While technically better this past weekend burned through a lot of goodwill at light-speed.
Between a "you're late" call that was wrong and some other stuff it was obvious this person isn't paying attention to a damn thing. I'm sure everything our boss left them Friday probably got thrown into the garbage. And really, given their track record? Especially when 9/10 times it means I have to cover for them?
The other two had some weird passive-aggressive vibe. And it was really like "fine, don't need you either."

Yesterday was kind of rough.
The first was I'm not sure if an intentional slip or lack of care but it put me in full on "don't do that. don't give me hope." Later that night the phone rings and oh look, a new convenient excuse. And of course I can cover. Even if it is shit luck at a bad time they have cried wolf so often I don't think any of us care about the whys or hows anymore.
The second, it's mostly disappointment. Ice queen knew she had to switch shifts with her work bestie but apparently showed up less than refreshed. Some jokes were made that I didn't like even though she has brought heat on herself lately. Under different circumstances I would have brought snacks, cheer her up, or even just "I could hold you like this forever but it's time to get ready."

I was hoping to hear some updates yesterday but most of it was of a different kind. Did not help that somebody started sending out messages before things were finalized thus making it sound like we were closing instead of closing earlier.
More immediately we're hoping a teammate isn't having to start planning for a funeral. G covered last night but it will be my shot tonight. As it is I'm going to be serious about it which is probably going to ruin the fun of the DGAF squad.

The setup could use some tweaks and there's some communication issues but even "fixing" those would probably mean they just spend more time goofing off.
As it is, I guess I have a "don't fuck with me" when the jacket is on as even a couple randoms were suddenly more welcome to talk etc. And another that was more what we should be doing, but eh, it's not like they could be bothered to do that when I'm at my regular station.

Not sure what was going on yesterday but since it didn't seem to be an emergency I didn't jump at it. G seemed a bit more eager but ultimately didn't according to the message I got last night.
Mr. Mercurial was trying to be vague about why but I really need more concrete details. Heard a couple other things that would seem like a questionable idea now. I could see this particular person being stubborn about it but getting a "careful what you wish for" if they say "didn't work, you're being reassigned/cut now lol"

Nothing on that front. I am hoping this is the thing that will set her straight but I don't have much reason to think things will change.
As it is there were a couple closed door meetings that raised eyebrows. They might even be about the same person.

Now that Covid is ramping up in our area again (multiple schools now closed due to infection) the plant is making all employees wear face masks at all times. Problem is we also have to wear safety glasses in the plant at all times, which means every breath you take fogs up your lenses and makes it impossible to see.
Now in my shop we have to make a lot of precision joints and it's utterly impossible to do it with both mask and safety glasses on. When I'm making joints I have to pull the mask down.
We had four people sent home for refusing to wear the mask and glasses at the same time and one of our retiree contractors quit on the spot.
Our shop's head technician is currently out since he had a heart attack a couple weeks ago and his replacement mentioned halfway through the shift that he had potentially been exposed to covid at a funeral. First he was bitched out, then sent home, because the current policy is if you even think you're exposed you stay home for two weeks and he came in to work anyway. So one of the guys on the machine he was working on got his stuff and said he was going home and no one is sure if he is coming back.
December 14th is when they are supposed to let us know if things are going to get better or worse. The company wants us working through Christmas to make up for the reduced hours we had last spring but if covid continues to spread locally they may put us back on covid hours. Personally I wouldn't mind going back on the old covid schedule we were on last spring. Would definitely make things in the winter easier.

Aside from another closed door meeting that raised some eyebrows pretty much nothing new on either situation. Well supposedly one might have a definite answer tomorrow. Boss did have some sly hints about how there would be several candidates if a position became open but I can see only one potential "rival."
That said something else popped up. Last year both myself and my best friend were mentioned for the sort of split role Mr. Mercurial has currently. I guess he was asked again recently and with another kid on the way I guess he has more reason. Back then he was seriously considering another spot; not sure how he would have handled the ongoing situation there vs. the current boss.

Cue "and now I know why." A certain annoying person is going to be unavailable for a while. Mr. Mercurial has already been recommended to cover, but that in turn means others (but mostly me) have to fill in that spot. And perhaps the timing of some other things that still seem to be in play line up it could be a very interesting new year. Of course if other things had gone the way they probably should have last year... ...yeah, I'm still sore about that.

For a few minutes it seemed like karma had smacked all my least favorite people but one showed up late and the other seemed to be back if maybe knocked down a peg or two.
The former had to do their dramatic "I don't know how to tell you this but I'm considering a transfer" I tried to not act surprised and there was one detail I didn't know. See, I thought this was a sort of mutual benefit "our counterpart needs somebody; it would be less travel for you" But no, apparently they have something else in mind. I keep looking at the (public) listings and nothing really makes sense. But it's not my call.

When I was in Security, I was a Site Supervisor for Physical Security at an Amazon location.
One Memorial Day weekend, the company took all their guards with a FL Class G license and used them to cover some hip hop festival.
I had to work 4 12 hour shifts from 7pm-7am...then Monday morning...the supervisor relieving me called me as I was coming out of the elevator at my building to say her mom had to be rushed to hospital...so I had to go back and cover.
I wasn't tired, I was so livid my anger was fuel.
The jackass who was the area supervisor (who only called me to yell at me and threaten me), said "we'll try to find someone, but you'll have just have to stay until we do."
I ended up going home at around 7:30 that night. So I worked 24 hours in a row at a job that didn't call for it, all because of piss poor upper management.
I knew then I had to get out.
When I was accepted to do a Paralegal program, I sent them a letter on a Sunday afternoon asking to be demoted so I could go back to school.
I work 8 hours on Monday and jackass told me to go to the office after my shift. That was cutting into my time. I wait in the doofus' office for 2 hours! Then the Operations guys came in with a big smile and said Amazon were willing to up my pay from $14 to $19 per hour. They advised me to take it.
I wanted to flip out on them there...but I kept my cool. I told I'd think about it. In my mind I thought "MMM, NO!"
So I went to school, trained as a paralegal, got a job that had nothing to do with paralegal but got out of security.
Then that company that had hired me in 2016, promoted me to a manger in 2018, out the blue dropped me yesterday like a bag of moldy tangerines (Stanley Spadowski for those who get it)...
So after 4 and a 1/2 years with a company I am unemployed. One week after Thanksgiving and 3 weeks before Christmas.
Class act.

You have my sympathies, here's hoping you can get a better job where you get treated with some real respect going forward. Thanks mate, I did get my Letter of Eligibility with the FL DOE to be a teacher. I haven't been able to be hired by a Public school, but now I am broadening to apply to Charter Schools. Also, as I received my US Citizenship in Jan, I already filed for unemployment benefits. My wife, who has been a teacher for some 14 years is also speaking to the substitute locator at her school to see what's needed to be a sub.
So while the timing sucks, I was building up an exit plan since last March. |
