Dropping the AKI engine and/or not creating a reasonable facsimile has always been a mystery to me. It has been a fan favourite for decades, and if you’re a fan of wrestling games, it’s a VERY FUN engine to play. I have never liked the Yukes engine, it’s always felt awkward, everything feels floaty, the moves never quite feel impactful, the strikes just feel mushy and more like a suggestion than an attack, and 2K’s stuff doesn’t feel much better in my opinion, either. I feel the same way about the U.S. Yukes games. I never played the Japanese ones so I don't know how they differ. But the only U.S. WWE ones I liked were the first Smackdown and "Here comes the Pain." Every other one that I played (and keep in mind I haven't played recent ones) just were not to my liking for the same exact reasons you listed. The impact was just not there, the striking felt really weird (i love your "suggestion" metaphor!), and every match felt like a frenetic sprint to the finish. It's crazy HOW much people (including myself) loved No Mercy and place it as one of the standards of wrestling games and yet we never got a follow-up. I know some people prefer WWF2K and VPW2 but No Mercy is still a beloved game but that ended the series. That was it. I loved that game. It's easily in the Top 3 wrestling games to me along with Fire Pro and KOC II. If it wasn't for "the glitch", I would have played it for even longer. On that note, it's frustrating we never got a follow-up to KOC II as well. But that is more understandable given Spike's financial limitations. THQ and WWE have deeper pockets.

Langrisser I and II Remake coming to Switch and PS4 on the 13th. I rarely turn down strategy games when they come to console and I won't be starting now.
Nioh 2 also releasing in a few days. My copy has shipped so I probably better get around to playing the first one.

I miss KOC way more than the AKI engine, to be honest. I think it still needed a little refinement (mostly in fluidity of movement, especially transitioning between standing, walking, attacking, and blocking, the latter of which could've used an overhaul itself) and more visual creative freedom, but it was real, real close to being the best wrestling game for me. Just the depth and breadth of matches you could have consistently was head and shoulders above anything before, and other than FPW with wise mod usage, nothing has still come that close for me.
I'd be interested to see how the AKI engine holds up, but it will have be updated heavily to remotely portray modern wrestling, especially AEW wrestling, which isn't exactly known for the deliberate, methodical pace of the prior AKI games.
Still, having more games that are different gives us more options as far as gameplay and creativity go, so I'm hoping they manage to make it good.

Methodical is a good word for it, especially concerning No Mercy. I forgot how much of a speed difference there was between it and WM2K/VPW2 until recently.

And mine as well, can't wait for it! Thankfully, Doom Eternal didn't live up to its name like Duke Nukem Forever did, in regards to development time.

Random unsubstantiated rumor of the day from unconfirmed Konami insider: Sony is making offers to Konami for obtaining the licensing or full purchase for Castlevania, Metal Gear and Silent Hill. Why? Sony wants to remake MGS1 and MGS2, reboot the Castlevania series and do a soft reboot of Silent Hill all as PS5 exclusives. Also mentioned Hideo Kojima would be involved with the Metal Gear and Silent Hill games as well as former Silent Hill staff. Now if there is any truth to that rumor, it would be money well spent by Sony. Going into next gen with three huge exclusive IP's like that would easily secure Sony's top spot in the console market; although personally I think that is going to happen regardless during the next gen era anyway.
EDIT: Norman Reedus confirms he is working on something horror related with Hideo Kojima. Late last month Kojima tweeted out "Sorry to be Silent everyone! I've been really busy lately..."
