Was just browsing the PS store and see a Technos collection of NES games has been released. The NES versions of Double Dragon, Double Dragon II, Double Dragon III, Renegade, Super Dodge Ball, Crash and the Boys and River City Ransom are all now up on the store. Well I have all these on emulator, but I couldn't resist having some of these classics playable on a PS4 so I picked up all the Double Dragon games and River City Ransom from the collection.
You can also buy it as a bundle. I see all the Japanese Kunio Kun games come with the bundle as well.
Yeah it really cool the bundle has kunio him sports games that never released over here which is why I can't to pick this up at some point.

Newly translated too. I've had fan translated versions since the late 90s but I'd be interested to see how an official translation looks.
They even did a translation for the Japanese version of River City Ransom, as I recall. That's one I'd really like to see.

I don’t know why no one will touch super dodge ball for a remake. I know there are lots of shitty takes on it available, but I mean a proper, NES or arcade version. You’d think that game would lend itself perfectly to online competitive play, make it look good, a little faster, some new effects, I think it could be a banger!

YES!! Will definitely be buying the entire bundle. River City Ransom and Super Dodge Ball are among my top 5 NES games and it will be great having easy to access versions. And I may be even more excited to finally get to play the Japanese Kunio games I never got to try like Crash and the Boys! I don’t know why no one will touch super dodge ball for a remake. I'd love a Super Dodge Ball remake with updated mechanics, HD Kunio sprites, customized characters, and a story mode (tongue in cheek super dramatic style, of course) could be incredible. There was a GBA or DS game that had a character creator and that was pretty fun.

I picked up a GBA specifically for FPA and the super dodge ball game you mentioned. It was fun but FPA kind of distracted me from everything else. I didn’t care for the “kiddieness” of the gba super dodge ball, I thought they could have made it edgier or given it a bit of dark humour. The gameplay was fun though, definitely super dodge ball!

I loved gba super dodgeball I put a ton of hours into it. I was so excited to get the DS version but it I didn't like it. There weapons took away from the game and the buttons on the DS just didn't feel as good as the gba so I struggled with the DS version too.

Yeah, why mess with a good formula, didn’t like the weapons either. I was excited for it, but the DS one was a hot mess.
The gba one was fun, but the schoolyard presentation of it kept it from being a classic for me. I liked the absurdity the idea of a pro dodgeball league as it was presented in the old arcade game (you can find it on the PS4), so the school kids were off putting for me, but the gameplay was rock solid!

There was a GBA one and a DS one? Now I can't remember which one I got, especially since I may have played the GBA one on the DS for the clearer graphics and better colors.
(Plus I liked saving the GBA battery for pre-sleep FPA sims, LOL 😁 )
I just remember creating Orochi Army as a dodgeball team, and then creating them again in another Kunio game where you competed in mini games like a race and a gauntlet style brawl.

The DS one let you actually create characters while the GBA one only had a rename option.

WCW Backstage Assault is amusingly bad in many ways but damn did I forget how frustrating it could be at the higher difficulties. I don't know how I had the patience to unlock everything the last time I had it.
Highlight from the commentary, roughly paraphrased: "That's what makes WCW so great and also so dangerous. At any moment, anything can go wrong."
Note also that this game was released three months before the company's demise.

Say what you will about Backstage Assault - and I have - but I just set my opponent on fire, put him in a submission hold, and made him tap out while he was still on fire. The ECW games wish they were that hardcore. WCW Backstage Assault is amusingly bad in many ways but damn did I forget how frustrating it could be at the higher difficulties. I'd forgotten that.

Two of my oldest friends have gotten into the Legend of Heroes series over the past several months and after going through a couple of other games, I made a point to try out LoH: Trails of Cold Steel.
It's sufficiently hooked me. The prologue did a pretty good job of introducing the main character and his classmates while leaving enough "hints" about deeper stories and conflicts to come. The 1st chapter builds on this and places emphasis on the game's core gameplay mechanic "combat links" which enable party members to follow up their partner's attack under certain conditions. The 2nd chapter is devoted to moving along some of the aforementioned conflicts while adding a LOT of depth to the characters involved. I think there are something like 6 or 7 chapters and I'm already hooked in chapter 2.
I can't wait to see where the story goes.

I have a real love hate relationship with the series. Turn based JRPGs are my jam so I love that aspect but my god are they a slog to get thru. I’ve beaten the first two and am 30 hours into the third but all of them take a lot of effort to play them. By the end I’m always into it but those early chapters eat my soul.
