I've never seen Demon Slayer, all I know is that it's getting insane critical praise. At first glance it didn't seem like something I would be into, but I said the same thing about Hunter X Hunter and that turned into one of my all time favorite series when I finally sat down and watched it. So I recently got a decent cash back refund from Amazon for pre-ordering something and getting rebated the original pre-order price and went ahead and ordered the blu ray set of the series.

I happened to catch Demon Slayer when it first aired on Adult Swim at some point last year. I liked the first few episodes but I didn't end up recording it and then lost the chance to catch up. I thought it had a good premise and some great fighting. I liked the mix of supernatural and martial arts as well. I've read a bunch of "Best of 2020" and "Best of 2010's" anime lists over the past few months and it's consistently in the top 10.

If anyone is interested in Berserk, Amazon.ca has been discounting the pricey Deluxe Edition volumes 1-9 at half price and Amazon.com at slightly less than half. So Far only volumes 1-7 are released but you can still pre-order 8 and 9 at the discounted price. I imagine with the recent death of Kentaro Miura they're going to be selling out fast and then the reprints will get majorly jacked up in price.
Also in other news, Sin City is now getting the Hardback Deluxe Edition re-release with The Hard Goodbye set to release in October.
My Invincible Compendiums finally arrived and I am looking forward to starting that. On a complete fluke I also discovered there was a 28 Days omnibus that tells the story between the events of 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later which I had to have, so I ordered that.

My random anime purchase of the week is season one of No Guns Life. Never heard of it, know nothing about it aside from the fact it has cyborgs and is cyberpunky; and that pretty much will sell me on anything.

I’ve never watched Gundam, but have been aware of its influence and popularity amongst fans and anime in general. I noticed the OG Mobile Suit Gundam movies are available to watch on Netflix, so I gave the first one a go. I’m really enjoying this old, 1981 treasure, but I realized something. Even as far back as 1981, anime had its archetypes established! Moody teen prodigy? Check. Mysterious and ludicrously adorned established bad ass protagonist? Check (this one seems to have spilled over to the fire emblem series as well as other JRPG games). Grizzled vet who sees the potential in the moody teen prodigy? Check. Overly cheerful girl in love with moody teen prodigy who wants nothing to do with her? Check.
Somehow I thought old anime didn’t have any of the modern tropes in it, but I guess it did! Too much fist of the Northstar and Golgo 13 for this guy I guess. There was lady slapping and cigarette smoking in this one, so I guess that old stuff met the new incoming stuff in this film. I wonder what the budget was for this one, lots of TV anime animation stuff I noticed in here (moving cells over painted backgrounds, etc). Great stuff, check it out!

Just finished season one of Dorohedoro. It's like something right out of a psychotic fever dream with its unexplained insanity. That said I am glad to hear season 2 is on production now.

On the manga front:
If anyone else is collecting the Berserk Deluxe editions, volume 10 just released this week. Still volumes 11 and 12 to go. Blade of the Immortal Deluxe volume 5 shipping March 15th and 6 and 7 up for pre-order. Fist of the North Star volume 4 shipping March 15th and volume 5 and 6 now up for pre-order on Amazon. I'm seriously almost due to order another book case because I am running out of room on the three I have now.

This actually isn't the Vampire Hunter D manga. I actually have omnibus one and omnibus 2 and 3 preordered. They collect the original Vampire Hunter D novels translated into english. There are a few illustrations scattered throughout, but I believe the manga was adapted from the original novel series. I've also been on the lookout for collected works of the Vampire Hunter D manga, hoping it will get a bundle format at some point like Berserk, Hellsing, Fist of the North Star and Blade of the Immortal because the manga is still running with Volume 30 currently with a release date of December 26th, 2023 which I am guessing is a placeholder date, but I don't want to track down 30 individual volumes as the earlier out of print volumes are a lot harder to find than the current releases. So I'm just holding my breath someone like Dark Horse will pick up the distribution rights and start pumping out collected works.

Oh, I see. Thanks for the clarification! 💡
That also explains why Amano only did the cover and not like every illustration in the book. It's more novel than manga. Still sounds really interesting though. I didn't realize there was a novel and a manga.

Anyone here check out Thermae Romae Novae on Netflix yet? I really had fun watching this one, lots of very funny writing and ridiculous moments, if you’re looking for something quick that will make you laugh, Thermae Romae Novae is a very good option! The formula gets a bit repetitive from episode to episode, but the humour of it keeps it fun!
Once you finish watching the story of Lucious the thermae architect unfold, there are really great, brief documentary style pieces at the end of each episode about Japanese hot spring culture that feature multiple hot springs (onsens) around the country, hosted by the manga series author, Mari Yamazaki. These are only a few minutes long, but they’re beautifully shot and feature a glimpse of some amazing onsen, most of which have been in operation for at least one hundred years! Great stuff!
