148 people at work called in due to that storm a few days ago. Our plant was the only thing in the area that didn't close down for the storm. (Of course, safety first as always, cunts.) One guy I talked to said the only reason he didn't stay at home is because when he hit the highway it was not plowed and the snow was so deep it was actually coming over his windshield and blinding him and he didn't dare risk turning around by that point and risk ditching his truck. Only seven people in my shop actually made it in.
Enough people called in that the company was forced to issue attendance exemptions so no one will be getting punished for not showing up to work. When I showed up Tuesday some people thought I wouldn't bother to come in since I start my vacation today, but I knew I was going to lose out on pay for Monday and I didn't want to lose out pay for Tuesday as well. My wonderful attendance isn't out of loyalty to the company, it's because I get paid half decently and I have a new TV, PC and PS5 all on the menu for 2021 to pay for.

It is so cold outside that the county has closed my office for today. Yesterday's high temperature was -1. This time yesterday, it was -11 with wind chills hovering between -20 and -25 (and worse than -30 in outlying rural areas). Today's high is supposed to be 7 degrees but the local energy company has mentioned something about rolling blackouts to ease the stress on the energy grid (I think that's the case; also, that's probably more to do with my office's closure than the actual temperatures but the latter's a cause of the former so I'd say it's all related).
In my entire adulthood, I have never heard of that happening here and don't think it ever happened when I was a kid. Then again, I don't think I have ever seen such a prolonged stretch of minus and single digit temperatures here. Definitely going to suck for an hour if they hit where I live; my townhouse is all electric. This is pretty extreme for this part of the country. We're used to what's hitting Texas at the moment. Really feel for them. They're not used to dangerously low temperatures, like at all.

This weather is making me regret working in convenience. I've literally had two customers all night and I don't blame them. I don't want to be here either.

We've been bouncing all over the place between snow and ice storms over the last couple weeks to a +8 melt a few days ago. Did my first cigar walk in weeks that day. We have a storm warning for later in the week but it might miss us. At least there are no double digit minus temps forecast for now so I don't have to worry about my computer dying.

Finally coming out of the deep freeze here, high of -6 C (21 F), and 8 C (46 F) Sunday!
Stay warm and safe wherever you all are! Iโll try to send some warm weather down your way soon! ๐

I did not know if this belongs HERE, but I got to see this on the way to work this morning! The view at the 40ish second mark is only about three minutes ahead of where I was on the same road at the time I saw it. It was nuts, so BRIGHT! I thought there was lightning or something, then you realize the time of year... the streak across the sky actually lingered for a few seconds, never seen anything like it! ๐ (I donโt know whatโs up with the eerie music though...)

Wow, that's awesome!! ๐ฒ
I'd probably freak out if I was driving and saw that flash across the sky.
I'd also welcome our new meteor overlords ๐

It's extremely windy right now in Massachusetts. The kind where you can definitely hear it even when safely nestled indoors, and also you hear something falling outside every 15 minutes or so and just hope whatever fell, it wasn't too important.

Wow, that's awesome!! ๐ฒ I'd probably freak out if I was driving and saw that flash across the sky.ย ย I'd also welcome our new meteor overlords ๐ It was a bit of a trip when I grasped what it was I was seeing, I half expected to see a flash and a mushroom cloud to the north west. It was odd how the streak lingered for a few seconds before dissipating. I love stuff like this, and standing on the shore looking out over the ocean, or on the top of a mountain looking at the whole mountain range, it puts things into perspective. Reminds you how insignificant you really are and that your hang ups and issues are not even a speck in the grand picture of time. I felt like a caveman cringing at the flash in the dark sky, you know what it is, but the instinct is there. It was so quick, but a really cool life experience, I feel pretty lucky to have witnessed it! ๐ Also, hereโs an update regarding the composition of the HADOKEN that lit up our morning sky (seeing as cock knuckle had the YouTube video removed...) edmonton.citynews.ca/2021/02/25/fireball-in-the-sky-was-a-comet-burning-in-the-atmosphere/

We're getting that major wind now. -15 and with windchill -29. Wind is hard enough to creak the house and rattle the windows. It's windy enough that I'm preparing for a potential power outage. There will be no cigar walks today.

March is all gale force winds, wild Loki-style temperature swings, and snow storm false finishes before April. In some ways its worse than January cause you know January will suck but March gives you a hope spot of a week of 50 degree weather then avalanches you the next week worse than January even did! It was a bit of a trip when I grasped what it was I was seeing, I half expected to see a flash and a mushroom cloud to the north west. It was odd how the streak lingered for a few seconds before dissipating. I love stuff like this, and standing on the shore looking out over the ocean, or on the top of a mountain looking at the whole mountain range, it puts things into perspective. It was so quick, but a really cool life experience, I feel pretty lucky to have witnessed it! ๐ It's really awesome that you not only got to see it but had that great experience of reflection afterward. I can't readily think of any huge atmospheric/ space event I've ever seen. The closest thing was probably this. I was driving the day after a big hurricane. It was about an hour-long trip home. What was scary as shit though was that there were no drivers whatsoever in a usual high traffic area. And all of the traffic lights were out. It pretty much felt like the world had ended. I was contemplating pulling over to read a book only to have reading glasses break ๐ YES!! That is just shocking in the best way possible!

Wow, I canโt imagine the aftermath of a hurricane. People piss and moan about how cold it gets here and how long it stays dark at the peak of winter, but we DONโT have hurricanes or poisonous bugs or snakes (we do have western diamondbacks in the south part of the province though), closer to the Rockies you might feel tremors occasionally, but other than tornados that mostly tear through rural areas, we have pretty benign weather. Hurricanes look scary as shit, that must have been a trip. I guess for OGs sake, instead of hadoken to describe the meteor, I should have used haoh sho ko ken! ๐

That haoh sho ko ken looks like it gets swallowed up by a black hole or dark matter ๐
Once August approaches, it's hurricane season and you just don't know what's going to happen. That drive home was one of the eeriest occasions of my life. The winds were still blowing too so watching the dead traffic lights just swinging around with no one on the road really felt like I was in Mad Max or something.
This summer the entire east coast is supposed to get overrun by cicadas ๐

The wind really has the allergens going right now. My chest was so congested by the time I got to work that I thought it was going to turn into something larger like covid. I've never had allergies that brutal.

I think winter is officially over here. Last Wednesday, Thursday and Friday it was freezing with a snow storm on Friday, then temps went up to +14 Saturday and Sunday and the snow is almost all melted. Nothing in the immediate forecast but Sun and +16 temps for the next two weeks. When the last of this snow melts off winter will likely be done and over until the fall. I'll still wait until mid to late April before I change my winter tires just in case though. I'm always somewhat relieved to make it through winter, although the last couple years really haven't been that bad. Not as bad as it was 5 years ago when we had a blizzard every three days for all of February.
