He's truly managed to do it all over the past ten years: Tag Team, Aftermath, and Openweight Championships, and won the World Open, TagFest, and Escalation tournaments. I was updating his bio the other day to add the new Openweight reign and was blown away by how much he has accomplished and how long he has been around. It's gonna be 15 years for him next year. That's crazy to me! He's held way more titles than most of my roster and even run circles around Geese in that regard. Geese: "Yes, he does strike me as a man who circles around the drain endlessly." Saji: "You got some leftover jelly on ya collar." At this point, Saji just needs to hold the Trios championships and he'll have won every major accolade in SWA. You think he can convince Connor and Lina to compete for the Trios titles? 😁

They were in the initial tournament, but they lost out to Lords of Desolation. Maybe they'll take another shot at it at some point, but probably not while Saji is champ. It'd be a lot to hold the Openweight title and be going for the Trios title.

Man, Kazuo Saji just keeps racking up the hits in SWA. Last month at Aftermath, Saji defeated an absolutely ascendant Carlos Ortega-Reyes to become the second ever SWA Openweight Champion to defeat the winner of the World Open. In what is beginning to feel like a matter of reality trolling us all, Carlos beat Connor Cipris to win the tournament, again denying us the next Saji vs Cipris match. With Connor reportedly having fucked up his knee during the match, it sounds like we'll be denied a while longer, too. Of course, since then, Samael Tangaroa, who had disappeared after the Lords of Desolation coup last July, redebuted to attack Kazuo and declare himself the next challenger. Samael really does like to disappear for a while after suffering a major defeat, only to come back scarier than ever. Will Saji survive this challenge? Only time will tell.
Edit: While I'm here just doing some thread maintenance, moving wrestlers around, etc.

Wow, Saji making SWA history yet again!? 📜✍️ That really sucks about Connor's knee though. He's had a bad run of things lately. We need Saji vs. Connor before the decade ends! Of course, since then, Samael Tangaroa, who had disappeared after the Lords of Desolation coup last July, redebuted to attack Kazuo and declare himself the next challenger. Of course, Saji is the target of a returning Samael! 😄 Saji: "Boy had himself a good cry now wants to invite me to his pity party? B*tch gonna get got."

I've been getting back into Fire Promoter over the past week or two. I'm running a small faction (Austerity) as a promotion against other factions and promotions. We just had a great "Cross-Promotion" event against Matsuki Holdings. A few shows later, I get a report that the bad luck of Connor Cipris has continued 😔

Dammit, Connor. I don't pay attention for a couple weeks because I've got a lot going on and this is what you do with that time? For shame. For shame.

Worse, the Matsuki Holdings promotion actually went bankrupt 🤦♂️
That is the first time I've seen a rival promotion go bankrupt in Fire Promoter! The good news is that my promotion has since acquired all of their members. Connor seems to not trust our promotion though. There's also kind of an inter-promotional war going on between Matsuki and my owner's loyal group. I think the Matsuki members blame my promotion for taking all their titles (true) and see that as a reason why they went bankrupt. (possibly true). Tetsu is trying to play peacemaker between the two groups.
I have to say, Fire Promoter can be really fun if you go into the mode with a specific story and plan. Some of the random stuff that happens can really spark some ideas too.

Emergence has come and gone, and with it was a bit of a shuffling of the roster, as is usually the case. The Angry Wrasslin' Nerd has been incommunicado of late, which actually has me kind of worried; the dude can be a jerk at times but I hope he's okay. So I'll just be giving a brief rundown of the major events. Spoilers ahead, if you still intend to watch the show.

The Angry Wrasslin' Nerd has been incommunicado of late, which actually has me kind of worried; the dude can be a jerk at times but I hope he's okay. I hope he wasn't in NY the past year... Rumor has it Tess Tarler was backstage at the show. Tess has been all over the world the past year, wrestling for a variety of promotions, with still no sign of where she might ultimately sign, other than, in her words, "Not LAWL. I'll never look at an avocado the same way again." Tess TarLAWL - well there goes that pun 😁 Emi Yamazaki announced that Emergence was her last PPV show with SWA. She hasn't said for sure where she's going yet, but rumor has it she's eyeing a deal with OG-Joshi. Now OG-Joshi just needs to sort through its accumulated roster to make full sense of it... Kazuo Saji scored his fourth defense of the SWA Openweight Championship, turning back the challenger, VOLT Tsukuda, who has really come into his own in recent months as a top-tier competitor. VOLT has been on a helluva run this year so it's a huge victory for Saji!
Good on Saji for his fourth defense! 😎 Adrian Rose's appearance is awesome!

I'm actually wondering what VOLT's steady ascendance up the ranks could mean for the Vanguard as a unit. VOLT has always been willing to follow the lead of Paul Lambert, but he's never made it any secret that he also sees Paul as a rival and a target to strive for. In addition, you also have the fact that VOLT has candidly admitted before that he thinks Paul's approach to keeping SWA safe is too passive and he wishes the Vanguard would more aggressively sweep out bad actors like Murderer's Row or the Lords of Desolation. If he reaches that level of main event status, we could see cracks start to form in the faction.

Yeah, Vanguard is gonna have some internal dispute.
At best, that sounds like an interesting leadership debate. At worst, a coup.
(Or a mutiny if Vanguard is taken to the seas!)
It all depends on how aggressively VOLT will advocate for, and realize, his vision for them.

SWA Breakdown was tonight! I was at work most of the evening and didn't get to give the show my full attention, but I'll try to have some analysis in the coming days. What I do have for you right now, though, is some video.
SWA Aftermath Championship: Bobby Wilder vs. Adrian Rose SWA Joshi Championship: Brianna Dalton vs. Mieko Suzuyama SWA Openweight Championship: "Nasty" Adam Nishimura vs. Kazuo Saji

For a lot of SWA fans, this was considered something of a routine PPV, with no title changes, and no truly ascendant standout matches. Overall, I think, there were two major narratives fans got out of the show: 1.) Bobby Wilder is not as invincible as people thought. Wilder seemed to be riding an unstoppable wave of momentum in 2024, and especially after how strong he looked in the Escalation tournament, many thought the golden boy of BHB could do no wrong. But the Wilder Wave broke across the wall that was Adrian Rose Sunday night. Looking at online discussions today, a lot of fans' faith in Wilder has been shaken. Personally, I think how he responds to this loss will be the important part. Wilder is still early in his career, with many years left to improve and climb the card, but this is the first major setback he's faced since bursting onto the scene in SWA last year, and the real test of a wrestler is not how they handle success so much as how they handle failure. 2.) Kazuo Saji almost got got. This is the biggest point I've seen people discussing today, and it's overshadowed all other discussion of the show. A lot of fans were on Saji's side when he dismissed Adam Nishimura in the lead-up to this show, but the actual result wasn't anywhere near as dominant as people expected. Plan and simple, Saji underestimated Nishimura, and it almost cost him the belt. And with Saji swiftly being taken backstage after the show, concerns are mounting about the state of his neck, especially after the combination of Nishimura's Cervical Fusion finisher and the brutal piledriver he took. For myself, as I get older and am forced to come to grips with the fact that my own body isn't as resilient as it once was (I just turned 40 a few weeks ago), I find myself thinking more and more about wrestling injuries, and I'm getting concerned about the stresses of Saji's schedule, both defending the SWA Openweight Championship and taking part in the Continuum league over in UBL. Sure, he managed to pull it out this time, but how much longer can he keep doing this? And, if what I fear is true and his neck is worse than he's letting on, what will be the long-term ramifications for his career?

Reactions to Saji/Nishimura and the news post: This was an incredible match that furthered the story we built, gave some excellent near falls, and had incredible momentum switches. I love Adam's entrance gear! Saji getting that first jab in felt fitting - just a little dash of disrespect to start the match. Early on Saji's stand up game is tight and I love the little face slap too. Early flash pin attempt also a further display of disrespect. Adam working the submissions really well early on. I love the flying jujigatame. I like how both that and Saji's flash pin caused rope breaks. Felt like a scripted match. Adam gets pissed at the disrespect and starts wailing on him with mounted punches! Saji getting in on the sub act and working that bridge game. Adam finally gets a flying jujigatame in the middle of the ring, haha. I like this strategy too as it helps neutralize Saji's strong stand up game with his punches and shoteis. Saji maybe sensing this match isn't going as smoothly as he thought it would and kicks it into the next gear. Hits the big atomic drop, big knee off the ropes, then a stylish elbow drop. Then that beautiful C2C crotch pin move. (One reason I need to get you updated Saji is the move craft modified version of that move which I call "Rug Burn" lol). Oh shit - the tide just turned in a big way! Adam hits a HUGE exploder...and now Saji's neck becomes a question. Then the question is almost answered with an exclamation mark! Adam hits the Cervical Fusion right afterward! What a huge comeback, statement, and damage delivery to Saji! Almost beat him at 9:59! Mounted punches again and Saji is covering up big time. He's not able to escape as fast. Saji with a desperation twisting complete shot! I don't know how he pulled that off. My theory is that Adam let up the mounted punches cause Saji wasn't tapping but he also wasn't able to reverse them. Maybe Saji was playing possum, got Adam to let up to try something else, but then grabbed Adam for the move. I gotta say that I absolutely love the clear switches of momentum in this match! FPW doesn't always have matches with clear phases of control and switches. This one was excellent. I love how Adam uses a chop to proactively disrupt Saji's attempted running slingblade after the strike exchange. Moment of the match may be Adam no-selling Saji's cutter, taking momentum back with big corner chops, then hitting a huge throwing german suplex....urgh, right on that neck!! Another exploder! Saji in serious danger here! At this point, even if he wins, his neck paid the price. Saji has the gall to taunt Adam after all of this! But he also no-sells Adam's flying 360 kick. And wow, what a f'n finish!! I know the heartbreak of an awesome match not being able to be used cause the wrong person won. I'm sure you were getting nervous right when Adam hit that piledriver and looked to pin Saji. It would have definitely ended the match. For Saji to not only reverse the pin but also to hit his own special immediately after to win must have felt incredible!! Not only was it an awesome finish, but it saved the match! But ouch at that piledriver...I wonder if Saji consciously reversed that pin or if his body was just kind of spasming and Adam didn't expect it. I'd go even further than saying the result wasn't as dominant...I'd say it was desperate. Saji barely walked out on his own two feet, let alone won and defended the title. Saji underestimated Nishimura, didn't put the prep in, and came into the match injured. On one hand, this points to an extremely foolish Saji. On the other hand, it's also extremely impressive that he was able to actually pick up the victory here, and escape the pin after the piledriver. Once again, Saji's raw talent saves him in a situation where he made bad decisions. That's been a theme of this career, but perhaps it's disappointing that he had to win this way - on raw talent, resiliency, and spirit - rather than strategy. A little goosey told me that someone may be giving some advice to Saji soon along the lines of "work smarter, not harder." P.S. Did you turn 40 a few weeks ago too or just the narrator? 🎂 😄
