So was fire pro z just a port of fire pro d to the ps2? I don't ever see people talk about it much. Was it terrible?

No it was an entirely new game. A lot of people called it Fire Pro D.5 as the mechanics were only slightly updated, but it brought in the layering system to the edit mode. Here's a nice review on it

Fire Pro Z was in some ways "uglier" than FPR or FPD, as it had the weird camera angle that made the sprites look small, bad sound effects, Arena entrances and crowds looking horrible etc. With playing import games being expensive, PS2 emulation still being in it's infancy and FPR coming out only 2 years later with a bigger roster there was no real reason to bother with Z besides the story mode.

Thank you both for the info. So did it have the same wwf/wcw rosters as D?

Z sucked. Graphics were squished and ugly as previously mentioned. It was supposed to be the last game in the series even based on the cover of the game(a message saying something like goodbye fire pro/farewell fire pro.) Spike thought the release sucked and thats why fpr came out a short while later to help rectify much of fpz's short comings.

It was thought to be the last game, but it was the latest in a line in games billed as the final title in the series... Before that, there was Final Bout on Super Famicom, and Final Fire Prowrestling on GBA, which came out like a year before Z!
I don't think nearly as poorly of it as others. The loss of American wrestlers kind of sucked, but it was still a refinement of FPD in gameplay; adding ground reversals to D made the gameplay a bit deeper since knocking the opponent down was no longer a 100% free followup.
The sprites were annoyingly squished tho, I'll agree.

Z was the only console Fire Pro game that I haven't owned since picking up the series with D. I didn't have a PS2 at that point and the reason I eventually got a PS2 was because of FPR, LOL. So I never found the need to get Z too.
The one thing I really wish that FPR and FPW would have got from Z was the outdoor arena. I would have LOVED that for e-fed purposes, especially if we could get "day" and "night" versions of it.
Also, wasn't Z the first FP game to have appearance layers?

I gotta be honest, I think Fire Pro Z is such a great game I mean, the rosters are different and better in Fire Pro Z! We got new wrestlers such as Hiroshi Tanahashi, Kenzo Suzuki, Blue Wolf, Naomichi Marufuji, Kotaro Suzuki and many more. There's some western wrestlers such as Samoa Joe, Steve Corino, and many more. Plus some wrestlers made their first appearance in Fire Pro Z such as Shinsuke Nakamura and Lowki. There are new promotions including ZERO-ONE, U.F.O., WEW, and World Japan. Also there's an awesome story mode where you can either play as 4 legendary wrestlers such as Mitsuharu Misawa, Keiji Mutoh, Shinya Hashimoto, or Masahiro Chono then you can relive some of their moments in wrestling history. So I gave Fire Pro Z a 9.5/10!

Z sucks, probably the only Spike Fire Pro game close to being as bad as it was the NA version of the first GBA game but at least it still had WWF guys even though they were recolored. I think there were only a small amount of wrestlers included that are not on the default roster of D or Returns.
Jimmy Yang Kenzo Suzuki Satoru Asako Yasushi Kanda
That's it, right?

Yeah, I think there were pretty few people unique to FPZ - most had either been in D shortly before or would be in R shortly after. I'd almost count Nakamura, since he was changing so much early in his career, his FPZ self was probably fairly different than FPR (although not nearly as different as he would become).
I never really played the story, so I can't vouch for it either way. It was uglier than D for some reason, though, which didn't help it much. It also came out around the same time as KOC (between 1 and 2, I believe) which really didn't do it any favors by comparison. It did have some cool new moves, but Jason Blackhart figured out how to port many of them backward into FPD, so if you were around this community at the time, you had those moves in FPD anyway.
I'm not knocking it, because I'm sure for some people it was what SFPWXP was for me - that first introduction to the series, the thing that pops into your head when you think "Fire Pro." But there are reasons it didn't do well and may not hold up as well as D and R for most folks.
