(Real life comment: I work 8-5 M-F, try to exercise, am trying to become a teacher and have a volunteer ministry where I have YouTube videos and a weekly Zoom meeting. I tried to do a couple of journals but failed because the time wasn't there. This is an attempt to do a journal I can stick with that won't be too time consuming.)

The Introduction
The camera shows an office, one that would make the most jaded hack writing cheap pulp fiction wince. The office was dimly lit, but one could see displays showing various weapons from China such as a 3 Section Staff, Qiang, Dao and Twin Hook Swords. Japanese weapons could be seen such as the katana, naginata and kusarigama. Also part of the decor were Ottoman Scimitars and various European swords from a Claymore to a Rapier.
Behind a large mahogany desk sat a man wearing a gray suit. He had salt and pepper hair and a small scar on his cheek. On his desk was a laptop, a legal pad and a small bonzai tree.
"Greetings, I am The Director."
"I am here before you because I love war. We are here as a species because we love war. While one would think that war and violence would lead to our demise, the opposite is true."
"War brings out our spirit, our passion and in the face of war do we throw everything into one goal: conquest."
"Combat is primal, it's life or death. It's the struggle that pushes us to grow, become stronger, become wiser and to push past comfort to the very limits of our potential."
"I am here before you because the Gruesome Fighting Championship is bringing a new era of combat."
"There will be no judges, no 10 point scoring system, no holds will be barred."
"Sponsors have been lined up, venues secured and fighters paid."
"Combat is glorious...and it will be Gruesome."

The Lottery
The Director smiled as he just finished his introduction. He turned to his laptop, pressed a couple of keys and began writing on his legal pad.
"GFC will begin on June 20th, we will have a double header. There will be an afternoon event and an evening event. Both events will take place from the GFC Dojo here at my tower. Not to fear though, soon the fans will have their chance to see Gruesome Fighting in person. The double header will be qualification matches to enter the tournament to decide the Million Dollar Grand Prix Universal martial Arts Crown. The tournament will be held on June 27th from the Big Garden Arena in San Francisco."
"The tournament will be held inside the Dodecagon."
"In order to keep things fair, the qualification matches will be determined via lottery. Using an algorithm, the draw will be made randomly."
The Director closed the laptop, centered the pad in front of him and folded his hands as he looked into the camera with only slight glances at the pad as he read.
"Why would I use pen and paper when I have a laptop? I have a fondness for some of the old ways. Now, before I read the pairings, I first want to state that all matches will consist of 5 Rounds, 5 Minutes per Round with a 5 knockdown TKO rule. All attacks are legal. If a fight ends at the end of 5 rounds, it is a draw. The top 8 winners with the fastest time will advance."
"For GFC 1, the Preliminary fight will be Judo Jim Brown versus Master Ken."
"The Low Card fight will see Joker 08 versus Hans Visser."
"The Mid-Card fight will see The Spock versus Yuri Guryev."
"The High Card fight will feature Bork Laser vs Steel 78."
"The Main Event will be Ty Kwon Do versus Cesar Belfonta."
"GFC 2, which will be held on the same day, consists of the following fights."
"The Preliminary fight will see W.C. Burns versus Goro Fujimoto."
"The Low Card will feature Kodiak Josh versus Koji Yamasuka."
"The Mid-Card will see The Mighty Heracles versus Bimbo Spice."
"In the High Card, REX will take on B.B Badedge."
"Finally, the Main Event will see Batman 66 versus Zarian Kolpakov."
The Director leaned forward as he stared straight into the camera.
"I do not play favorites. I do not pick winners and losers. The best fighters will qualify and the best fighter will leave the Dodecagon as the champion."
"Get ready, Gruesome Fighting is coming."
The Director leaned back as the camera faded to black.

Reactions, Part 1: Team Goro
The view is of a small dojo in Tokyo, Japan. There is a ring in the center. In each corner rests a different tool. One corner has a three sided fence, a second corner features a heavy bag, a third corner has a speed bag and the fourth corner has some weight equipment. In the ring stands Goro Fujimoto. He is wearing shin guards, a rash guard, bike shorts and is wearing heavy gloves. He is not alone in the ring, he is joined by a man holding kick pads. Goro drills the pad with low, medium and high kicks. The dojo reverberates with the thud of the impact of each kick. A third man outside the ring yells in Japanese and blows a whistle. Goro removes the gloves, bows to the man holding the pads and heads to the area with the fence. He sits and is joined by the man with the whistle.
Man: "Well Goro, you have done a lot in your career, and now you are rising to face a new challenge."
Goro: "Yes Daijiro, I have joined Gruesome Fighting. From what I have been told, it will not be MMA, but actual 'no holds barred' fighting. I look forward to the challenge."
Daijiro: "The Director's Assistant e-mailed a video. The lottery has been chosen."
Goro: "Oh?"
Daijiro: "You will be fighting W.C. Burns."
Goro's brow furrows.
Goro: "Burns? Is he representing catch wrestling?"
Daijiro: "No. That's where it's interesting, Burns is claiming to represent Wing Chun."
Goro smiles derisively.
Goro: "I thought he wanted to represent Catch wrestling and remind people of the greatness of Gotch and Klauser. Now he is claiming Wing Chun, will he now fight in memory of Ip Man? How fickle. It doesn't matter what style he brings. He can use Wing Chun or Catch wrestling, the result will the same. MMA is the future. Even though it is not as mainstream after the fall of PRIDE, MMA is still the strongest style of fighting. I will defeat him. When do we fight?"
Daijiro: "You will meet Burns in the opening fight of the even event on June 20th. I don't like it, jet lag will be an issue."
Goro: "Hmmm. No it will not. When do I leave?"
Daijiro: "When the Assistant e-mailed the video, your tickets were included in the attachment. I already sent it to you, check your phone. The flight leaves in the morning."
Goro: "Very good. Tell Funaki I am ready to spar."
Daijiro: "You just don't stop."
Goro: "That's how I will become champion."
The view ends with Goro and Funaki on the mat in a fenced in area resembling a cage. Goro shoots in with a fast double leg, lifts Funaki up and slams him.

Reactions Part 2: Burns
The view is of a simplistic kwoon, or training hall. There is a small table on which rests a book covered by a cloth. On the wall above the book are pictures of Ip Man, Bruce Lee, and Donnie Yen. A mu ren zhuang, or wooden practice dummy is off the to the side. A few feet away from the dummy rests a sandbag. Hung on a rack are butterfly swords and rattan rings of varying sizes. On the floor rests a small bag. Burns stands in the middle of kwoon, positioned is an "A" stance, his hands moving slowly as he practices Sim Nam Tao, the 1st form of Wing Chun.
His movement is disrupted by a ringing phone. He stops his motion and heads over to the bag. He pulls out his phone and answers, placing the phone on speaker. He lays the phone down and resumes his slow, methodical movement.
Burns: "Hello?"
...: "Hey, it's me, it's me, it's EJB!"
It was EJB, or the Electric Joy Boy. He was a pro wrestler that Burns had known for years. What people didn't know was that behind the scenes, they were longtime friends, but not afraid to ruffle each other's feathers. EJB and Burns never crossed paths much in the ring after their early days as EJB went down the route of garbage wrestling and Burns favored catch. Even when they worked in the same promotion, EJB always went after the danger of death-match wrestling. Burns never understood how EJB's wife dealt with it. It was a weird sight to see EJB with a bodybuilder physique, wrestling a power-brawler style, and have his muscular body hosts a series of scars brought on by barbed wire and other instruments of destruction.
Burns: "What's up? How are things in Ottawa?"
EJB: "Not much, and not bad. I'm flying back down South to Atlanta and the circuit for more tapings. How about you? Did that martial arts thing take off yet?"
Burns: "It's about to. The first installment was filmed in The Director's office. I'm fighting Goro next week."
EJB: "Crap. Isn't he a MMA freak?"
Burns: "Yeah, should be a good test of my new skills though."
EJB: "What new skills?"
Burns: "I haven't told anyone, but I've secretly been training Wing Chun."
EJB: "Man, I don't get you. When we started, you did hardcore wrestling with me, and you wussed out. Then you learn a bit of BJJ with your cardio kickboxing classes you took at the mall then you market youself as 'Mr. MMA.' Then you disappear and come back going on this big deal about catch wrestling, go down to Tampa, think you're gonna be the next Billy Robinson, or Inoki or whatever...and now you're gonna be the Bruce Lee? Come on man! Get real!"
Burns: "I'm going into this doing my style. I'm gonna fight my fight and Goro's gonna lose. If you get a chance, watch me."
EJB: "Aight man. Bye."
Burns: "Bye."
Burns reaches down, picks up the phone, turns it off and heads the sand bag. He takes a deep breath, relaxes and begins chain punching.

The Meeting:
Friday, June 19th, GFC HQ. The doors opened, and the fighters walked in single file into the GFC Dojo led by The Assistant. Everyone was immediately impressed by the modern facilities. In the center was the ring. In the ring stood The Director, next to him stood Hayato. The fighters lined up outside the ring facing him.
Director: "Glad to see everyone arrived safely. I am looking forward to our opening event. I am sure it will be the first of many. This meeting is to set some rules. Some of you will be opponents tomorrow, but you will fight each other at some point. There is no team combat in GFC. However, that doesn't mean I will support underhanded tactics. There is to be absolutely no fighting in any area except this ring. Fight each other with cunning and brutality in the ring. Treat each other as nobles outside it."
"You may be wondering why you didn't have seconds come with you. In order to keep the combat as raw and as fair as possible, I do not want any corners trying to use any tricks. I have teams that will be in your corners between rounds. None of us have any partiality. I am not picking a winner, there is no 'booker' here. In this facility we have corner staff and medical staff."
"Those of you that lose on Saturday night will be leaving on Monday morning, provided you don't require hospitalization. Those that win will move on to the tournament next week. You will stay here during the week and have free use of any facility. We will travel to San Francisco as a unit. I turn things over to Hayato who will go over the rules of fighting."
Hayato nodded to The Director and stepped forward. His was a large man and looked like he could take care of business.
Hayato: "The rules are minimal. Do not intentionally maim or break bones. Do not kill your opponent. When I say 'Fight' you fight. When I say 'Stop' you stop. Non-lethal weapons are allowed. Dress styles are to your discretion. Pretty much everything else is allowed."
A man wearing a red gi raised his hand.
Hayato: "I wasn't expecting questions. Go ahead."
"Master Ken here. Does that mean stomping the groin is allowed?"
Hayato: "What did I just say?"
Ken: "Do not maim, break bones or intentionally kill."
Hayato: "..."
Ken: "Oss."
The Director: "You will be shown your quarters. After that you are free to roam, train, eat, entertain yourselves...but make sure that tomorrow night, you are ready to fight."
