I feel the WWE 2K games are less bad and more uninspired. Untapped potential. More often than not stuff is taken out just to be put back in as a big new feature in like a year or three. So they come off as little more than a roster update at best, and a neutered experience compared to previous years at worst. The career mode is basically just an endless slog of matches with little context or motivation for doing it, with logic-breaking progression (I have to give up this title to go after this title, but rather than having a match where the objective is to have a good match but lose you just kind of leave the title on a desk somewhere and move on like you never had it) rather than some kind of RNG feud based progression. Honestly, it showcases a basic lack of understanding of how wrestling works. Winning titles is great and all, but nobody gives a crap about a wrestler who wins a title if he's never had any feuds. They should go back to the drawing board on Universe and Career mode and find a way to somehow combine them. Or at least the structure of them. Have it be that the game contains a ton of feuds, with cut scenes and microphone work specific to the storylines. Have certain storylines be title specific, with other stories being #1 contender match based. So you could randomly, based on previous win loss performance get put into a feud with somebody like Seth Rollins where the winner becomes #1 contender, and then next month you go into a World Title storyline with Rusev for example. I actually like Universe Mode. I do have my gripes with it, namely the repetitive nature of scenarios / cut scenes and the limitation on selecting the amount of matches on any given card (can't do more than 7 for Wrestlemania). Honestly though, when I get sick of Universe Mode I only play the game on Exhibition and create the scenarios in my head. I actually like it better that way sometimes, because in Exhibition I can simply do two quick matches on RAW without having to go through the process of setting up entire cards. If the stat tracker / title history from Universe was applied in Exhibition I probably wouldn't even touch Universe. One thing I wish they did was overhaul the character selection screen. I miss the ability to sort wrestlers in specific brands and search them that way. I love the idea of picking the NXT brand from a category, and having just the wrestlers from that brand pop up in the selection.

I more meant actual career mode. Universe mode is fine for what it is, but they could do much more with it. It's basically just "you're too lazy to make matches yourself, so here's some" Half the time it doesn't even follow it's own logic. I've had it, on more than one occasion, have the Royal Rumble winner not even get booked at WrestleMania.

I really think the timeline for a yearly release is what kills the series (and frankly most sports games these days). Pressure to release something with a new feature every year means half ass game modes and bugs that never get fixed.

Absolutely. However WWE will never allow a developer to skip a year to make a truly solid game because people will still buy it based on the brand alone. I actually heard that it's in the developmental contract WWE has with the developer or publisher that they're required to have an annual release.
It was just revealed today that Tower Mode is going to be a new feature in the game. It's basically a concept they ripped directly out of the recent Mortal Kombat games which feature the exact same mode. So this doesn't particularly excite me. All I want to know about is gameplay news. New mechanics? Changes? Updates? I don't care about the fluffy WWE brand nonsense, just make a solid grappling engine so I can see Bret Hart have a five star match against Curt Hennig. Do that and I'll buy your game.

I'm sure this is wishful thinking, but maybe 2K should bring in a 2nd development house, sort of like Activision did with Call of Duty. That way it's still a yearly game, but each developer gets two years to work on their game.

There were rumors that 2K was going to do this when they originally bought the license- use their own in house development in tandem with Yukes to help ease the burden of a yearly release. I actually got excited since 2K did a great job with their football games back in the day, and NBA2k has always been top of the line in terms of both gameplay and presentation (though quality control has been a thing for this title too the past couple years). It never happened, and it seems they're fine just owning the license and letting Yukes do their thing. Its a bummer.

The rumors I remember were all misinformed versions of the fact that they were going to have VisualConcepts handle the wrestler scans, which they did.

I'm militant pro-Fire Pro, but their editing suite is pretty good.
I did 2k edits for 2 years while Fire Pro R was dying its slow death, I thought my project in Returns was done, little did I know so much more was still out there to be put in the Anthology... and that a new game would come out. Eventually, I left the 2K scene for the MLB The Show scene and I thought I'd be there for the rest of my editing life.
I do miss the ease of adding new materials to edits. I was very proud of the Anthology on 2k. It was quality work: the stats were balanced, the movesets were well-researched and slotted, and I really worked hard on the appearances. I remember my Muta, my Fujinami robe (before he was in the game, he came later that year), my Inoki robe, my Onita jacket, my Jumbo jacket, my Tenryu REVOLUTION jacket etc... even something like... was it Shoji Nakamaki's shirt? All I had to do was draw it in GIMP, import it in and boom.
I can't make new stuff like that in World, it's just too much work and I'm old and lazy.
Graphically, they are kicking our asses in ways. Of course they are.
But the game doesn't have as much depth under the hood. It's made to be played by kids and casual gamers. Fire Pro is more complex. It was a turn-off for me. I like the depth of Fire Pro, all the nuances. But there's a place for the arcadey gameplay too.
Their license has gotten better because WWE and 2K both threw a ton of money on their rosters.
I HATED THE UPLOAD LIMITS. Is it still like that? Was it what, 20 CAWS per account with unlockable tiers? I fully unlocked like 3-4 accounts!!

I'm going take some heat for this...
Fire Pro's game play is 100% more "arcadey" than anything WWE2K is putting out these days. That doesn't make it better or worse, but the "arcade" style game play critique of the WWE games is 100% invalid a this point.

If you get two people to play and work a match, the 2K games will obviously look and flow better. The animations and the number of moves are better. But 2K AI is horrible. Every guy wrestles the same, getting them to finish at the right time is a crap shoot, and they seem to constantly go for the OMG moments and never use finishers. Throw on top the constant gameplay bugs like not being able to climb the turnbuckles and the 1 count issue- maybe its not arcadey, but its also not realistic.

I didn't find the latest entry to have flawed logic. Heels behaved like heels and faces behaved like faces (for the most part) with the implimentation of Personality Traits giving each wrestler a wide array of specific abilities unique to their character, and their attributes are balanced accordingly. You can even manually set the AI with sliders now which gives you the option to make the game much more challenging / more realistically paced. I'm not sure about simming, though. I always play these games 100% of the time.
