Data reveals the 21 most hated bands of all timeUnsurprisingly, the #1 band is Nickelback. Most of the list is either what you would expect or at least could understand but there were a few that surprised me just because I didn't know that many people even had an opinion about them.

My personal list would have Linkin Park higher. I agree there are bands on there I wouldn't expect, but there are bands not on the list that I would expect. Like maybe New Kids On The Block or any other boy band. I've also heard that a lot of people don't like 4 Non Blondes. But maybe they aren't on the list because they aren't on peoples minds.

I think it's just that this list seems to be focused on rock music but yeah, everyone loved to hate on boy bands.
The one that surprised me most was the Spin Doctors. I didn't think anyone cared enough to hate on them but then I wasn't paying much attention to music when they had their one hit.
What's kinda funny is, I had gotten to thinking about my own little list of popular bands that I don't particularly care for earlier in the night, before the DJ brought up this list. I don't think I'd go far enough to say I "hate" any of them, though, since most of them have at least one song I like.

Some seem more "I hate this song" but other than maybe Phish I can't say it's all that surprising.
Anyway,

Why was it so popular to bag on Nickelback anyway? Sure, they're pretty generic but it was like people went out of their way to hate them for some reason.

In Canada it was bad. We have this lovely thing called the CRTC that ensures a certain amount of Canadian content is contained in scheduled programming, whether it’s radio, tv, whatever, so we heard a LOT of nickleback when they were popular. There was some serious burnout up here, so it’s interesting the hate made it all the way down to, what did you call it, Texas’ hat? 🤠
One of my classmates was from nicklebacks hometown, you risked a throat punch ribbing her about it.

It did seem to be universal for a while. What you've told me is giving me a theory, though.
Canadian radio pushes Canadian band. Canadian fans get sick of it, express their loathing. Everyone sees that loathing out of context, turns hating that band into a meme.

I even bought their album. That was the problem because it was pretty bad, at least to me. But they do have a few good songs. I'd rather listen to them over Linkin Park, no rapping or whiney annoying vocals. But I wouldn't say I hate either band, hate is a strong word. I would say dislike somewhat.

I think a few of the bands are on this list because they have an overplayed song. Like Spin Doctors with their songs Two Princes and Little Miss Can't Be Wrong. But they actually have some pretty good songs besides those two. One of my favorites is Mary Jane. Man I miss the 90s.

I genuinely forgot the Spin Doctors had a second hit.
Really, though, I think a lot of these can be chalked up to how old the listener was when a band was at its peak of popularity. It's easy to not understand something in hindsight if you were too young at the time. Likewise, we probably all reach a point where new music just doesn't hit the same.
Of course, taste also changes with age.

When I was in high school I had the attitude that I would always keep in touch with current music. Now I'm just a semi-old man complaining about how much better music was when I was younger. The same as my Dad was doing to me back then.

They've said that before so I'll believe it when I see it.
