Fire Pro Wrestling Returns is a game that needs no introduction. 17 years later, fans are still making brand-new edits and simming matches in this budget classic. In Returns' manual, there are pictures of famous masked men (not including me, mind you): The first masked man is The Destroyer. The other two Luchadores are a bit harder to decipher. Rey Mysterio Jr. and Fishman?

At the moment, I am in the process of scanning the super-rare 188 page Fire Pro Wrestling Encyclopedia (1994) by Keibunsha. Like Keibunsha's other Fire Pro retrospective ' Fire Pro Wrestling Retsuden' (1992), different parts of the guidebook feature actual photographs of real-life Wrestlers. On page 45, the first Wrestler is none other than Big Van Vader, as he first appeared in Japan under his original mask. The Fire Pro-Wrestling Encyclopedia also contains more Wrestler illustrations - which, I'm still scanning. These are some of the last illustrations that were ever included in a Fire Pro guidebook. As the roster for subsequent games grew bigger and bigger, I'm sure the cost of hiring a graphic artist became too expensive. Could you imagine 160+ pages dedicated to just Wrestler illustrations in followup guides? Me neither.

New character updates from 80's Mania Wrestling Returns & Modern Mania Wrestling GM: Bryson Darling is based off of Daniel Bryans. Marvelo is based on Montez Ford; while Marvelo's alter-ego's Marvelous V & Mister Marvelo have been influenced by Swerve Strickland and Floyd Mayweather. At first glance, Abe Buckingham looks like a reference to Logan Paul, but Abe is based on Will Osprey. Human Highlight Reel is said to be based off of Jungle Boy. with splashes of RVD and Joey Janella. Reel alter-ego's is also known as Kongo Kid; furthering the Jungle Boy association. Part of the May update: Overboard is based on Tugboat, while Board's alter-ego Overcast is also based on Typhoon. Let's not forget the Popeye attire.

According to a 1993 interview with Goichi Suda and HUMAN's Public Relations officer Kazuyuki Kumagai, legendary Luchador El Canek was originally considered to be included as a playable character for Super Fire Pro-Wrestling III Final Bout. The duo stated Canek was dropped early in Final Bout's development, citing that the team didn't think teenage fans of the series would be aware of Canek's success in Japan from years prior. In Canek's place, Kenta Kobashi was added to the Final Bout roster instead. El Canek would finally be added to the followup title Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special as a bonus Wrestler template in Special's edit mode. Canek's Fire Pro rename would be 'El Canarik'. According to Suda, the two Wrestlers that were missing from Final Bout (Giant Baba and Abdullah The Butcher) were due to time restraints; two omissions that Suda wanted to include into the roster. Needless to say, both Baba and Butcher would be added once again to a Fire Pro roster with the release of Special a year later (as unlockable Wrestlers).

No disrespect to El Canek, but choosing Kenta Kobashi over him was probably the smartest move

No disrespect to El Canek, but choosing Kenta Kobashi over him was probably the smartest move I gotta agree. Kobashi was the final pillar added to the roster; one that, despite being a tag team champion that same year, was pretty much booked as an underdog up to that point; going on a strategically-placed losing streak beforehand. Even at Canek's peak in Japan during the 1980's, Mil Mascaras' popularity still overshadowed him it seemed. Thanks to our friend Kiano, who spotted Hulk Hogan in this Japanese gaming magazine issue promoting an early look at Fire Pro-Wrestling 3 Legend Bout on the PC Engine from 1992:

All 189 pages of the Fire Pro-Wrestling Encyclopedia have been scanned and posted.
Of course, there's tons of very rare Wrestler illustrations to be found within. The guide even includes a comic dedicated to Mitsuharu Misawa's rise to stardom in All Japan Pro-Wrestling. Of course, all of the Wrestlers featured within

Our good friend and fellow Fire Pro archivist Kiano just provided scans of a Japanese gaming magazine called Gekkan PC. From the April 1989 issue, Gekkan covered the original Fire Pro title Combination Tag. The issue features illustrations of Victory Musashi (Antonio Inoki) applying an Octopus Hold to Iron Blaster (Road Warrior Animal), while page 8 includes an illustration of Star Bison (Stan Hansen) going for his Western Lariat against a generic Robot character (was this the mascot for the Gekken magazine?). If you look closely in the background, you may also notice B.G. Bull (Bruiser Brody) as Hansen's tag partner. The phrase 'Dogaan' is not to be confused with Duggan - the Fire Pro rename of Ax Duggan (Hulk Hogan), who would appear in the followup Fire Pro sequel: 2nd Bout. Illustrations of Stan Hansen and The Destroyer (who wouldn't appear in a Fire Pro title for another 3 years).

Famous Pro-Wrestlers in a cutesy, Parodius-style cute 'em up? No, we're not talking about Abdullah the Butcher's appearance in obscure PC Engine shooter Hana Taaka Daka! Today's Pro-Wrestling discovery is none other than: GOD PANIC SHIJO SAIKYO NO GUNDAM An original article for God Panic from a 1992 issue of Gekkan magazine. Get too close to these Giant Baba/Antonio Inoki enemies, and they'll extend their boots to kick you. Much the same as Giant Baba's signature Big Boot (16mon Kick as it's known in Japan). In stage 5, the player encounters look-alikes of Stan Hansen, Giant Baba/Inoki & a pre-heel turn Hulk Hogan! The names of the standard enemies appear in the credits as 'Fron Hansen' (Stan Hansen),
Hank Hogan (Hulk Hogan) &
Giantonio Inoba (Giant Baba & Antonio Inoki).
This giant Tiger-esque boss is a recurring character as well. He wears a 'W' championship belt and has a gold and purple variant. Furthermore, the boss appears at the end of stage 5 along with the other Wrestlers. I believe this boss was based on Tiger Mask & Tiger's alter-ego Super Tiger from the UWF. There's even a tribute to Michael Jackson in the form of a moon-walking moon enemy! Gekkan's game coverage and illustrations for the release of Fire Pro-Wrestling 2nd Bout on the PC Engine. This article is from 1991: The illustrations feature the Wrestlers Knack Masakatsu (Masakatsu Funaki), Blade Musha (Great Muta), Atomic Blaster (The Ultimate Warrior & Star Bison (Stan Hansen). Special thanks once again to Kiano for finding these scans.
