Maniac Pro-Wrestling (Known in Japan as "マニアックプロレス")
Platform: PC Engine
Developer: Hudson Soft Year: 1990 Recently, I came across a Japanese article that stated Maniac Pro-Wrestling was inspired by the Japanese UWF promotion. Naturally, I decided to revisit Maniac Wrestling to see if I could spot any Wrestler likenesses. Gameplay-wise, Maniac Pro-Wrestling is not your standard Wrestling game. Like WCW World Championship Wrestling (NES) or WWF Micro League Wrestling on the home computers, moves are performed by an turn-based RPG style, where players select attacks from a list of techniques. Every attack, grapple and reversal has it's own specific move animation, accompanied by ringside commentary to let players know whether their moves connected or not. The most interesting aspect of Maniac Wrestling is the game's story mode. For a Wrestling title that was released in 1990, I can't think of an older Wrestling game that featured an interactive scenario. The trainer in picture #2 looks like he could be based on Karl Gotch - without the moustache. Stylistically, Maniac Pro-Wrestling's story mode looks quite similar to Champion Road from Super Fire Pro-Wresling Special. Albeit, Special was released four years after Maniac Pro-Wrestling. While I don't have player names at the moment, I can at least show everyone the Wrestler portraits I encountered so far: The player-controlled character is a Japanese Wrestler that eventually learns the Wheel Kick, German Suplex and other special techniques. If I were to guess, this Wrestler is based on Akira Maeda, who was a prominent UWF star at the time. The weakest opponent supports an 80's moustache. My first guess would be Yoshiaki Fujiwara. Opponent number 2. looks like a mix between Genichiro Tenryu and Osamu Kido. The latter being a UWF veteran. Those eyes.... there are two notable black Wrestlers that were featured as foreigners in the UWF: Maurice Smith and Norman Smiley. I ruled out Ernesto Hoost, since Hoost didn't make headlines in Japan until 1993 (specifically, Hoost's involvement with the K1 promotion). I was stumped with this next opponent until I realized this opponent's Lariat takes out insane amounts of damage. I'm guessing this Wrestler is supposed to be based on Stan Hansen (just without the moustache). This next opponent has added dialogue that interrupts the match. His finisher seems to be a Backdrop. The red and blue tights remind me of Dynamite Kid. Though, I wouldn't be surprised if I was far off. I also noticed a second commentator during this match. The commentator looks like NJPW trainer Kotetsu Yamamoto. At the moment, I am getting my butt kicked by the above opponent/rival. Luckily, the game still awards you with stat points even if you lose a match. So, I've entered into another RPG trope ...grinding.

This is still a long way off, but Kenny Omega was at SEGA. They scanned him and created a character model in the Yakuza engine... Omega in Yakuza 8?

Don't think this counts, but... That strange ref glitch giving a thumb up (can't rememeber which WWE2K game it was) is now a official emote in Rumbleverse. 😆

80's Mania Wrestling has a new Wrestler as part of the game's September update. The official writeup states: "Yeah he's still the Chief, but he's also known as... BEEF BUFFALO! Step in the ring with prime Beef and you'll find yourself well-done!" According to twitter, Beef Buffalo is based on King Kong Bundy.

For today's reference, we'll be looking at new concept sketches for 80's Mania Wrestling. The sketches themselves are designs for upcoming game cards.
From two of the panels, I can pick out The Ultimate Warrior and Hulk Hogan.

There is a Tinieblas Jr. game on STEAM. Hmm, I think Tinieblas would lose his mask to Juan Aguacate of Guacamelee 99 times out of 100. I’d like to see something like a slaughterhouse remake with Darby Allen or something.

80's Mania Wrestling update:
"ORCINUS has an appetite for annihilation and OCULUS sees more clearly than ever!
Between the massive size and the wild prophesying, you'll definitely see the monster and the medium coming!"Orcinus is based on Viscera; while Oculus is based on Mideon. Modern Mania Wrestling recently posted these concept sketches from 2018: How many Wrestlers likenesses can you spot from these designs? After a little intermission, I'm back to scanning the rest of Super Fire Pro-Wrestling X's Winning Strategy guide from 1995. In total, I've scanned 107 out of 255 of the pages for the guide.

Today, I happened upon another obscure Japanese Pro-Wrestling game! Pro-Wrestling Gong
(Known in Japan as "プロレスゴング") Platform: Mobile App Year: 2016 Developer: Senken Inc Right off the bat, I found the promotional art perplexing. Where else are you going to see obscure 90's kickboxer Dick Vrij as the poster boy for a Pro-Wrestling game ...in 2016?! Only in Pro-Wrestling Gong. Abdullah The Butcher sprays poison mist into the eyes of Brock Lesnar!
Stylistically, Pro-Wrestling Gong reminds me of the 1986 8-Bit classic Pro-Wrestling on the NES.
History tends to repeat itself. There are eight characters to choose from. The first is: Masaharu Inoda (Antonio Inoki) Terry Rock (Brock Lesnar) Yuri Mikhailokov (Fedor Emelianenko) Mario Greyla (Rickson Gracie) Rashanu Mudra (Abdullah The Butcher) Interesting enough, Rashanu is billed from India here.
Hans Krauzer (Dick Vrij) Peyote Caras (Mil Mascaras) Lastly, Andreil Bosch (Andre The Giant). Andreil is billed from Canada. A nod to Andre making a name for himself Wrestling in Montreal. Rashanu (Abdullah) is the new Champion! No Japanese is needed to start enjoying Pro-Wrestling Gong. For just a buck, I found this title to be a pleasant, little distraction.
The official product description reads:
"You can easily play professional wrestling online with people, friends, and AI all over the world! Choose your favorite wrestler from 8 wrestlers and defeat 7 enemies by falling, giving up, or KO (B button near the fallen opponent). Win the hot battle and get the seat of the real champion!"

Wow, what an odd roster! Rickson, Fedor, and Vrij?! Brock?! I think Peyote Caras is one of my new top ten wrestler AKA names, too! What a cool find, the classic shooter heavy roster is really strange, and it seems this game is aimed straight at 40 plus year old fans of the Japanese combat sports scene! I think you’re spot on with Vrij, I was trying to remember who else wore long tights back in the day, but I think Vrij is a good guess! Nice find!

Interestingly enough, Peyote Caras uses a moveset inspired by Tiger Mask. Rolling Sobat, Senton, Flip Kick. Plus the Tiger Mask-esque tights. The shooter is certainly Vrij. His pin technique is even Vrij's kneeling knee bash to the head.
Masaharu Inoda, (whom I pegged as Antonio Inoki)'s bio mentions that he is a former Champion from a company that collapsed; now drifting from promotion to promotion. Sounds like Akira Maeda and the collapse of RINGS.
During my work breaks, I've been trying to use the online VS feature to see if there's anyone still playing this game. No luck so far (and with the game being 6 years old now, I doubt online support is still available to begin with). Still, as an old school Puroresu diehard, I felt the game was worth the $1.
