do my morning six miles and I could skate across intersections. Only fell once and decided I wasn't gonna get the last three miles in. By noon it was all melted so I just got back from doing my evening six.
