Be honest, y'all knew it was coming
Anyhow, I figure that it would be more prudent to just make a general sports thread for the time being and maybe branch out into new, more specific threads if or when the need arises. That's just my opinion though.
Leading off the discussion......
The San Antonio Spurs have agreed to send Danny Green disgruntled superstar Kawhi Leonard to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Jakob Poetl, "All-Star" guard Demar DeRozan, and a protected 1st round pick in next year's NBA draft.
It's an interesting move since Kawhi obviously wanted no more part of the Spurs but DeRozan (who most everyone agree is well overpaid) didn't want to get traded. Kawhi is certainly a much better player than DeRozan so it's a win for Toronto in that regard. However, he's in the last year of his contract and has been widely rumored to want to play for his hometown Los Angeles Lakers next season. Meanwhile, the streaky DeRozan still had 3 years (and $80+ million) remaining on his contract. I'm not sure that DeRozan in San Antonio will be a good thing, especially when evaluating his contract versus his production but the Spurs can at least now focus on their upcoming season instead of entertaining questions and rumors about the Leonard dilemma every day. Not sure a one year rental will be worth it for Toronto but Kawhi IS a top 5 player and he WILL make them a stronger contender to finally win the Eastern Conference (presuming that he accepts his fate there for the year and doesn't blow the team off).

i dont know anything about basketball, but i did lose a bit of money on the finals since i thought there was no way the nba would leave all that money on the table and let them sweep.
i can't wait for football season though. my favorite.
also, i love brock going back to ufc.

With word that Kawhi has no desire to play for Toronto, this seems more like a definite plan for San Antonio to just drop off a clearly disgruntled player.
Meanwhile, I'm going to start training for rugby season again and my local team, after missing out for over a year and a half. I'm really excited about this weekend's Rugby Sevens World Cup, too.

Liverpool hasn't had a bad transfer window. Getting Keita, Fabinho, Shaqiri all was great. Pulling Alisson Becker in for goalkeeper should be a massive upgrade in a position that the team has needed help in for many years. I'm thrilled.

I'm not saying it's our year, but it's getting there slowly. Maybe next year. Even though he has a girls name Alisson was needed, Karius has been hit and miss in pre-season so far.

Thunder send Carmelo to Atlanta along with a first round pick in 2022 in a salary dump. As for Kawhi, I can't see him playing in Toronto. If he doesn't want to be there, he won't make any effort to play. But that's my opinion. edit: I take that back. If he wants a huge payday after 2019, he'll play ball. Yeah, for whatever silly reason (sabotage by the Spurs and the media imo), Kawhi's character has taken a pretty huge hit in the past 8 months or so but I've never taken him as the kind to quit on his team or put in half-effort. The team expected him to play through TWO serious injuries and he said to hell with that. Nothing "soft" or "wrong" about looking out for your own health when the ones who pay you obviously don't give a damn. It's just really funny how he went from a quiet, unassuming superstar who everyone loved and/or highly respected to some sort of "team cancer," all without really having said a word to the media one way or another. It's utterly vile that they have that power. I never expect Kawhi to lay down on a team he's on. He made it into the league because he was a 100% hustle type player coming out of college (something that's increasingly rare these days) and he's only gotten better as the years have gone on. Unless this ordeal over the past season utterly "broke" his spirit, I expect him to be the same two-way ace that he's always been. It's certainly a possibility (as I mentioned in the first post) but I just don't see it.
As for Carmelo, I have a feeling that he's going to be unhappy on the free agent market as there's just not a place for non-running, non-defending, shooting specialist in a starting rotation in today's NBA. He's going to have to take less money than he's made before and will likely have to embrace being a 6th man. If his pride doesn't allow for either of those things then quite frankly, he should retire. Carmelo can still score but that's literally all that he can d while the NBA talent pool is full of guys who bring scoring and at least one other key asset (passing, defending, rebounding, screening, etc). With the league-wide emphasis on scoring in transition, half-court-only scorers like Carmelo are a dying breed.

^yeah, that's really sudden and and of nowhere
Kind of hard to segue into something positive after that but I am glad that after 98 games, the Royals have completed their first series sweep on the season. With 68 losses with a week left in July, the season is effectively over as far as playing for advancement goes. However, a strong finish to the season could provide a glimmer of hope for the franchise going forward, especially as we start to see more developing players make their debuts/return to the MLB team come late-August/early September. It's been about 7 years since we've had anything close to a season this bad but "going down fighting" would be an admirable salvation to this year's blighted campaign.

It'll be interesting to see what becomes of the Royals going forward. I recall thinking to myself in 2015 "holy shit, I've never seen a team commit to winning today at the extreme expense of their future like this" and now here we are, with the Royals dead last in the most abysmal league in baseball. Frankly, their farm system still looks pretty thin and grim to me; I'd expect several more seasons in the cellar as it stands right now, to be honest.
