Cry for Me, Billy - A weary young gunslinger falls for an Indian squaw in an area where the natives are being hunted down by the military. This western feels like something made for TV, with a short run time, goofy music and barely passable acting. In contrast, it's also got tons of nudity, bloody violence and a bleak as fuck final third. For some reason Harry Dean Stanton (by far the most recognizable name in this) has a tiny bit part with a couple of small scenes at the start and one at the very end. Weird. 7/10
Bakuretsu toshi (aka Burst City) - A couple of rival punk bands, a group of cyborg bikers, a yakuza clan and an army of cops wage war on each other in a futuristic city. The influence on Tsukamoto and especially Miike is obvious, a nonstop cavalcade of frantic punk music and nihilistic hyperviolence. Lacking any real narrative, it's a continuous series of battles with Japanese dudes shouting at each other and brawling all over the place. It's a daring piece of filmmaking, but not one I'm sure I'll be revisiting any time soon. 6/10
The Great Battle - Epic war film about the defense of a besieged fortress in 7th century Goguryeo (proto-Korea) against an overwhelming force of Tang invaders from China. The cast is uniformly excellent, the writing is good and the scenes of battle carnage are plentiful and visceral. The only thing holding this back from true greatness is the typical South Korean over-reliance on massive doses of melodrama to sell the emotional impact. Spare me all the crying and music swells, and show me more severed limbs. 8/10
The Bare-Footed Kid - A country bumpkin with crazy martial arts skills comes to a big city to work in a dye factory, and gets involved when a rival dye maker tries to steal the secrets of the owner. A solid early 90's wire fu extravaganza from Shaw Brothers featuring Ti Lung, Aaron Kwok as the titular Kid and Maggie Cheung at peak hotness. For a movie that sets up fairly innocently and relies on a lot of comedy to carry the run time, it ends up in a bloody apocalypse of mass murder. Not too shabby. 7/10

The Darkest Minds (2018)
One of the worst movies I've ever watched. It's a take on the commonly used science fiction story of 'superpowers are mysteriously obtained by a select few, everyone else is scared of them'. Whatever caused it just mysteriously surfaced one day (and other than that, there literally is no explanation of the powers's origins, by the way) and it only affects children. All the children are immediately sent to "camps" in order for their powers to be controlled. Unless they have the 2 certain types of powers that are deemed the most powerful. Those children are immediately killed. It's basically all the worst components of X-Men, District 9 & The Hunger Games combined. Not only that, the actual movie fails in the fact that, what was supposedly an action sci-fi thriller really isn't any of those things, and way more of a melodramatic teenage love story between two of the power kids, Ruby and Liam. So not very action-y or sci-fi-y either. This whole movie was total garbage, not one good thing about it at all. For the record, I only rented it because Mandy Moore is in it. It is the #1 worst movie I've ever seen with her in. Worse than Southland Tales, which is something I thought I'd never say about any other film.

Just checked out Baby Driver, directed by Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, The Worlds End, Scott Pilgrim, etc), and I think this is the BEST film I’ve seen in the past couple of years. Crazy driving stunts, I will have to look up who did the driving in this movie because nothing touches what was in this one (the WRX at the start, wow.), great cast, John Hamm and Jamie Foxx were great (big redemption for him in my eyes, I loved him back in the In Living Colour days, then he was ubiquitous in an annoying, Tom Cruise/Tom Hanks/Will Smith kind of way, always playing the same person, himself. This role was intense and friggin scary!). Hamm does a great job with his role, I’d really like to see him in more action stuff. Baby Driver, Ansel Elgort and his girl Lily James have great chemistry as well, cool to see new actors keep up with some of the big, established heavyweights. The music, typical Brit music selection, awesome, very eclectic and appropriately funky, energetic, slow as fit the on screen proceedings. Kevin Spacey being involved likely hurt the film’s exposure, which is a shame because it’s really good and deserves more attention. I’m ready to watch it all over again right now! Check it out!

Checked out Aquaman on the weekend, I really didn’t think ANYTHING could make Aquaman cool or interesting, but these guys nailed it. It’s a really fun, bright, funny film, don’t come for a deep story, it’s pretty corny, but in a fun, superhero movie way. Couldn’t help but compare it to Thor: Ragnarok, especially with how colourful and witty it is, and there’s even a good dose of Tron feel in there as well with the glowing, fluorescent light look and heavy synth music. I was happy to see Momoa get a headline role, to see Jango Fett back in the spotlight, and for the screenplay dudes to have Black Manta as a character in the film (always liked black manta!). It would have been awesome to have had Michael Jai White play Black Manta, that guy needs mainstream exposure, and jumping off in a successful superhero movie would have been awesome for him ( and not to be killed off getting a Kakihara smile...). Fun movie, check it out!
Edit: forgot to mention a cool scene in the movie reminiscent of Homer Simpson’s many trips off of cliff faces where Black Manta has a bit of a tumble, but it’s shown from a self steady cam perspective, it was such a sweet shot, and I don’t I’ve seen it done anywhere else before!

That's the best review I've seen for Aquaman, it makes me want to see it! Also, at first I thought you were talking about this Black Manta and not this one 😁 Timely comparison too because I actually just saw Thor: Ragnarok for the first time two nights ago and really liked it. So your review here definitely makes me want to see Aquaman. I've never been able to either after I saw this years ago...

Freeway - A white trash teen goes on a road trip to her grandmother's trailer in this goofy 90's homage to the classic Little Red Riding Hood tale. Parts of this are incredibly creepy and gross, but there's also a lot of absurd comedy thrown into the mix...which leaves it somewhat uneven tonally, even if it's a pretty good time overall. Special mention must also be made of Brittany Murphy's lesbian prisoner character, who is skin crawlingly weird in several scenes. 6.5/10
John Wick Chapter 3 - The John Wick murder-thon continues with no signs of slowing down to catch its breath. Like every film in this series, the story is nothing special, but it absolutely excels in the action department. Long, continuous takes of well choreographed fighting executed by competent martial artists, with nary a rapid edit to be seen. Add in several high profile cameos and several nods to classic action and western films, and you're left with a winner. The bar has been set very high for Chapter 4. 8/10

Well, it appears that Spider-Man will be exiting the MCU after a dispute between Sony (who owns the film rights to Spider-Man) and Disney (who owns Marvel Films, which produced the last couple of Spider-Man movies and something called "The Avengers). Supposedly it's because Disney wanted a bigger piece of the pie for the Spider-Man films (nevermind that the jillion other Disney-Marvel exclusive films all make hundreds of millions of $$$ each). Sony said no and Disney ghosted on them. At least that's the story I've seen. You know how internet news goes; less about absolute facts and more about trying to get the news out as fast as you can, inaccuracies and all.
I weep to think about how Sony will screw up the two scheduled Spider-Man films featuring Tom Holland

Hoping the backlash/reaction to this will drive the parties to reconsider. This may all be part of a longer negotiating process, too. Apparently Disney wanted a 50% cut, and Sony offered them a 5% cut, and both offers were rejected. Hopefully this is all part of a process that ends with them meeting somewhere they (and we) can both live with.
Sony just bought Insomniac (who made the super successful Spiderman game recently) so they seem to be trying to throw their weight around where Spiderman is concerned. Which may be unwise - Disney can much more easily afford to walk away, they still own the merchandising rights, the last SM movie was Sony's most successful movie ever (but far from Disney's), AND Sony has apparently already seen a stock drop, so I'm hoping an accord can be reached.

I'm sick of Disney. They killed Star Wars for me. I have no interest in Woke MCU Phase 4. I hope Sony can do a decent job.
I hear that in addition to Bill and Ted 3 (which I am stoked for), Keanu will be in The Matrix 4.
Why? Neo and Trinity died...let them stay dead.
As for the Aquaman love, glad to see it. I saw it in theaters and I enjoyed it. I'm sick though...I actually like the DC universe. I received a box set for Christmas from a former co-worker.

Just finished watching Harry Potter deathly hallows part two, thus concluding the eight part film series today. I didn’t watch these as they came out because I was too cool for any of that shit at the time, but man, these are pretty great! It's been fun watching the cast mature with the story, and what an amazing supporting cast of Brit vets (daaayum I love me some Gary Oldman!). To top it all off, John Williams scores another amazing, timeless, modern classic soundtrack that yet another generation of humans will have playing through their heads likely for the duration of their lives! The scenery and creatures were great and somehow often reminded me of Dark Souls (especially the dementors!). Awesome stuff, if you’ve missed these films till now don’t sleep on them. The first ones are a bit kiddie, but keep an open mind and enjoy them for what they are, y’all like pro wrestling, so I know you can suspend disbelief! I am thankful for my coworker convincing me to check these out and envious of her getting to read the books and watch the films as they were released, what a fun ride that would have been for a kid growing up! Check these movies out!

Check these movies out! Same! Just finally watched all these movies last year. I thought the first few were okay, I wasn't hooked. But they start getting a lot more serious as they go, and I started getting a lot more invested. By the end I had become a fan.

I rented Godzilla King of the Monsters as I've been a long time Godzilla fan...I'm talking owning VHS like Godzilla vs Megalon, Godzilla vs Gigan, Terror of Mechagodzilla, etc.
Anyway, I liked the battles, but the story with the people annoyed me.
It was ok overall.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood - Tarantino takes his time building things up, establishing his characters and moving them around the board like a maestro, letting the tension mount forever without paying it off. Then it all pays off in the most side-splittingly hilarious 5 minutes of film I've seen in ages. With tons of fun cameos and more Easter Eggs than you could keep track of in a single viewing (so many incredible film posters), it's another masterpiece, an earnest love letter to movies and the city that makes 'em. 8.5/10
Thor: Ragnarok - Thor, Loki, Hulk and Valkyrie team up to stop Hela from destroying Asgard. A big, stupid action movie jam packed with bright colors, silly humor and several showstopping CGI fantasy battle sequences. I've said it before and I'll say it again, superhero movies are way better when they don't take themselves seriously at all. This one has the distinct feeling of taking the piss out of the rest of the Marvel Universe, which I fully endorse and appreciate. Thank you, Taika Waititi. 7.5/10
Buffalo Boys - A pair of Indonesian princes raised in the American West return to Dutch occupied Java to avenge the death of their father. The action is a decent mix of gun slinging and sword swinging, with a generous helping of gore. Sadly the action is not as plentiful as one might hope, leaving long passages of film to be carried by some pretty poorly written drama further hampered by weak acting. It's probably not going to be really satisfying for fans of Westerns or Indonesian action cinema. 5.5/10

Love Thor:Ragnarok, really want to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, glad to see you liked it (did you like Hateful Eight? I feel like I’m the only person in the world who did...). Glad to see some reviews again, it’s been too long! Keep them coming! 🙂
