I feel like there's a decent enough number of fighting game players here to support a thread like this.
Myself, with relatively few exceptions for extremely entertaining or informative people, I've never really understood the phenomenon of watching other people play video games. I will watch stuff about video games all day, whether it be about art, development, music, or just the sagas of games gone wrong. But just watching other people play? Never really been much for me for the most part.
The one genre that is a huge exception to this rule is fighting games. I will watch and analyze other people play fighting games all damn day and enjoy the hell out of it. And I enjoy watching back my own matches. This gave me a thread idea.
So, welcome to the FITE LAB. Play a fighting game? Post some matches. Discuss some matches. Show off a fun match or a big win or a crazy combo. Post some famous or high-level matches for people to watch and discuss. Looking to improve your game? Post some videos here and we can talk about what you're doing well or what you could work on.
The essence of fighting games is competition and learning. Let's see if we can't help each other along the way, or at least have a good time along with each other (or at each other's expense!)

For myself, I've been playing Guilty Gear Strive pretty much non-stop lately, and I've been doing a (near) daily YouTube series showing some of what I feel are my most entertaining matches, entitled lol I'm bad at Strive. I felt like I was cluttering up the fighting games general thread with my videos, and this seemed like a fun thread idea, so I thought I'd break off and see how this goes.
My Strive journey so far:
lol I'm bad at Strive part 1:
lol I'm bad at Strive part 2: THE ORCA
lol I'm bad at Strive part 3: THE DOLPHINING
lol I'm bad at Strive part 4: May, Queen of the Grapplers
lol I'm bad at Strive part 5: See ya!
lol I'm bad at Strive part 6: MAY LARIATO
lol I'm bad at Strive part 7: RAEG against the Maychine
lol I'm bad at Strive part 8: the part where I rank up to floor 8
lol I'm bad at Strive part 9: Double Failure Double Feature
Thoughts, discussion, or criticisms of my play are more than welcome. I'll be the first to admit (as you can tell from the video titles) that I'm not very good at this game, and I'm capping more for matches I found funny or entertaining than ones where I played well, but I welcome any thoughtful criticism of my bad decisions or poor strategies.

Problems I know I have right now: I'm overly dependent on three moves as May: the jumping Heavy Slash, the sliding kick, and the spinning lariat. Also, while I'm somewhat decent at creating offensive opportunities for myself, I'm often really bad at maintaining offensive momentum, or I'll screw up my execution and do, for instance, a jumping Heavy Slash when I meant to do a vertical Mr. Dolphin or an air super. Additionally, I have a tendency to blow my Psyche Burst (the blue/gold explosion when getting hit for non-GG players) too early in the match, leaving it open season for my opponent to juggle me all over the place.
I've been steadily trying to work on my execution because Strive is a little more strict on inputs than, say, Street Fighter IV. Unfortunately, the three moves I mentioned paid so many dividends for me when I was playing against lower-tier players that, now that I'm getting up into the somewhat higher ranks, I'm having trouble dropping the habit of instinctively going for them.

First time poster, long time (....5 minutes) reader here. Great idea for a thread! 👊 I used to have SF4 and KOF 2002: UM videos up on mah youtubes but I took them down. So I haven't a fist'a'cuffs video to my name. But I'll certainly be following this thread 👍 Other than playing 2002 about once every two weeks, I've been taking a bit of a hiatus from the genre. But I'll probably get back into it with the next KOF. I also have never really been that into watching other people play games but fighting games are my exceptions. Actually...I've been known to take in a wrestling game video as well 😄 Saji: "So...we're just going to leave without commenting on the 'blow my Psyche Burst too early" thing?

I assumed wrestling games went without saying. I just uninstalled Ultra Street Fighter IV last week because I've been playing so much Guilty Gear and so little Street Fighter that it didn't make sense to have it sitting around taking up my limited drive space. Fun game, but it was long past the point where there was anybody left playing at my (low) skill level. Any time I went online to play I would just be destroyed by tournament-level players, or on the rare occasions it wasn't that, I was beating up on someone who very clearly had no idea what they were doing and that didn't feel any better. One of the things I really like about Strive is how good the ranking system's been at keeping me playing with people of a similar-ish skill level, so I rarely feel like I'm just bullying somebody who has no idea what's going on. Speaking of Strive, it's time for... lol I'm bad at Strive part 10: Blasting off AgainI watched a May combo video this evening, and learned how much damage I've been leaving on the table with my simple three-hit launch combos. Here, you can see me trying out a new combo, with better results. Also, apparently throwing I-No players off the stage is just something I do now.

I made it to floor 9 of the ranking tower today. On the way, I had two really good matches, and I decided to cap them both

Well, I got kicked back down from 9 to 8 again, but I had what I think is probably the dumbest, funniest match I've seen in this game so far

I am curious as to whether you use an arcade stick or a regular console controller? I’ve never owned an arcade stick, but I’ve been a fighting game fan for a very long time, so I’m wondering if arcade sticks are like a nice pair of expensive Jordan’s, if you make the steep investment, you’re instantly great at basketball? Arcade sticks must be the same, right? 🙂

I use an old Xbox 360 controller I've had since like '07. It's a broken down old piece of junk that barely works anymore but it's comfortable and I know it well. I've been thinking about getting an arcade stick but I kind of don't want to mess up my muscle memory. I think I'm the only person I know who plays fighting games with a thumbstick. Everyone else I talk to uses a dpad or an arcade stick. Most people I've talked to who use an arcade stick say they would never go back to using a pad, but I've also known a few staunch pad users. I think it's ultimately about what's most comfortable for you personally.
Also, I just woke up after leaving my latest video to upload while I slept, so it's time for...
lol I'm bad at Strive part 13: I'm rude now
I got kicked down to floor 7 of the ranking tower and was a bit spicy about it and kind of took it out on this dude. Match still turned out pretty good though.

lol I'm bad at Strive part 14: Lemme Hug YaI had a real good run of matches last night. Lots of fun fights, good mix of wins and losses, and I really went on a tear towards the end of my session. I was thinking that I might get back up to Floor 9 at the rate I was going but I wasn't prepared for what actually happened. Oh dear.

Arcade sticks must be the same, right? 🙂 I've used both over the years. Now I definitely prefer pads because my reaction time just isn't what it used to be. Pads help hide the difference since my fingers can travel faster than my wrists can. At my absolute best, I preferred joysticks for the Marvel vs. games (with the full 6-button layout making combos more fun) and also Capcom vs. SNK 2. I never liked sticks for SNK games, especially KOF. But I liked sticks for Capcom games. Now, it's pads for every game. I haven't owned a fighting stick for years. The one I bought in 2001 is broken but that one got me many glorious years and was sturdier than some cars 😁 I was happy when I saw pad users starting to win in tournaments and eventually split matches with stick users in Evo. There was one year a pad user with Zangief won and it blew people's minds 🤯 I agree with UIG in keeping with what works for him and not messing up muscle memory. I used an old Logitech PC pad for years for KOF and it worked for me. I "upgraded" to the 360 pad years later which is objectively better in many ways (including the fact it wasn't breaking down!) but I struggled to adapt. Oh, and I remember getting Reebok basketball pumps back in the day and dominating the NBA 😁

I was never able to adapt to the analog stick on a console controller for fighting games, d-pad all the way for me. Even Tekken I stick to the d-pad with, it just feels more natural. Kudos to you for using the 360 thumbstick! I tried for a while, even knocked the difficulty down while I got used to it, but I just couldn’t get the hang of it. The fact you’re honkey-tonkin’ fools online with that stick elevates you to deity status in my books! 🐬🙇♂️
Oh! That was YOU doing 360 no look tomahawks in those Reebok pumps back in the day OG! Now it all makes sense!

In all honesty I probably should get a new controller. The shoulder buttons on my 360 pad are getting flakey, the rumble motors don't work anymore ever since I opened the pad up to get the B button unstuck, and the left thumbstick is starting to feel really "loose." But as far as I know, they don't even make the official 360 pads anymore and like hell am I paying the premium for the more recent Xbox controllers.
lol I'm bad at Strive part 15: Tripping face-first down the Stairway to Heaven
I didn't last long on floor 10. Or floor 9. But the matches were pretty cool looking.

Okay, so I did say that part of the purpose of the thread was discussing match videos so let me set up some analysis here and explain what was going on in my head in that match: I posted on another forum asking for advice and the response I got back was that I jump waaay too much and it was opening me up to getting countered a lot. So in this video, you can see me consciously trying not to jump as much as possible. I only jump intentionally twice (once in round 2 and once in round 3) and I jump accidentally once in round 1 because I was being sloppy with my inputs and fucked up.
I'm not super familiar with the Millia matchup and you can definitely see that from watching this video with a critical eye: Not being familiar with her animations or gameplan, I let several opportunities to block or counter slip past me. I eat several sweeps I absolutely should've seen coming (notably one around 0:31), and I'm unsure what to block high or low so get tagged by overheads multiple times. That MAY LARIATO at around 1:37 is probably the worst idea I consciously had in the whole match. I got overconfident and tried to style on them and it backfired. At about 1:45 when Millia Psyche Bursts out of my combo you can see me start to panic. From there, watching the UI, every time you see the word "COUNTER" on the screen is me freaking out and mashing buttons. At that point, I could've easily hit Roman Cancel to force Millia back, or even used the orca super to push out of the corner (and probably won the match), but I was in pure panic mode and no longer playing rationally.
Overall, I actually play decently (though not great) here for most of the match, but I just completely fuck up the ending. There's no good reason I shouldn't have won this match except for a combination of hubris and panic when my plan falls apart. This is one of the reasons that I like being able to record and replay my matches: It keeps me honest and forces me to see what I'm doing wrong. The temptation when you lose a match like this is to blame the game, or your controller, or any number of other things, but when you watch back with a critical eye, you recognize those excuses for what they are and are forced to confront your actual deficiencies as a player.

Now it all makes sense! That was also me pumping up the sneakers so much that they spontaneously combusted 🔥 I have also never been able to use the little analog stick on controllers. I can do D-Pad and I can do regular size joystick. I just can't do those little sticks or nubs. I've tried and it just never goes well. I can do 90 degree motions but sometimes my finger slips off of it when trying 360's or half-circle motions. TL:DR - I have very strong feelings about video game controllers for fighting games 😜 The main reason I got the Xbox controller (and I don't even know if its 360 or XB1) is because of the compatibility for PC/Steam. Other console controllers are unreliable for connecting to PC to be used for Steam. And a lot of the third party PC controllers (like Logitech) have crummy D-Pads and also aren't 100% reliable for Steam usage. But I absolutely hate Xbox controllers, and have for years, because of their triggers. The Xbox was a console seemingly designed for shooters and the L2/R2 are triggers and not buttons. That always makes them unreliable for fighting games. I've never really liked their D-Pads either but I've gotten used to this one. I prefer the PSX pads and those are pretty horrible on their own as they are buttons rather than an actual D-Pad. It's just that because of the Microsoft connection, Xbox controllers work seamlessly on PC's. I'd prefer to rock a SNES controller than an Xbox or PSX one. And Nintendo's controllers since the N64 can only be for fighting games by Shuma Gorath-like creatures 🐙 One of the best pads I had were Capcom vs. SNK branded pads for Dreamcast but I doubt those would work without like 3 layers of adapters and an HVAC generator 😁
