I picked up a Dreamcast to play Fire Pro D, I got it toward the end of its life cycle and had heard it was abundant in great fighting games and SHMUPs. Fire Pro D is one of my all time favourite game experiences as far as FAR exceeding expectations and just generally being excited for every play session, but one other game really blew my mind on the DC, that was Garou: Mark of the Wolves.
I feel like a miserable curmudgeon these days, I’m an inherent optimist and I stay positive in otherwise crappy situations, but for some reason, I just can’t get very excited about anything (media or otherwise). This new Garou entry actually has me excited, first game in a while that I’ve actually been eagerly anticipating. Will I buy it day one? No way, $80 plus is way too steep for me for any game, but I’ll grab it eventually. It makes me happy to see SNK is keeping with tradition and releasing great fighters in the era of pay to win / freemium games!

No one should really be surprised at this point, although I kind of feel like the warrior monk design is cool enough to be its own character: www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZWDIKKvNrcI love this. Heihachi is my favourite fighting game character, period. I knew he was coming back, I never imagined they’d put this awesome twist on his return, icing on the grizzled ol’ bastard cake! Now I’ll actually have to consider trying to justify a semi full price purchase (I usually wait three or four years till the super ultra platinum directors cut edition ends up on sale for $30).

Tekken canon: you're dead, Heihachi.
Hollywood Heihachi Hogan: Doesn't work for me, brother.

Fire Pro D is one of my all time favourite game experiences as far as FAR exceeding expectations and just generally being excited for every play session, but one other game really blew my mind on the DC, that was Garou: Mark of the Wolves. Wow, you found a working Dreamcast recently or set one up that you had for a while? My third one died around 2005 or something like that. I miss it soo much. There are SOO many fighting games on Dreamcast! Garou is one of the best ones. If you find Capcom vs. SNK 2, Alpha 3, Last Blade 2, or even KOF 99, they are all worth picking up. I miss FPD too, especially those initial years when I was first learning the ropes. I feel like a miserable curmudgeon these days, I’m an inherent optimist and I stay positive in otherwise crappy situations, but for some reason, I just can’t get very excited about anything (media or otherwise). I feel like I'm having a similar issue with fighting games right now. I'm excited about all of the games that have been released recently and are in the works. Yet when I actually have time to play them, I don't. I'm not sure if it's because I have too many to choose from and can't commit to one, or if I know that playing them now feels different than it used to. I just don't get the same amount of enjoyment out of them so it doesn't make sense to pour all that time and effort into learning all the characters and the systems in the game. But without that investment, playing them feels kind of hollow. Vicious cycle! I really enjoyed SF6 last summer but haven't picked it up ever since I completed World Tour mode. I've been playing Granblue Versus: Rising occasionally. I love what they did with that game but I feel like I have to start from scratch each time I play. KOF 15 is incredible, and I'll definitely be getting Vice and Mature, but those KOF games are DENSE with required knowledge. I got hyped for the genre after watching some of EVO last weekend but it has not translated into one second of play lol. I really like the City of the Wolves videos I've been seeing though. It's kind of a miracle we're getting that game. I heard we're getting an Art of Fighting and Samurai Showdown action RPG in the future too.

I picked up Fighting EX Layer last week and I've put a few hours into it when I've got time for it - I've been very busy with housework, trying to get rid of junk that I no longer need.
I haven't really dove too much into it yet, but I'm enjoying what little I've gotten to play of Area and Pullum. I haven't tried out Garuda yet, but he's my favorite character from the Street Fighter EX games.
I'm not sure how I feel about the Gougi system yet, but I like it otherwise.
I need to set up Fightcade so I can play some of the classics that I love, like World Heroes.

These reveals are cool, but damn, I wish they’d leave the super attacks out, trying out all of the new supers is one of the best parts of playing a new fighting game!!!

Yeah, I agree with that. I like there being a little mystery for us to try out on our own.
Granted, I doubt I'll remember the ones I see in videos now when I play it next year LOL 🤕

City of the Wolves has such a look to it. I continue to be completely useless at games that have link combos instead of chain combos but goddamn if I'm not probably going to pick this up given the fantastic comic book-like presentation. Might this be the rare fighting game where I play a male character?
