Taunts:
Another new gameplay mechanic that was introduced in Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special is the ability to perform taunts during a match. Simply pressing the shoulder buttons L + R simultaneously will activate a Wrestler's taunt. Besides the performance aspect, performing a taunt can apparently heal a Wrestler's energy - making the mechanic a very useful tool during matches! Some of my favourite taunts in Special are: Ted DiBiase throwing stacks of cash in the air. Tiger Jeet Singh placing his sabre between his teeth. Undertaker kneeling down. Earthquake stomping around the ring (this taunt is actually part of Earthquake's finisher - which is activated by pressing Y + B at the head of a downed opponent) Abdullah The Butcher's karate pose. Dusty Rhodes shaking his booty. Ric Flair cowering in fear. Bruiser Brody's trademark "HUSS! HUSS! HUSS!" bark (which also includes the only voice clip in game, if I recall). Hulk Hogan cupping his ears. Great Muta looking both ways before spraying poison mist. And the Steiner's mount taunt.

Thirteen years:I'm still working away at finding out just how many wins Special can record in a player's profile. I've just passed 5000 wins. If you were to play one game of Special every day for a year, it would take you a little over 13 years to reach 5000 wins. Like many Fire Pro games, Special truly is a game that could be played for decades. Mind blowing stuff, really.

I have yet to translate the X Premium guide I do have (it's on my list of guides to scan). I also discovered that causing certain Wrestlers to bleed in Special apparently boosts their stats. I think this special skill is reserved for hardcore Wrestlers. Usually, the sight of blood reduces the speed in which a Wrestler recovers after sustaining damage. In World, this gameplay feature is still prevalent as players can adjust the recovery time for created Wrestlers after they start bleeding, too.

Yes, there was indeed two versions of the game. The second tweaked the CPU's behaviour considerably and was released, if not mistaken, about a month later from the original version. In 1.1 the CPU seems to be a bit more aggressive. He goes out of the ring all the time, in 1.0 he rarely left the ring. I don't know if this is a good change, they could add a little chance to stay in the ring. The main fix is turnbuckle jumping. In 1.0, the CPU was constantly climbing and descending. It's amazing that they missed such a bug with logic. In 1.1 this was fixed but still something is wrong. The CPU sometimes still goes down from the corner at the moment the opponent gets up. The logic of the jump is somehow unfinished, the wrestler sometimes does stupid things. The CPU could use turnbuckle a lot more often. The jump distance is short because the ring is too big. This has been fixed in X, but a new issue has been added, wrestlers constantly falling out of the ring. CPU also uses taunting, but rarely, usually happens towards the end of the match.

27 years:
In my quest to find out just how many wins Special can hold in a player's Fight Records profile, I've since reached 10,000+ wins. The interesting part? The counter is still going!
If you were to play one match a day, it would take you about 27 years to get 10,000 wins in Special! My next goal? Seeing if Special can reach up to 100,000 wins.

How long did it take you to spend 10,000 fights? About three months on and off. - 30x game speed. - Controlling both 1P and 2P. - Make 2P use Cobra Claw. - Ref disqualifies 2P for using Cobra Claw. - Match ends in 5 - 7 seconds. - Repeat. I tried hacking the game in SNES9x and ZSNES, but even after finding the proper address and attempting to change the value of my win count, I just can't seem to alter anything. It's almost like Special just doesn't want to be hacked. It's become self-aware.

Interesting, there are cheat engine and artmoney programs, maybe it's worth hacking through them?

Interesting, there are cheat engine and artmoney programs, maybe it's worth hacking through them? Never used Artmoney or any other cheat engines to speak of. May have to look into using them. I've since begun tackling this problem from a different perspective : racking up my loss record, too.
The simming scene started with Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special!According to Japanese game book "Pro-Wrestling Super Game Retsuden" (2001, Sony Magazines) Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special was lauded for it's inclusion of fictional Wrestling promotions (in which the game's roster was organized into for the first time ever) as well as the CPU's level of logic. While Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special wasn't the first Fire Pro to have CPU vs CPU simmed matches (that accolade goes to 1992's Super Fire Pro-Wrestling 2 which came out two years prior), Retsuden added that Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special was the first game in the series where players " got into the swing of watching matches" in Japan. As a previous point here mentioned, Special had it's own dedicated online forum called FBATTL (Fire Pro Battle). One of the topics in the forum was an official thread dedicated to showcasing CAW's. Players would submit their CAW's for "heated battles" online. Furthermore, several guides of the time included formula sheets for players to write out and share their edits across the internet. More than likely, this is probably the first time where simmed matches (especially with created Wrestlers containing CPU logic) were graded by other players. A tradition that continues to this day 28 years later!

Update: I have since reached 10k wins & losses. As you can see, the screen is getting pretty crowded. Suffice to say, I think the maximum number of wins/losses is just under one hundred-thousand. The below screen reads: 10635 wins. 10002 losses. Rank S100.
Just to see if the numbers move over with a larger name, I created a second player account using four characters (the max number). So, folks. It looks like we found the ultimate challenge in the older Fire Pro games. See if you can reach 100k wins or losses.

Colour change trick in Edit mode:
For years, I thought it was impossible to properly change a Wrestler's skin colour in Special's Edit mode. Pressing left or right on the "body" section would just end up with freakishly weird colour changing results. Well, after reading through Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special's "Edit Wrestler Book", I discovered that there is, in fact, an actual way to change a Wrestler's skin tone.
For this example, I'm going to use template #120 (Willie Williams). Select the thigh portion (second-last option) and change the colour of the thighs to whatever colour you want. After you have changed the colour of the Wrestler's thighs, adjust the Wrestler's size (third option). Once the size is adjusted, the skin tone of the Wrestler will also change! Different pants designs will even change the Wrestler's hair colour! Here's a few colour changes with Hulk Hogan: Suddenly, the process of creating your own fictional Wrestler just became a whole lot easier in Special!

Hey, great new discoveries. Thanks. Promo poster, sold in some japanese auction. Marketing did not stint on informing that the game uses 32mb. In 1994, this size just started to appear, one of the first was Super Street Fighter II. At the end of the year there were a few more games with 32mb, we can remember Donkey Kong.

In 1994, this size just started to appear, one of the first was Super Street Fighter II. At the end of the year there were a few more games with 32mb, we can remember Donkey Kong. Excellent discovery, Kiano! In today's money with inflation, the cost of Special in USD would be worth over $150. There's also mention of the Turbo File accessories which acted as a memory card of sorts for the Super Famicom. Just like Final Bout, fans were able to use the accessory to store their created Wrestlers, fight records and tournament progress. Then bring over their turbo accessory to a friend's place. I'm not sure if two Turbo files could be used simultaneously, but the Turbo File was basically a data backup in the simplest sense. The most interesting mention would have to be the Wrestling books also included. From the small preview of the second magazine, I was able to spot Nobuhiko Takada (who was a big name at the time with UWFI), Great Muta (who would go on to have a high profile match against Takada the following year), Mitsuharu Misawa, Atsushi Onita (who would stage his second retirement the following year) and Akira Maeda. The artist behind the book's cover created lots of artwork for New Japan Pro-Wrestling throughout the early 90's - early 2000's. In other news, I've just reached 20,000+ wins in Special. The counter is still going.

In the past, I accidentally discovered that it takes about 200 wins to unlock the HIDE Wrestlers without completing Champion Road mode. Since then, I've been curious to see if it's also possible to unlock the Wrestlers from Special's other hidden promotion ( KAKU) along with the Gruesome Fighting mode/octagon ring. The first three rows read "FALL, GIVEUP" and "KO".
Seeing as the magic number was 200 wins, I tried getting creative by achieving: - 202 pinfalls - 205 submissions - and 301 Criticals/KO's. Unfortunately, no luck. It looks like the only way to get the rest of the game's content is to play through Champion Road. Just like Special originally intended.
