HISTORY/TIMELINE
1962 - MCW (Merchant Class Wrestling, later Mononoke Championship Wrestling) is founded by Donnie (Don) Flippo. Don Flippo first established the company after leaving the executive board of Kodak film in 1962. Don’s love of wrestling did not emerge from wrestling in the Southern US, but from a business trip to Japan in 1959. The excitement of seeing Rikidōzan live (Don thought he was going to see a Sumo match) led to a lifetime love of Japanese wrestling.
1964 - Richard 'The River" Johnson is the first MCW Heavyweight title.
1965- MCW applies to be part of the NWA but is rejected. Due to this slight, Don refused to bring in talent from other NWA affiliated promotions.
1965-1972 - Don brings Japanese and Mexican talent into the river region of Alabama and slowly grows his territory over the next several years. Famous wrestlers include Jaguar I, Big John Boy Douglas, and Bill Flippo (one of Don's sons). Don was also one of the few southern promotions to feature African American wrestlers.
1972 - Don steps down as head booker, leaving MCW to Bill. Bill begins to expand MCW beyond the borders of the Black Belt.
1973- Tiger Prince I debuts. He is the first masked wrestler in MCW and becomes an instant fan favorite.
1974 – The first dojo class of MCW begins training. This class will include legends such as Kid Kitsune, Lord Van High and Saturn.
1975 - The INTERCON title is created. Big John Boy Douglas is the first champion.
1978 - Kid Kitsune, now King Kitsune, wins his first MCW Heavyweight title by defeated Lord Van High. Lord Van High had held the title for over 2 years.
1979 - Bill Flippo retires from full time wrestling to focus on the MCW dojo and growing family. He will do this three more times.
1982 - King Kitsune and friendly rival Saturn star in the Saturday morning show “MCW Super Saturday Adventures” on TNBC and WSFA. The show would run until 1995. The show featured wrestling matches, local and regional bands, and poorly animated cartoons featuring King Kitsune and Saturn.
April 1983- Saturn wins his first MCW Heavyweight title defeating Toku Koba in the finals of the Ring King tournament. King Kitsune had to drop the title following a car accident outside of Wetumpka, Alabama thus creating the need for the tournament.
September 1983 - Lord Van High regains the MCW Heavyweight title in a bloody dog collar match with Saturn. Lord VH will hold this title for another three years, a record that still hasn't been matched.
1987 - The Juniorweight division is created. Before this MCW did not have true weight divisions. The division finds great popularity and success and begins the next big growth spurt and expansion of MCW.
1989 - Lord Van High retires from wrestling. He maintains kayfabe even in his retired life. He was known to snarl at children and spit on people who he deemed "lower scum". No one seems to mind as people around Montgomery took his jeers as a point of local pride.
1991 - The Super Crazy Juniorweight title is created. Following an international tournament, the recently debuting Great Oni defeats Jaguar II to become the inaugural champion.
1992 - Future stars Super Kakita and Hanshin Tiger joined the MCW dojo.
1993 - Despite using Japanese talent for decades, it was not until 1993 that MCW talent is able to do a show in Japan in conjunction with View Japan. The show is a great success especially the violent and emotional Saturn vs. Kerry Texan and magnificent King Kitsune vs. Victory Musashi
1994 - Don Flippo passes away following a stroke.
1995 - Jaeger Flippo, Bill's son, despite being 10 years old at the time, joins the Dojo. Bill Flippo announces his retirement from wrestling. Despite this announcement, Bill wins the MCW Heavyweight title.
1996 - Great Oni defeats Bill Flippo to win the MCW Heavyweight title. Great Oni is the first person from the Juniorweight division to hold a heavyweight title. Great Oni post matches attacks a prone Bill, causing nerve damage in Bill's left arm. Bill's son Jaeger, a recent dojo graduate, chases Oni away. This would be the beginning of a 15+ year rivalry.
1997- Both Saturn and King Kitsune have their final match against each other. The match is rather bloody and ends with King Kitsune finally putting away his friend with a piledriver. King Kitsune, surprising, left the ring first and allowed Saturn to bask in glory one more time.
1998-2004 - The last of the old guard had mostly retired. Super Kakita, Hanshin Tiger, Jaeger Flippo become the faces of the MCW. Lee Gold Jr., Great Oni, and Master Daddy were their grand evil rivals. The midcard is anchored by David Moon, Eric Hoyt, Tiger Prince II/III, Mystery Leather, Super Stereo, Jack Mono, Chris Lunar, and the brothers Bruno (Max and Bruno).
2001 – Kling Klang Pro Wrestling out of Birmingham, Alabama closes down/merges with MCW. Owner of KKPW, Lil Bean, joins the juniorweight division.
2004 - Hanshin Tiger wins his first and only MCW Heavyweight title. He tolds the title for 6 months before losing it to Master Daddy.
2005 - First singles match between Great Oni and Jaeger Flippo. Match goes to 60-minute time limit draw.
2006 - The first annual Juniorweight FIGHT! tournament takes place. The finals between Jaguar III and Super Kakita ends with Great Oni misting Kakita, allowing Jaguar to win the tournament and the Super Crazy title. Jaguar and Oni would run rampant over the juniorweight division.
2007 - Jaeger finally is able to defeat Great Oni in singles action, winning his first of 4 MCW Heavyweight Titles.
2008- Lil Bean retires after breaking his leg in a freak accident during a Super Crazy title match with Super Kakita. He recovers and becomes a MCW referee.
2008-2013 MCW continues to dominate the tri-state area (Alabama Tennessee, and Georgia) but is unable to grow further. Attempts at a West Coast tour are postponed due to interference from rival promotions. Eventually shows in North Carolina and West Virginia are put on to great success.
2013 - Expansion into North and South Carolina is going well. Bill Flippo, is able to bring over Japanese talent and begins renovations on the dojo. Ticket sales, attendance and merchandise are the highest MCW has seen since the heyday of King Kitsune.
Feb 2014 - Debut of Thursday Night Combat. The main event was The Bruno Family (Max Bruno and Bruno Bruno) vs. The Buddy Boys (Ted and Chris Buddy) for the MCW Tag Team Championship.
2014- Bill Flippo retires for the last time. He leaves the company to his family and names Jaeger Flippo head booker.
2015 – Former MCW midcard wrestler Mr. Liquid starts Liquid Combat Wrestling (LCW) in Birmingham, Alabama. LCW’s focus on hardcore and deathmatch wrestling makes it a cult favorite.
Jan 1. 2016 - Following a show in North Carolina, the MCW company jet crashes into the Smokey Mountains. Out of the 23 wrestlers/staff and flight crew, there are only five survivors. There were only 5 survivors, one of which Jaeger Flippo. Flippo’s back and legs were broken, leading him to be bedridden for nearly 9 months. It was during this time that the Flippo family sold MCW to TNBC. TNBC renamed MCW to LLCW-i and restarted the promotion from the ground up.
Sept 2017 - In tribute to the wrestlers lost, including MCW legend Great Oni, TNBC hosted the “Great Oni Memorial Tournament 2017”. Fullbug won the tournament in grand fashion by pinning Hanshin Tiger.
March 2018- LLCW-i, the creation of the TNBC and various other producers, flames out. High production costs, low attendance and lack of vision spelled doom for the short lived promotion. Soon after, TNBC went bankrupt following FCC violations, bank fraud and internal managerial misconduct. Hanshin Tiger, Super Kakita, Jaeger Flippo and Tiger Trillions bought the rights to the MCW/LLCW-i footage, name and territory. Tiger Stripe Pro was born.
June 2018 - Jaeger Flippo announces his retirement from wrestling. Years of wrestling as well as the injuries sustained during a plane accident forced his hand. Tiger Prince IV is forced to drop the name and mask out of shame due to poor behavior. As of today, 1/8/2020, there has not been an announcement for Tiger Prince V.
July 2018 - Blood Blossom Wrestling (BBW) is welcomed into the TSP umbrella family. Deals are also made with former MCW World Champion Matsu Toki and his promotion, Astral Ark.
September 1st-2nd, 2018 - Great Oni Memorial Tournament takes place. The finals featured Johnny Rocket of Wrestle Parade defeating Eiji Sato of the Office. The show also saw the dramatic return of The Great Oni. The surprise was slightly spoiled due to a fan, dressed as Great Oni, entering the ring.
September 29th, 2018 - Jaeger Flippo has his retirement match against Senator Phillips from The Office. The match is regarded as one of Jaegers best. During the show El Daidoji defeats Brent Reed for the LLCW-i World Title. Brent Reed is forced to leave TSP. The show would also feature Hido Kagane becoming the first Montgomery Half-Stripe Title champ, and Pole Star and Hyper Dragon defeating Simba Mufasa and Reggie Griggs of AAW to win the Dual Hearts Tag tournament and titles.
October 2018 - Neptune, youngest son of Saturn, leaves TSP citing frustration with management. He signs with Mr. Liquid and LCW soon after. Pole Star and Hyper Dragon also lose the Dual Hearts Tag Title to the Missouris of SCFL at a house show in Montgomery.
Jan. 2019 - Another deal is struck with Montgomery Wrestling Federation (MWF). The deal allows MWF is operate in larger buildings around the river region, while also allowing TSP dojo talent a place to hone their craft.
Feb, 2019 - Blue Mountain Beatdown and Gemini Pro are folded into TSP. Both were/are vanity promotions for Master Daddy and Toku Koba respectively. Both featured semi-retired but famous talent testing out and stretching younger wrestlers.
April 2019 - Combining the MCW Super Crazy , INTERCON, LLCW-i and MCW World Title, the Quad Crown World Title is created. KK Ryu, dojo graduate and longtime runner up, wins the title in a three way match against Tundra Wurm and Demon Warrior.
Sept. 2019 - TSP and SCFL agree to a limit talent exchange. Jaeger Flippo’s cousin Leather Flippo appears several times on SCFL TV.
Sept. - December 2019 - Due to financial issues, TSP was forced to cease running shows. Hanshin Tiger makes an announcement saying TSP will return in 2020, with a new Southeastern-centric title tournament, and a new TV and streaming deal.
Jan. 2020 - A new generation of Flippo’s, William and Gordon, is set to debut as Young Tigers.
Feb. 2022 - Tiger Stripe Pro becomes Tiger Stripe Promotions. Organizational changes cause companies and rosters to move. TSP as a promotion in Montgomery closes and has their last show in Montgomery on 2/25/22. Tiger Stripe Promotions will have two offices based in Montgomery, Alabama, and Osaka, Japan respectfully.
