First big anime news I've heard since Blade Runner Black Lotus announced. Katsuhiro Otomo set to do a full AKIRA anime series adapting his Manga. Akira is one of my all time favorite movies although it truncated the story heavily to fit into one movie. With the upcoming series we will finally get the entire story adapted.

That's great! Akira was the third anime movie I ever saw (after Vampire Hunter D and Fist of the North Star). I liked it a lot and it blew my mind in a lot of ways. I also have very fond memories of seeing it for the first time. Butit did feel condensed to the point that a lot of it went over my head, especially the end. I'm definitely interested in seeing a full series adaptation of the manga. This is huge news! 😎

Almost the same order for starting anime as me. It was Akira, Fist of the North Star then Vampire Hunter D. I think those were the first anime movies Streamline Pictures brought over in the early 90's because a lot of people I talk to say those movies were their first along with the addition of The Professional Golgo 13 and Wicked City.
I remember the classic Streamline Pictures trailer at the first of every VHS tape and made it a point to track down as many of the anime in the trailers as I could find. In fact after a quick youtube search I found that Streamline Pictures classic teaser.
There is actually quite a bit more to the Akira story. A year or two ago the 35th Anniversary Boxset of Akira was released and I had that pre-ordered day one. It's six volumes and gives way more depth to the main characters, includes some story arcs not even mentioned in the movie and adds more information, especially on Akira himself. He is way more involved with the storyline, where in the movie he briefly appears for seconds and doesn't even speak.

The Akira series is very cool news! Funny thing, I just recently dug my copy of Akira out of the vault with the intention of watching it this weekend. I haven’t seen it in a very long time and wanted to go back to remind myself why so many people still hold it in such high regard. Cool news about the series, I will check that out for sure!
I LOVED Golgo 13, and could never figure out why nothing has been done with it for so long (well, outside of Japan anyway). I even tried using Duke Togo as a handle back in gamefaqs days (taken 😠), and used to imagine that agent 47 in hitman was Duke setting up his next hit! There was even a live action movie staring the MAN, Shinichi “Sonny” Chiba as Duke Togo, and he even had the Golgo 13 hair style! Man, haven’t thought about Golgo in a while, memberberries got me good this morning!

Man, haven’t thought about Golgo in a while, memberberries got me good this morning! I actually made the Golgo 13 / Agent 47 Association as well and even suggested a Golgo 13 inspired skin should be made available as a DLC for any of the Hitman games. I've actually still got my original VHS anime collection, although over the years I've got them on DVD and again on Blu Ray (at least the ones that have made it to blu ray). I know my VHS copy of Silent Mobius and Neo Tokyo may be worth quite a bit of money, at least based on what I've seen them selling for on Ebay. I also have an original run of the Project Ako series on DVD which must now be out of print because I've seen that selling for hundreds.
There was a second Golgo 13 anime movie called Queen Bee and a Golgo 13 anime TV series that I have on DVD and Blu Ray. It's pretty good and gives a lot more insight on the backstory of Golgo 13 including his paranoia about people standing behind him making him freak out and meeting an illegitimate son. I've never seen the Sonny Chiba movie, but I know it's called The Kowloon Assignment, or something like that. Surprisingly very little done in video game format for Golgo 13, although I do remember the NES game.
I have Akira on VHS, DVD and two different special editions of it on Blu Ray, including one that has both the current dub and the original Streamline Pictures dub most memorable for Jimmy Flinders aka Cam Clarke aka Liquid Snake as Kaneda. There is a new 4K edition blu ray coming out for the film as well, but since I don't have a 4K TV yet I may wait a while before picking that up.

You have quite the collection! I have a DVD copy of the Kowloon Assignment somewhere, it might be a part of a Sonny Chiba collection (one of those ten movies smashed onto one or two disk type affairs), complete with extra shitty dubbing. I was going to add that a Golgo skin for hitman was always a wish for the hitman games for me in my previous post! I remember trying that Golgo NES game, the sniping part was fun, but that game was busted. Nice collection, I’d love to see the series!

I think those were the first anime movies Streamline Pictures brought over in the early 90's because a lot of people I talk to say those movies were their first along with the addition of The Professional Golgo 13 and Wicked City. I remember finding them at my local Blockbuster in the mid 90's and FLIPPING OUT. My friend and I had briefly heard about "Japanimation/anime" and were itching to get a hold of one. Vampire Hunter D blew our minds, Fist of the North Star blew it even further (as Kenshiro literally broke heads), and then Akira just sent us into a spinning state of confusion and enjoyment!!! I can always remember those first three but I can't quite remember the order of the ones I saw afterward. I'm pretty sure we saw Ninja Scroll within a few years as well as Ranma 1/2. I remember the classic Streamline Pictures trailer at the first of every VHS tape and made it a point to track down as many of the anime in the trailers as I could find. In fact after a quick youtube search I found that Streamline Pictures classic teaser. Definitely remember that! Nostalgia city! There is actually quite a bit more to the Akira story. I can't remember exactly which one was the first one I actually saw, only that Saturday Japanime on Sci-Fi was probably my exposure to it. Unless Sailor Moon or Ronin Warriors came first. Hard to say at this point, the mid-90s are blurry.
I think the first one I ever read about was Ranma 1/2, in a magazine talking about the SNES game Street Combat and comparing it to its origin as a Ranma game.

YES!!! I'm really excited to see Masters of the Universe given another chance. I've read a bunch of articles about it coming back and really wish that more people (especially critics of the world) were knowledgeable of the extraordinary 2002 Toonami version of Masters of the Universe. "The Power of Grayskull" episode is especially great. I think its unlikely that series will be beaten in depth and quality of storytelling by the new one but I'm optimistic to see what Kevin Smith does with it. Apparently the new series will pick up where the 80's version left off and so I hope they are going to acknowledge the hinting of the Snake People (and King Hiss). At the very least, we know that series recognized Hordak so hopefully we'll see him return. As much as I love the classic He-Man vs. Skeletor dynamic, I think Skeletor is a much more interesting character when he's forced to consider his role after King Hiss and Hordak emerge as threats.

The 02 version is the one I know and I enjoyed it at the time. And if you haven't watched the He-Man and the Masters of the Universe episode of the Toys that Made Us on netflix, you(I mean everyone) should. It's a wild story with some stories that you will laugh at as they recall them.

I think tonight is a good night to do so 😁

Yeah, that is my favourite episode of the toys that made us with the Star Wars one in close second. I have a vivid imagination and kept seeing a bunch of guys sitting around chain smoking and drinking scotch just making shit up on the fly praying for a hit. They used old toy lines and repainted them (battle cat!), all kinds of shit like that! Very inventive group that flew by the seat of their pants, bullshited a lot, gambled (the part about how they got the animated series out was funny!), and just got really lucky. It would make a great movie, som real Don Draper Madmen type stuff. Great stuff and very recommended! The Star Wars one and the Barbie ones (those women were viscous and cut throat!) were great as well!

But yeah the whole series was basically some guys bullshitting there way into toy deals and then just turning whatever idea they had into a character (as you would imagine with a lot of those characters). I think I made a mistake watching it first. I watched the gi Joe one after and it on its own would have been a fine story but after the craziness of He-man it just didn't measure up. So I haven't watched any of the others wanted to watch the Lego one but didn't want to be bummed by it not having the fun goofiness of he-mans origins that I couldn't watch it.
