57 call-ins at the plant tonight, although only three in my shop counting myself which surprised me. Was expecting at least six. Was almost tempted to make the trip in anyway after I heard that, but then I remembered I have some of the least amount of absenteeism in the entire plant for almost a decade, so screw it. It'll hurt the pay check a little, but I only have a power bill and a car payment left for this month anyway.

5 C and sunny here, our mountains of snow (weβve had a LOT this year, not anywhere near what Nthβs neck of the woods can get, but way more than usual) are melting! Nice reprieve after nearly a month straight of -25 to -30 C temperatures! π Nice!! Glad to hear a little bit of progress is happening in your area to resist the tyranny of January!! Northeast US just dealt with a weekend of single digit F weather and just as it's starting to warm up, we're gonna get hit by a snow storm tonight. So yeah, Spring anyone? π
I've heard stories of the "old days" in the plant where if people couldn't make it in during snow storms the company would round up anyone with a four wheel drive truck and send them out to pick people up. Nowadays I think people would just laugh if someone from the plant came to pick them up in a blizzard and tell them to get out of there. LOL it's like a school bus picking people up but during a snow storm that school would be closed for!! β It's like Office Space only Lumberg doesn't just come to your desk, he comes to your house. "Yeahhhh, I'm gonna need you to get out of bed now and make me some coffee." I'm off mid February to the end of March and will hopefully miss out on any more major winter events in that time period. That's really good. It should be mid February before we know it. Heck, at the rate the past few years have gone, it may be 2025 before we know it! Hopefully it stays calm for you there before your break starts. Well, woke up to an RCMP weather advisory stating all non-essential traffic should stay off the roads due to drifting from high winds. That's all I needed to hear. Just called in to work. Tonight off and only 8 hours tomorrow night. Nice! π

Well, jinxed myself. Itβs RAINING this morning, and the temperature is supposed to drop by 20 C over the next 24 hours, and that rain will become blowing snow over the next eight hours with accumulations of around 15 cm. We actually had dry roads to drive on for a few days for the first time in a couple of months, now weβre back to the skating rink. The ride home from work and to work tomorrow should be a great adventure! π₯³

One of the things that has really been a thorn in my feathers this winter so far (and really over the past year) has been the tremendous drops of temperature in a short period of time. The temperature increasing or dropping 20 degrees in like 12 hours is horrible and practically impossible to prepare for if you are out working during those hours or even asleep. Like I go to sleep fairly comfortable and wake up either boiling or freezing π₯Ά
Right now I'm just thankful the temp is in the high 30's and away from the single digits. Lowest temp on record yesterday was 2 degrees! I think we're getting single digits again next weekend. But I'm ok with that over the weekend. I hibernate anyway then. I don't get paid to deal with the outside world on weekends π

It was quite a drive getting out of work at 3am last night. Not that the weather was bad, but that so much snow had fallen it completely changed the landscape and multiple times on the drive home I lost track of where I was since I was unable to see the usual landmarks I pass on the way home. It was more like driving on the moon.

Glad you made it home safely. That sounds like an otherworldly experience ππ
It's like "uncanny valley" but with geography and landmarks.

It was 75 degrees last week and this week it's 22.
I hate it here. Make up your damn mind, weather!

That is basically obscene to me. Like an actual obscenity cast down to the world from the clouds.
If the temperature changes 50 degrees in one week, some kind of ancient subterranean alarms should go off.
I also hate these 25 degree changes in the course of one day (or worse, one night). I look at my weather app and start wondering whether or not the world got infected with the same wonky RNG as Fire Pro π

I lived in New York State for 33 years. I'm used to it being cold/hot as Hell, but to swing 50 degrees in such a short timespan? No thank you. It's supposed to be in the mid-upper 40s for the rest of the week. This icestorm blizzard thing really really threw things through a loop.

Dug my walkway and car out of a half foot of snow yesterday. Rookie numbers probably for you Northeastern people, but I live on the Northern Panhandle bordering West Virginia. We usually avoid super big snowfalls as they gravitate towards Pittsburgh, but yuck. At least I had a paid holiday off yesterday.

This icestorm blizzard thing really really threw things through a loop. Yeah, I definitely remember you moving to NC! π I've only ever lived in the northeast but it's getting crazy here. I don't love the cold but I do love consistency. When it's 30 outside, I want it to stay 30 and not jump to 50 and then 10 in one day. There's value in knowing that when I leave the home in 30 degree weather to dare venture into Apocalypse World that I don't have to alternately bring a f'n Taun Taun carcass and a bathing suit in my same bag. I actually dislike the cold now as I've gotten older but I still hate the temperature swings more. It's impossible knowing what to set the thermostat to before going to sleep. It's like I go to sleep ok, wake up 3 hours later freezing, and then wake up in the morning in a hot box. This may be the ole man geese talkin' but in mah day, we were cold and stayed cold. We didn't get alternatingly freezing and hot within a 6 hour time span. That way leads dragons. Ice storms and snow storms suck in general though but at least in 30+ degrees they can melt on their own. Single digits and ice are not what I signed up for here. If I wanted that, I'd go to the South Pole. At least they have cool research bases, Cthulhu, and penguins π§ Dug my walkway and car out of a half foot of snow yesterday. Rookie numbers probably for you Northeastern people, but I live on the Northern Panhandle bordering West Virginia. We usually avoid super big snowfalls as they gravitate towards Pittsburgh, but yuck. At least I had a paid holiday off yesterday. A half foot of frozen snow is a horrible chore to have to dig anything out of. But if the snow keeps you indoors overall and lets you pop back here, it's all worth it ππ

Welp. We got an ice storm last weekend and we're gonna be getting hit with similar conditions this weekend. Not looking forward to it if 5 to 9 inches of snow is predicted along with ice and wind.

I just saw you moved to NC. Good luck with that. They're notorious for being pants with winter weather.
My stepsister still lives there and she got disaster pay for 0.5 inches of snow lol.

Hope everyone hangs in there this weekend π We got some snow today and are back to single digit temperatures this weekend. I see "6 degrees F" and think the world glitched out π€ͺ

They downgraded it to "two inches of snow and ice".
It's been raining pretty hard here all day - At least since I woke up around noon. The weather alert is in effect from 7 PM tonight until about 7 PM Sunday.
