Completed the Heavyweight Championship in 6 Man Scramble's Victory Road Mode. Now playing through the 6 Man Tag Tournament. Five of the teams so far have their own custom dialogue. The first being Sting, Hogan and Macho Man. Hogan's design is even lifted from his recent appearance in Fire Pro-Wrestling Iron Slam '96! The second team is the WAR faction Fuyuki-Gun (Gedo, Jado and Fuyuki). Team three happens to be NWO Japan while the fourth team features members of the UWFI invasion. After going up against The Hellraisers, I fought Rikidozan, Inoki and Baba to win the 6 Man Championship...a grand total of 24 consecutive matches! Still got some hidden characters to unlock but loving the Championship mode so far.

That all looks amazing! Wasn’t there a championship mode similar to The Saturn game in FPD?

Subsequent games have already differed little, only little things have been added. But in some moments it is worse than premium. Wrestlers now get up too quickly from the floor of the ring, wrestlers now almost never throw an opponent out of the ring, some animations of movements are better in premium, yes, the sprites are larger but the animation could be done better, a good example of the work of sprites and animations in Capcom fighting games, sound effects are worse, for example, the sound of hitting an opponent, it is almost inaudible, the music does not cause much enthusiasm, the best music was in special, there are very few slots for CWA, there are only 16 of them. This is just an opinion, many people find this game good, it has a lot more wrestlers, more wrestlers moves, cpu is more unpredictable, added wrestlers breath, from which now the matches are longer and unexpected, there are elements of chance, MMA is back, there is a new cage match, 6 wrestlers in the ring. But still premium is more outstanding game.

That all looks amazing! Wasn’t there a championship mode similar to The Saturn game in FPD? Similar, yes. There are character portraits for every Wrestler featured in the story mode. All very well made, too. During my recent matches with 6 Man Scramble, I was shocked to find links to old 6 Man Scramble fansites. Sadly, the links no longer work. The screenshot itself was archived from 2009. Though, these pages certainly prove the Fire Pro series was developing a devoted fanbase in the West. Eventually, I'll start posting my own CAWS in the Classic Fire Pro section of these boards. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have a tag team championship to play through.

As for 6 Man Scramble, yeah, the 16 edit spaces is an inconvenience, but I'm sure the cage types, Wrestlers and large portraits (already featured here) ate up a ton of disk space. Going through Scramble has certainly given me more appreciation for the later Fire Pro games. Especially Returns which can hold up to an additional 500 created Wrestlers.

Recently:
Red Dead Redemption 2 - finally finishing!
Super Mega Baseball 3 - I got back into it recently after buying it and playing it a lot last summer. Practice mode for "Home Run" derbies is fun.
Fire Pro Wrestling World of MoveCraft - the usual staple.
Final Fantasy VI - finished the story last month. The ending with the improved music quality was excellent. I haven't been playing it as much since but I'm still leveling up the rest of my party. It's been fun concentrating on different characters this time around. I scratched the surface with Gau in the GBA release but got more into him this time. Relm is also a fun surprise. I never really understood her "Control" skill but it's come in great use dominating Dinosaur forest.

I just completed Pro-Wrestling Sengokuden Hyper Tag Match. A game I feel is one of the worst 3D Wrestling game ever made. 22 matches later, the final opponent of World Championship was fittingly a Mitsuharu Misawa clone. "Hopper's" elbows weren't quick enough to dodge my Maeda clone's palm strikes and submission holds. No championship belt, no hidden characters. No special message. Boom. Credits and fade out.

Decided to finally get The Banner Saga trilogy off the backlog. I forgot how much I love this game series. It combines strategy turn-based battles with a rudimentary camp management mechanic and choose your own adventure style narrative. While learning the slightly convoluted combat system I've restarted my game several times and each subsequent playthrough I've made several different choices that have had both negative and positive impacts. From what I've experienced so far your characters can't actually die in battle. If they get knocked out of play they become 'Injured' and are still usable although suffer negative buffs until they are properly healed in camp. You can even lose some battles and the story will still continue, although their are key story battles that if you lose, it's game over. Also if your caravan implodes due to casualties and morale it's also game over.
There is perma-death and perma-removal as decisions you make in the narrative portion of the game can lead to character deaths or simply having a character want to leave the party to never be seen again. Same with recruiting new characters in unlikely ways. So you're never really sure who is coming and who is going at any point. There is very little in the way of character management you have to worry about as every character comes with their own unique weapons and abilities. All you have to worry about is equipping a stat buffing item to a character and spending stat points as they level up.

Cancelled my Steam Deck preorder. Will still get one at some point, but I’m getting desperate for a new PC. Only two more payments on my latest Tomenosuke and then I can start putting money to a new PC.

As a lover of awful games, I'm currently playing 3D Wrestling title Pro-Wrestling Sengokuden. A few posts ago, I highlighted the second game in the series (Sengokuden 2 Hyper Tag Match) calling it the worst 3D Wrestling game ever made. Sengokuden 1 on the other hand is one of the earliest Wrestling simulators that was released in 1997. Unfortunately, the entire game is in Japanese and there are only three modes. All of which are different variations of the booking simulator. So, if you're the kind of player that enjoys imported games with little to no knowledge of the Japanese language required, Sengokuden isn't the game for you. Sengokuden's knockoff Muta and Chono clones. The actual likenesses are locked in the game's simulator modes. Serving as opponents from different promotions that the player can book. At the moment, I have yet to figure out how to actually control the Wrestlers. It seems the player just sets up matches and watches the computer do the legwork for both sides. The only option I discovered so far is a setting to skip matches entirely. Even by 1997's standards, the graphics of the Wrestler models in Sengokuden are painful to look at. Keep in mind, Sengokuden was released the same year as WCW World Tour on the N64. Adding insult to injury, the character portraits are downright awful. Would you guess that these two are based off of Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody? Luckily, I found a section in the Scenario modes that analyzes (seemingly) all of the Wrestlers ...without having to sit through any matches. The roster and all of the fictitious promotions are currently being dissected in my "Wrestler Appearances In Other Video Games" thread which you can read here: criticalclub.com/thread/1620/wrestler-appearances-video-games?page=22

Just discovered the Hard West games. Xcom set in the wild west with a supernatural twist and some RPG elements make for a pretty compelling series. Bought the first game on PS4 and the second game only recently came out on PC, but I am going to wait for the PS4/PS5 version and get that instead of the PC version.

I just heard about these games too. Like a week or two ago on a podcast. They sound really interesting. Gonna look into them more soon.

The first one goes on sale on the switch quite often, it’s been on my wish list a while now. Have you tried it yet, the sale price is always good, but with the ol backlog looming, I can never bring myself to pull the trigger.

Time for another ultra-obscure game mention: Maniac Wrestling on the PC Engine. Probably the earliest example of a story mode in a Pro-Wrestling game that I can think of. The story has a similar feel to Fire Pro-Wrestling Special, but the gameplay is purely RPG turn-based.
Like Tecmo Pro-Wrestling, you can adjust the stats of your Wrestler after a match with specific training techniques. The more points you gather, the more moves you can unlock. While not the first turn-based Wrestling game (WWF Micro League Wrestling from 1987 comes to mind), I feel Maniac Wrestling was still pretty innovative for a Japan-only title that was released back in 1990.
By the end of the first act, I've already flew to Mexico and saved a beautiful blonde from the clutches of two thugs. Too bad the CPU is ridiculously cheap with submission holds.

Wrestling Revolution 2D on steam. Like many of us, I've been playing MDickie's games on and off for years. Wrestling Revolution 2D is a throwback to MDickie's 16-bit Federation Wrestling from 2001. At the moment, I just set up an 8 Man Elimination with Zangief, The Great Muta, Vega, Bruce Lee, Jushin Liger, Robocop, Mr. T. and Mike Tyson. The match just so happens to have 52 sticks of dynamite. no referee and a barbed wire ring! Needless to say, the match got pretty 'explosive' pretty quickly! Some call him a madman, other's a game design genius. But, no matter what side you're on, there's no denying the fringe charm to MDickie's work. A charm that you just can't find anywhere else. The type of insanity that is currently inspiring me to create more content in Fire Pro World.
