From an entertainment standpoint, I think this Mania largely delivered. They actually managed to take advantage of the empty arena and more often than not made the action and storytelling the focus (Day 2 being a better example than Day 1 imo). The episodes featuring the Undertaker and Bray are definitely not for everybody but I thought that both were fairly entertaining, even with the over-the-top absurdity of the latter's. They dared to try something radically different and I enjoyed it. Of course there were a couple of stinkers and the Night 2 finale left something to be desired but overall, it was a fun show.

I haven't seen Wrestlemania. I gave up my WWE account at some point last year and I don't have any plans to get it any time soon. But I'm intrigued as to what they did here. I'm glad to hear that they are trying new things right now. One of the biggest criticisms of the modern WWE is how formulaic they are in so many ways: booking style, match structure, camera presentation, promos, etc. I consider that to be a legitimate criticism. So for them to actually bust out something entirely unique is amazing. I realize it took a fundamental change for them to do this but it's encouraging they are taking advantage of it to try to find new methods of storytelling. Whether people liked it or not, I think WWE deserves to be applauded for trying something new and on their biggest show. Given the rumors of Vince's seemingly chilly reception to Matt Hardy's ideas over the past year, it's interesting that they tried something so creatively different with the Funhouse match.

I understood the Firefly Funhouse Match pretty easily.
Why people are making it out to be some kind of wicked confusing thing is beyond me.

For me it was not confusing... I was more in awe at what I´m watching.

Boneyard match was simultaneously the goofiest thing and greatest thing ever. Fiend's Funhouse or whatever it was called was probably the smartest bit of storytelling WWE has done in years, a total metaphysical deconstruction of John Cena's character. but for what it's worth, my award for best match at WM36 goes to Rhea/Charlotte. Those ladies worked their asses off and delivered a fantastic, emotional roller coaster of a match, even if I hated the result.
EDIT: KO vs Seth was a close second, both guys were really good at using the silence of the arena to their advantage, jawjacking constantly and making the fight seem very personal, and Owen's WM sign dive was a thing of beauty

Yeah, this was incredibly genius on WWE's part for sure and all the little nuances and references were so well placed.
If this is the end of Cena as we know him, it's an amazing way to do it.
So why do I feel they are going to mess this up?

I need to see the boneyard and firefly segments. I’ve been trying to make sense of them, and all of you seem entertained, if not at least in a train wreck fashion, by what was presented. My question is, after reading feedback (only here mind you), could these segments be called matches, or are they just movie shorts? I’m not trying to be a prick, I’m just trying to make sense of all of this. I’ve already, in my mind, likened today’s wrestling to A Weekend at Bernie’s, you can hang out with Bernie, he still looks like Bernie, you can go for a ride with Bernie, but he’s dead. His image is here, he can sit in your front seat or in your hot tub, but Bernie’s soul is long gone, so I’ve given up on trying to convince myself to like what is presented today. As a lifelong fan, I’d still like to try to understand it, maybe in my case, from a postmortem perspective.
My question for fans and those that saw these segments is would you want more of this? Would it be better for WWE to move away from a ring, titles, three counts, babies and heels, and just start making schlock B-horror movie or action flick skits for PPVs? Like I said, I’m an observer from the outside trying to understand what just happened to wrestlemania.
Side note: I got to watch parts of the last few wrestlemanias on TV, they were incredibly LONG, I had no idea who 80 % of the performers were, so edited, pretaped skits probably would have been a relief!

This just sounds like you are trying to shit on people who enjoyed anything out of WWE despite saying your just trying to be an observer. Which I'm not here to defend WWE, I stopped watching anything years ago and will just read recaps and watch some clips of anything that sounds interesting which is rare. I get that wrestling has changed and it's not what you used to like but things evolve. Yeah the stuff outside the ring weren't really matches but that was what was nice because they were different. The boneyard match was basically a B tv horror show fight scene but that made it fun and also is a way to still use the undertaker who can't really go in a ring anymore. The funhouse match was a neat kind of commentary on the wrestling career of one of the biggest names in wrestling. And yeah you aren't going to know 80% of wrestlers if you don't watch anymore. New wrestlers come in and WWE won't make a name bigger than their brand anymore because they don't want them to go on and be successful outside of the company. The answer is no I still want 99% of matches to still be in a ring but a novelty pretapped match that goes outside of the ring done well and would be fun thing to keep things fresh and also to give older wrestlers a chance to keep working and it not be sad. The boneyard match gave hope for an undertaker Sting match to happen that wouldn't just be visualization of the sad passing of time and aging of wrestlers.

Effective today, Friday April 10, 2020, WWE and The Revival have agreed on their immediate release from WWE. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors. WWE SourceFinally! It was about time. FTR - Forever The Revival. So... Highly likely they will go to AEW. It's the next step in the rivalry with “The Bucks of Youth”. The Young Bucks reacted to The Revival's release

Thanks for your reply faulknasty, you’re entitled to interpret my question anyway you’d like, and I’d never shit on anyone for enjoying something (not my job), I’m just glad to hear that someone who did enjoy the skits would prefer to see matches. I’m not trolling, just trying to wrap my head around the choice to present edited shorts during their biggest show. I’m all for experimentation and trying new stuff, And I’m indifferent to their interpretation of / distancing from pro wrestling, i just wondered if WWE fans would rather see the company transition to a movie/TV edited serialized thing that is out of he ring entirely, or if this kind of thing would be well received again in the future alongside traditional in ring matches. They’re obviously good at this stuff, I just sometimes wonder if this isn’t a sign of things to come and if there’s more demand for that product than the old style Rock vs Austin, Flair vs Steamboat, Michaels vs Hart type stuff that you’d traditionally see in Wrestlemanias?

Those "skits" are a way of variety and relatively new (Matt Hardy did those in TNA, Lucha Underground has done it too), but they will never replace normal matches. IMO the Firefly Funhouse segment at WrestleMania was great.

Wait, Bernie Lomax is dead? But I just partied with him last weekend!! 😲 No wonder he looked so chill after that water skiing wipeout! Luckily I know a good voodoo practitioner...
