Went to Saint Denis for the first time. Spent too long wandering the town and checking out all the vendors (and getting a badass portrait taken), ended up having to spend the night. Went to a saloon that rented rooms, but decided to get a drink first. Bought a whisky, the bartender put it in front of me, and the prompt said R2 to drink. Well I guess I accidentally moved the controller a bit and wasn't focused on the drink any longer. Pressing R2 made me pull out my revolver and shoot the bartender, lol. Cue dozens of people running out screaming into the streets. Bartender didn't die, but an immediate investigation began into his assault.
I immediately decided that I was just gonna take it on the chin and serve my time for it. I did shoot an unarmed man in a crowded bar after all. I holstered my weapon and calmly walked outside to surrender to the police I was sure would be descending on the place in no time. A uniformed cop was actually right outside the saloon, but he was not hostile. I waited a few seconds, and the investigation just stopped. No bounty, not wanted, nothing. Fine then. I walked back into the saloon and got a bath and a room lol.

Sounds like your conscience paid your penance and paved your way toward freedom.
Saint Denis is clearly a mighty fine place for a gentleman 🎩🤠
By the way, how do you switch focus on objects in front of you? I'm having a helluva time trying to switch focus on the objects in cabinets and stuff on the floor. Is it the D-Pad to toggle your focus on objects?

Well, I know if you hold L2 to greet/antagonize a person, you can flick the right stick to cycle focus between the different people if you're in a crowded area/there's more than one person in your immediate field of view. I also know if you're looking at multiple objects in a chest or cabinet, you can simply hold square and you'll pick up everything....but I'm not sure if the right stick flick will cycle through the objects.
EDIT: also, I'm spending a ridiculous amount of money on Hair Tonics, but my beard is reaching epic proportions. WORTH IT.

Thanks, I didn't know that. There are so many little commands in this game that I just haven't picked up yet. Either I missed/misunderstood the prompt in the game or was never given it. I'm trying to find like a "master guide" online to every action but haven't yet. In a way, I kind of like the mystery though. But in a wayer way, I want to know 😁 I also know if you're looking at multiple objects in a chest or cabinet, you can simply hold square and you'll pick up everything....but I'm not sure if the right stick flick will cycle through the objects. I've been having issues easily cycling through different chests and cabinets or cycling between bodies on the ground for looting. I know there's a way to do it, just not sure how. EDIT: also, I'm spending a ridiculous amount of money on Hair Tonics, but my beard is reaching epic proportions. WORTH IT.
Nice! I've kept Arthur pretty clean shaven so far ("2" is the level I have for him right now for each section of facial hair but I brought his chin down to "1" last night for some variety) and have kept the same attire for him since the first night I played. I want to start trying out different appearances and hair/beard lengths.

So if I understand this right, you can: 1) Hogtie someone by running & tackling them (usual run & tackle command) while you have the lasso drawn? 2) Stand in front of them with lasso drawn and hogtie them by pressing R2? You can do both? Yeay my brothers, verily I tell you it is so. The running chasing tackle, I can't remember if I hit triangle, circle, or R2. Which is to all our benefit as we will have fun trying all three. The standing one, yes just hit R2 without even aiming with L2. I first found out early in chapter 1 during the train robbery. When it was over and I had to deal with the three guards, I forced them into the VIP car and tied em up. Thought I'd send them on their way, we had what we came for after all. As I was making my way up to the engine and looting everything along the way, Dutch's words rang out in my head: "just make sure they don't send anyone looking for us". Well. I'm nothing if not a good soldier. I walked back, stepped up into the captivity car, and put a bullet in each of their heads. (I would have slit their throats like you could do it in the first game by crouching near with a knife and attacking, but that doesn't work anymore and it sucks) Also, geese, you can cycle through different bodies/interactable objects clustered together by hitting R1. There should be a prompt when that's available on lower right. Also, like Deni said, while holding L2 can flick right stick in different directions to switch to items, helpful at general stores to switch up down left right as available.

There's something awesome about chasing down a bounty (or witness) with lasso in hand and tackling him/her to the ground and tying up seemlessly. It's so cool that you don't have to stand and throw, makes for more dynamic hogties. You can just stand in front of someone and hit R2 to automatically throw them down and tie up. WHAT WHAT WHAT!?!?!?!!? You can lasso/hogtie someone now without having to throw the lasso? No f'n way. GAME CHANGER!!!!! So if I understand this right, you can: 1) Hogtie someone by running & tackling them (usual run & tackle command) while you have the lasso drawn? 2) Stand in front of them with lasso drawn and hogtie them by pressing R2? You can do both? Also if you get drunk and try and ride your horse and ride it into a store you can throw yourself through the window and into said store. Not that I’ve done that... twice... and another time where the character was stone cold sober...(maybe I need to work on horse riding in towns) LOL awesome! I can't wait to try throwing myself through the window. What a way to make an entrance! It's like Black Friday every day... 100 years early! 🤣 I had a rather interesting situation occur thanks to the big double leg takedown. I wandered my way down to Saint Denis for my first time and was taking in the sights, looking at the storefronts, staying far away from paying for the supremely expensive meals and mostly just minding my own business. That's when I heard a numbskull opining to the general public "I'm not a hater, I'm a racist!" I eventually track the owner of the irksome voice down and attempted to verbally antagonize him, but the game wouldn't let me do so. Instead, I chose my preferred option, and popped him in the face with a big right hand. The self-proclaimed racist goes running off and I decide to give chase down the crowded street. He cuts a corner, and I cut the corner at top speed...only to barrel right into an unfortunate woman who just happened to possess higher melanin levels than Arthur or the idiot racist.
I jumped up as fast as the game would let me, and her companion tried to attack me. I avoided his headlong swing, and renewed my pursuit of the racist, using the opportunity to conveniently avoid my accidental conflict as well. Eventually, I managed to corner the twerp, and unleashed fisticuffs once again, battering him into oblivion. But just as I finished up with my righteous clobbering, the police decided that I was an enemy of the public, and drew their firearms on me. I tried to surrender as I would have with Mr. Marston, standing as still as a stone, but they did not accept my stationary posture as acceptable, and proceeded to riddle poor Arthur Morgan with bullets. I ran away, seeing red at the corner of my vision, jumping into a courtyard, through back alleys and into a construction site. It was there that the final bullet did its terrible deed, and exterminated an outlaw with extreme prejudice.
Of course, all of this would have been avoidable, would I not have tackled a black woman while attempting to brutalize a vocal racist, but such is life in the Wild West.

I read a detailed guide on facial hair/tonics (it was a matter of some import to me). To grow Arthur's hair/beard from length 1 to 7 takes approx 66 in game days. Taking a hair tonic will double your growth rate for a limited time (the game actually tells you when the tonic is no longer active). You can take up to three at once, and they stack, for up to 8 times normal growth rate.
I bought 3, drank em all, then bought 3 more. When the first tonics stop working, I drink the next 3 and head back to the nearest store to refill my stock. It seems parts of your facial hair do not all grow at the same rate, either. I currently have a Level 9 mustache, but only level 7 chin and level 8 mutton chops.
Also, interestingly, your hair and beard will naturally stop growing at level 7. The only way to get growth beyond that up to level 10 is to use hair tonics.

I love not paying off bounties and the corresponding feeling of being a hunted man, chased throughout the land. The way bounty hunters are handled in this game is perfect for me. The erie music creeping in letting you know they're near and looking for you (helpful with no HUD [hold down on d-pad for quick options!]), the fact that they actually do look for you like they're tracking you, even having one guy get off horseback to examine tracks and look around.
They don't just automatically ride in a blaze of gunfire every time. You have the option of standing your ground and laying them down, but you can also keep on moving and lose them. It's a fantastic feeling, being on the run, never getting comfortable in one place too long.
I think their rate of showing up is actually tied to how long you stay in one location too. When I'm constantly on the move, I hardly ever see them. But when I double back or camp out in one location for a while (like I did for several days while hunting a legendary buck), once they find out where you are they come after you with more frequency. What a nice touch.

I love that move. On the plus side, I also love the new stealth chokes from behind while pressing O. I should have lasso't those guys on the train now that I think about it. You made sure they didn't talk. I just let them run free and i wonder if that can come back to haunt me and the gang in the future. DUTCH - I FAILED YA! I love how they come for you when you get too comfortable. I love the whole idea of bounty hunters chasing you and not just the police. This adds a totally different dynamic and brings a little of "Undead Nightmare" unease and sense of urgency to the game. What a story!! I'm really looking forward to seeing if Herbert Moon is in the game. I want to antagonize him until he runs away and then give chase. There are a lot of places in this game that look far less desirable than the "club houses" I shared with him in RDR 1. He never wanted to be part of the club though 😈 I still don't know how to surrender to the police 😓

It ain't stealthy, but you CAN throat slit by running tackling a guy with your knife out.
and you can surrender to police by letting them get close enough to you to L2 them. there's an option to give up peacefully if your gun is holstered.
EDIT: also, another lasso related game-changer: I accidentally discovered that you can lasso corpses. If you get into an altercation on the road and end up killing like 5 dudes, it can take forever to pick each of them up and sloooooowly walk into the bushes to hide their corpses. Just lasso em and drag, it's WAY faster. Haven't tested this on dead animals yet, but logic dictates you should be able to do that too, should you so desire.

I've found solace up in the Grizzlies, the only territory where I don't have a bounty on my head. So I know it kinda sucks that when you save/load or set up camp, it doesn't end up at the exact spot you initiate. But far as camping, the plus side is that it sets you up nearby enough and usually in a particularly perfect and beautiful location. It's like they were made for camping. Twice now I've set up camp near legendary animals and both times I was spawned into heaven. I spent days in each location. Currently logged out camping at the lake near legendary bear, where I caught my first big fish at a whopping 19 lbs and change, it took a while! Far as the bear, it was our second encounter and he bested me again, with a vicious mauling and leaving me for dead after taking definitely one but I think two rifle shots to the head. I may need to abandon these mountains and come back another day with another weapon. Unrelated, have you guys noticed how there are a bunch of one liners from random npc greetings in the first game, but now they're being used in context and given a whole new meaning? I feel like it's a definite wink because they're even spoken the same way, same inflections. They're etched in my head forever from so much red dead so hearing them pop up always perks my ears up. All three. Also also, story choices are reflected in newspapers. Geese, that chapter 1 mission we talked about had an accurate depiction of events, I wonder what yours looked like with the different choice. Something really cool is the newspaper clippings at Arthur's tent at camp, from first bank job. It has a witness account of the thing and I'm playing Arthur as a no witnesses kinda guy.
I really struggled with the choice in that mission and redid it a bunch and drove myself crazy. But when I saw that clipping later, it totally justified it for me. My thinking being, they left witnesses and they talked to the press. Lesson learned.
Now if the paper has more eye witness accounts like of that train mission, that'd be... pretty cool. Oh, and drawing into deadeye is one of the coolest fucking features ever. Can literally duel anyone and it's executed perfectly with the visual/audio cues and the way he draws and shoots from the hip, fanning the hammer. And of course you double tap L1 to fancy reholster for the complete experience. In case anyone doesn't know, you lightly hold R2 and will see circle meter lower right, more it fills the longer you have in deadeye when you eventually fully press R2. And you can choose not to, just hover your hand near weapon then back it off. Lots of cool options to play with in interactions.

YES!! Oh wow I'm going to have a lot of fun with this. NPC: "Uh...is that new fella dragging a dead body into town on horseback?" Me: "BRING OUT YOUR DEAD!" NPC: 😬 Me: 😁 I've found solace up in the Grizzlies, the only territory where I don't have a bounty on my head. But far as camping, the plus side is that it sets you up nearby enough and usually in a particularly perfect and beautiful location. It's like they were made for camping. I like how it puts you in different places, for the most part. Sometimes I'm in the habit of saving in places just so I can be close to other places I plan to go the next time I turn the game on. But walking around this game is a JOY and something I've waited to do for 8 years. I don't mind getting a little extra exercise and greeting some more fellers. All in a day's work. In my day, you had to walk 10 miles to the gunsmithery! Unrelated, have you guys noticed how there are a bunch of one liners from random npc greetings in the first game, but now they're being used in context and given a whole new meaning? Doesn't holding R2 cause you to shoot from the hip (even if your weapon isn't drawn)? So if you haven't drawn your weapon and you hold R2 lightly (I assume this is a pressure sensitive button thing?) you can build up the dead eye meter and then press R2 to draw into dead eye? That's awesome. I'm amazed at all the possible mechanics in this game.

Pressing R2 fully does go into shooting from the hip straight away, but not pressing it fully doesn't draw the weapon, rather builds up deadeye meter, hand inching closer to holster. You can then choose to draw by fully pressing, or let go and go back to normal without having drawn. It's pretty cool.
I love how they've implemented little touches like that, like with horse controls. You have a lot more control over speeds, how you get started, can go right into full gallop, or start trotting, and change speeds more dynamically in between by hard pressing x or double tapping and let go or hold, or hitting x while also holding direction on thumbstick, and all these combinations for precision. I can't get enough horse riding, it looks and feels fantastic.

Very cool. Love that dramatic tension slowly reaching for the holster then deciding to go all in or back out. I love how they've implemented little touches like that, like with horse controls. The horse riding feels so good and I'm still shocked that I was able to jump from my horse onto another person's horse, throwing them off in the process. They were probably even more shocked 😁

I'm loving the fishing minigame. Rode out into the bayou to get all the special lures, now I'm reelin em in like a pro. I still can't wrap my head around the hunting though. I see 3 star animals, I kill them, I get poor pelts. Is it because I'm not tracking them first? I haven't managed to get one perfect pelt yet, and I wanna upgrade the satchel so bad. Also, I'm trying to play as honorable as possible. I haven't robbed anyone outside a story mission, and haven't killed anyone unless they shoot at me first. My honor meter is almost full :D I haven't even had a bounty yet except for that one mission where you bust Micah out of jail in Strawberry. That fucker forced me into a gunfight with the whole damn town and I had to pay off a $300 bounty when all was said and done. I was super pissed but at least he gave me another holster so I can dual wield pistols.
