To be the man, you have to apparently kill the man. Ric Flair just murdered Terry Funk in my copy of 2D Wrestling Revolution.

Since I just received an original guide for Super Fire Pro-Wrestling (1991) on the Super Famicom, I decided to go back and play the game for old time's sake.
WWF Superstars on SNES hardware one year before LJN released WWF Super Wrestlemania.
Fans of the Ultimate Warrior will appreciate one of the legend's first appearances in a Fire Pro game. Since Warrior was just WWF Heavyweight Champion at the time, his stats are noticeably very high in SFPW. I'd even go as far as saying the highest of any Fire Pro title, arguably. My go-to tag team: THE URBAN BLASTERS (Road Warriors)! While SFPW is far from the best 16-bit Wrestling game available, it was the first Fire Pro on the SNES/Super Famicom, setting the foundations for titles like Special and X Premium that would supersede it.
Personally, SFPW has always been a guilty pleasure of mine. It was the first title where I discovered the 'running attack' glitch against the COM, and the first old school Fire Pro where I was able to clear the second playthrough/Hard mode. Years later, I still remember feeling a major sense of accomplishment reaching the final boss Rikiozan (Rikidozan) in World Championship/Official League mode. All during a time where information on the older Fire Pro games was sparse across the web.
Even with it's flaws and lack of features found in later entries, there's a charm to SFPW. Maybe it's the simpler graphics, interesting roster. or just the catchy music that wins me over (some of which, would go on to become series staples after this title's release). Yet, SFPW title that I return to every blue moon.
Here's to you, Super Fire Pro-Wrestling.

I love the post match celebration pic! THIS is the kind of feeling that is missing from more modern wrestling games, maybe it’s just because the subject of the game was treated with more legitimacy and respect than it is now, and that filtered down into the game? A feeling of ACCOMPLISHMENT, beating the “boss”, a storied legend that pays homage to the history of the “sport”, a fight you have to work towards instead of adding DLC legends with no context for new players/fans, just to cash in on nostalgia for the people who remember what came before. This is really cool to see, I’d love to see a wrestling game like this again, and thankfully FPW is still partly there, but just like the source material, the games have lost the plot.

Currently playing Skyrim.
That's right, I bought (and 100%'d) the original release on PS3. Played a few hundred hours.
I bought (and 100%'d) the Special edition on PC so I could enjoy the modded Skyrim experience. Logged close to 1000 hours.
Recently got the jones to play a little Skyrim and couldn't be arsed to update all the drivers etc required to run mods on PC, so I looked online and the Anniversary edition was on sale for PS4, and this version included mod support.
Bought it, loving it. I've played a lot of Skyrim-like games in the last 12 years, but nothing quite hits like Skyrim does. I'll probably be playing it until Elder Scrolls 6 comes out in like 2034.

AEW, FFXVI and Aliens Dark Descent all arriving and now updating on my PS5 at the same time. Gonna be a while downloading all those day one patches. So I've been playing Valkyria Chronicles on the PS4 while I wait. About 3/4 through it. May try and finish it off since I've never beaten it, but I know I need to start learning the AEW grappling asap to see if I want to bother to invest in the season pass or just hold off and wait and see if 2K24 is going to get something worth buying this year.
Still need to pick up the FF Pixel Remaster collection but I am holding off because I *think* I may have made my last car payment a week ago and I am waiting to see if I get the congratulations letter before I turn into Rich Uncle Pennybags and start buying useless stuff I don't need again.

Aliens Dark Descent. Hard as hell but boy did they manage to capture the spirit of Aliens right down to the music and sound cues. In so many Aliens games we're used to seeing the Xenomorphs as cannon fodder and mowed down pretty easily, but even a group of three or four in this can make my marine squad think twice.
Once a Hive is alerted to the presence of intruders everything becomes a ticking time bomb. Xenos will come out and start patrolling for you and the longer you're present the more agitated the hive becomes until it eventually sends out a horde to find you. I've discovered regardless of your mission objectives when this happens, forget the mission, JUST GET OUT!!! Permadeath is very real in this game.
You can use your torches to weld yourself into a safe room allowing you to try and heal wounds, consolidate ammo, take some stress meds for any marines panicking. But even safe rooms can be breached if you become overly reliant on them as the Xenos will take to vents and I think bigger Xenos will eventually tear down secured doors if they're alerted to your presence in the location. I'm not positive about this but I know I had a welded door suddenly open up and Xenos start pouring in and I can only assume they eventually just tore it down unless they found another way in.
I haven't even had a squad of marines survive the first mission yet with the Xenos grabbing one of my guys who I was unable to retrieve. Another was wounded and unable to move so he had to be carried by another marine and the two of them made a fighting retreat to the ARC but never made it before being overwhelmed.
The USS Otago is caught up in an emergency protocol to contain what appears to be an intentional Xenomorph infestation and crash lands on the planet Lethe (Greek for Oblivion, I looked it up). The heavily damaged ship acts as your base of operations providing you a barracks with a roster of marines to recruit, customize and level up accordingly, all with their own good and bad personality traits. A Medbay to treat wounded marines that survive missions, a Lab and Workshop for weapon modifications and upgrades. You have the goal of trying to salvage materials to repair the Otago as well as deal with a growing Xenomorph infestation on the planet.
I actually bought it on PS5, but I like it so much I could see double dipping on the PC version when it goes on sale on Steam at some point. The text is so small I find it really hard to read on a TV screen.

Lately, I've been playing through Tenryu Genichiro no Pro Wrestling Revolution (known as Hammerlock Wrestling outside of Japan) for old time's sake. In the past, my go-to was always Hogan clone Sam Warhammer. The guy had great reach, submission holds, and the dreaded Ax Bomber. Though, I've been playing as resident Abdullah The Butcher knockoff Abdull Killer (Sid Bieniek in Hammerlock). While Killer's reach is shorter, his diving Elbow Drop can be landed on opponents TWICE. Knock opponent down Go for a diving elbow Opponent rises to feet and remains temporarily stunned in a groggy state. Knock opponent down with a shoulder block. Then go for another diving elbow to add insult to injury. Out of the two versions, I love Tenryu Genichiro more. Not just because it's the officially-licensed version featuring Tenryu, but because Tenryu's version contains background BGM, which definitely adds to the experience. From Rival Turfs to Tuff Enuff, I've always enjoyed Jaleco's games. Hammerlock Wrestling/Tenryu Genichiro is a 2D Wrassler that fell by
the wayside, but it certainly has a charm to it. The music is great, the comic-style match cutscenes look excellent, and the roster of
Wrestler lookalikes is quite interesting.
Hulk Hogan Great Muta Keiji Mutoh Abdullah The Butcher Genichiro Tenryu Jumbo Tsuruta Stan Hansen Road Warrior Hawk/Vader Lex Luger Shinya Hashimoto Mitsuharu Misawa and Yokozuna!

Picked up Evil West and Wanted: Dead on discount. Have plowed through most of Evil West already. I would describe it as Nightmare Creatures meets God of War in terms of game play. Pretty flimsy story and linear game play of explore area, come to arena section, fight several waves of enemies, continue on, repeat. That said, combat is satisfying as you're able to mix up your play style with numerous weapons and abilities and of course on the PS5 it's as smooth as silk and beautiful to look at. Hope to have it knocked out soon and get into Wanted and then maybe Gungrave if I get through it fast enough. Trying to knock off some of the backlog to make room on the PS5 because the hype surrounding Baldur's Gate 3 has me interested enough to pick it up when it releases in a week or so and it's got a pretty hefty install of 98gigs. I haven't done anything Dungeons and Dragons related in decades so it will be interesting to dive back in. The last Dungeons and Dragons game I played was that awful NES game which was so hilariously broken it was more fun to rent and watch my brothers play and become enraged by it. Spoony does a funny review of it www.youtube.com/watch?v=oTfCi59KCx8Also the new Samurai Shodown rollback netcode is supposed to come out this month so I may be getting back into that.
EDIT: It took all night and thirty or so tries on a couple bosses, but Evil West is finally beaten.

Wanted: Dead now beaten. Have Gungrave installed, patched and ready to go. Trying to break my bad habit of buying games at full retail and then only playing halfway through them. So I’m knocking out many of the short games off my backlog before I start buying new ones. So Baldurs Gate 3 is going to have to wait a few months I think.

Completed the Heavyweight Championship in 6 Man Scramble's Victory Road Mode. Now playing through the 6 Man Tag Tournament. Five of the teams so far have their own custom dialogue. The first being Sting, Hogan and Macho Man. Hogan's design is even lifted from his recent appearance in Fire Pro-Wrestling Iron Slam '96! The second team is the WAR faction Fuyuki-Gun (Gedo, Jado and Fuyuki). Team three happens to be NWO Japan while the fourth team features members of the UWFI invasion. After going up against The Hellraisers, I fought Rikidozan, Inoki and Baba to win the 6 Man Championship...a grand total of 24 consecutive matches! Still got some hidden characters to unlock but loving the Championship mode so far. Are there any other illustrations like these in the game? Or is it just these five?

I've been addicted to Shardpunk the last two weeks. It's a short game, I haven't beaten it yet but have been to the last level. Still, they nailed the gameplay and even the cheap retro style graphics look great. Every character plays differently and the battles are pretty intense and fun. I also just picked up Battlebits Remastered which is the massive multiplayer shooter developed by 3 guys that is currently taking over the Steam FPS market at the moment with 254 player battles. Low on the graphics but high on the gampelay. It's kinda like if you combined MAG with Battlefield.

This week, I was happily surprised to discover that the fan-made title Double Dragon Reloaded had come out of retirement with five new playable characters: The new characters are: Hacksaw Jim Duggan Ted Dibiase Marion Kunio-Kun and Honky Tonk Man, bringing the roster up to 20 selectable combatants. Reloaded is a title that I've been playing regularly for about 4 years now. Just having updates four years into development from a fan-made Openbor game clearly shows what a labour of love Reloaded has been to the developer. I have thought about helping with sprite development to assist in adding enemies like Chin, Burnov and Abore to the game as well.

75% through They Are Billions on PC. This is probably the hardest RTS game I've ever played as it's beyond unforgiving. One tiny little mistake can snowball quickly and an hour of play gets flushed down the toilet. I was stuck at 33% for a couple months and was almost convinced I would have to restart the campaign, but a new strategy pushed me through. Although at 75% I am starting to grind against a wall again.
On the PS5 I've started up Aliens Dark Descent again now that it has undergone several big patch updates. Another brutally hard game that has that sinister addictive gameplay loop. Plus, like in any game where I can create and customize rosters I like putting people I know in. The only thing I am changing on my next playthrough is the ability to have multiple save files instead of the harder difficulty two saves that overwrite each other. I had a game event glitch and it basically left me stuck with no earlier save to fall back on and there goes another hour of game I have to completely start over.
On Christmas break my brothers and a few of our friends are all going to play through Mario RPG Remaster on the Switch at the same time. We all played and beat the original on the SNES back when it came out, but none of us remember much about it, so we're going to kind've race each other.

I have played about 30+ hours of Warhammer 40k Darktide over the break so far. I've owned it for a while but knew my old PC wouldn't be able to run it decently. So over the break pretty much at random I started it up and became completely addicted. My brothers and friends had all been playing off and on over the last year and all have level 30 characters. I've almost caught up at level 27 so far playing the Veteran class. I'm actually hoping with the exclusivity rights for PC/Xbox ending in 2024 we are going to see a PS5 port of it. Didn't even bust out Mario RPG because my brother ended up having to leave after only a day so that might be something I get into when I go on vacation for the month in February.
EDIT: Also finally splurged on an SSD expansion for the PS5. 2024 looks like it's going to be pretty intensive with gaming content so I finally ordered a 2T SSD so I won't spend all year having to juggle game installations on the console.
