Watched Insidious: The Red Door the other night. Being a major fan of the films, I was expecting a whole lot more from the alleged final chapter in the Insidious franchise. That isn't to say Red Door wasn't a decent horror flick by any means. The film still packed a considerable punch, with an array of tense scenes, jump scares, and overall creepiness, in which the series has always been renown for. Personally, I just felt that the story behind Red Door felt far too light. In comparison to past instalments from the Insidious canon, many of the loose ends that tied up Red Door's plot seemed cobbled together at the last minute, making the grand finale between the Lipstick Face Demon and the Lambert family almost anti-climatic.
Perhaps the Nun 2 will bode better.

I actually watched a few films recently (gasp!), here’s a quick rundown.
The Outlaws (2017): the first time I saw Ma Dong-seok (aka Don Lee) in Train to Busan, I thought I need to see more of this brute! The Outlaws features Ma as a detective in charge of taming gang violence in the Chinatown area of his city. Three debt collectors from China enter the scene and disrupt the loose peace that has been brokered by Ma’s character by perpetrating acts of horrific violence on delinquent debtors., turning the gangs on one another as the collectors insert themselves into the existing gangs spots. This is a great action movie with some great fight scenes, Ma has a very natural comedic ability coupled with a hulk-like physical presence that makes for some really funny scenes, so it’s a bit odd when it’s coupled with stark and shocking scenes of violence delivered by The Raid calibur sociopath bad guys. It all works, and makes for a really memorable, very Korean movie (meant in the most flattering way, I find there’s so much stuff coming from Korea that has its own way, it’s unfettered by Hollywood conventions, they tell great stories in unique and mature ways that respect their audiences intelligence!), I’d highly recommend this one (first in a trilogy!).
Spider-Man: into the spiderverse: the first one, I’m late to the game! I loved this, and I can’t stand the lazy “multiverse “ nonsense MCU has been leaning on, this film makes it work, and makes me care about Miles. I loved this, don’t sleep on it!
Barbie: I saw this, I can’t believe it. I enjoyed it more than i thought. Margo Robbie is scotch bonnet hot, but is also a great actor, she did shit with Barbie I didn’t think could be done. Great writing here! Ryan Goslings Ken is hilarious, Simu’s ken just as good, and America Ferera is great, especially her rant about being a woman! That should be shown to kids in school and everyone in general. Really fun and cool film, check it out!

Laputa/Castle in the Sky:
This is not the first time I’ve seen Laputa, but it has been a very long time. I can’t believe how well this classic holds up, the action, the art style, the completely hand drawn animation (and the small nuances therein, small character movements and motions that make everything so much more authentic, little details that likely added many hours to the process!), the MUSIC and sound, it’s all such a treat. Laputa has always been a favourite of mine amongst the Miyazaki films, so it was a real treat to go back to it, I can’t wait to dive into the rest!
If you somehow haven’t seen Laputa, please give it a try! 😁

Laputa is easily one of my favorite Ghibli movies and it's so underrated!!
Every time I watch it I find something new and get more appreciation for it.
The story reminds me a little of Vision of Escaflowne which is one of my favorite anime ever 🐉

I chocked up a few more films over the past few weeks, maybe one or two will speak to someone here.
Lost Bullet/Lost Bullet 2: French films done on a shoestring budget (especially the first) about a troubled guy named Lino who who is a bit of an automotive mechanical genius with a penchant for crime. He gets busted, and the officer in charge of a high speed pursuit division recruits Lino to modify vehicles and get ahead of the other criminals using modified vehicles. A bond forms between the two, but a crooked cop on the pursuit team taking money from the bad guys gets in the way. This film is full of really fun fight scenes, great chase scenes with amazing practical effects (especially considering the budget for this film), and just a good little revenge story. I liked the first better than the sequel, but part 2 was really good as well. Give this one a try if you like action and Renault cars!
The Debt Ccollector: Another low budget film, this time in the US. Scott Adkins (French) plays a martial arts instructor experiencing hard times, and gets hooked up with a shady job as a debt collector by one of his training brothers. French is a nice guy in a world of scumbags, and is taught the topes by a grizzled veteran collector named Sue. Saying any more will blow the story, but I really liked this short film. Scott Adkins has been in a pile of low budget, B action movies, I really like him, and I’ll try to watch more of his stuff (he’s Boyka in that series of movies). Give this one a shot, I found it for free on Tubi.

The wife and myself saw Ghostbusters: Afterlife on Prime Video, enjoyed it. We are planning on seeing Frozen Empire on Spring Break (we are both teachers)
We also saw Dune 2 this past weekend. I don't know how Denis will be able to make the rest of he book series into movies. I am thinking this is the last one.

I was reading that Sammo Hung is doing some presentations at the Singapore Chinese film festival this year, and I started thinking about his amazing catalog of films. Magnificent Butcher is one of my faves of his, and I love this scene with a true legend and master, Kwan Tak-Hing (only 74 here…). 😁 ❤️

Magnificent Butcher is 100% Sammo's masterpiece, but yeah he's been in a ton of classics....
The Odd Couple, Knockabouts, Warriors Two, Project A, The Prodigal Son, Eastern Condors, Kill Zone, The Victim...I could go on. Love me some Sammo.

It's so rare for me to watch recent movies now but I recently watched Late Night with the Devil. A 'found footage' movie documenting a Late Night talk show called Night Owls that aired on Halloween night in 1977 and whose guests involved bringing on a psychic, a paranormal debunker (obviously based on James Randi) and a girl claiming to be a conduit to communicate with demons. Really good movie.

After recommendations from several friends, I finally watched the recent horror movie Talk To Me.
Unique spin on the ouija/seance/possession-type flicks, with a rarely-seen look from the spirit's perspective (think a watered-down depiction of 'The Further' from the Insidious franchise).
Dealing with a cast of teens, peer-pressure, and everyone wanting to try getting possessed as a cheap thrill, I couldn't help but feel Talk To Me was secretly a cautionary tale, dare I say - allegory for the dangers of drug usage among impressionable youths.

Caught Peninsula, the sequel to the Korean zombie hit Train to Busan. It sucked. Very disappointing considering how great the original was. It was more like a lame Korean version of Zack Snyder's Army of the Dead which was also really lame.

I stumbled onto this on Prime Video, and if there are any Donnie Yen fans out there that have missed this, or if you’re a fan of crazy action movies, you owe it to yourself to check out Raging Fire. This felt like a throw back to old Hong Kong action films like Police Story and The Killer/Hardboiled, so if you like action movies, do yourself a favour and watch this one!

Hello there Today I watched The Man from the U.N.C.L.E. movie. It is a stylish action comedy. Their goal is to prevent a mysterious criminal organization from obtaining nuclear weapons and threatening global peace. The film stands out for its sleek 1960s aesthetic; sharp dialogue; and witty humor; blending espionage; action; and lighthearted moments with a retro feel.
