I've always meant to ask this: what separates a Square + X attack from an O attack? Is it just an extra slot for a strong attack, or does it possess mechanical differences?

Whether it's meant to or not I see it as the grapple finishing move. It's harder to hit than the other buttons so it should be special

It has different properties than the other strong moves, in that they will cause the opponent to stand up dazed if applicable, while small+medium will keep them down longer. For that reason, there's a time and a place for it to be a finisher, and a time for a move at O/Up+O/Left-Right+O/Down+O to be the finisher, at least as front grapples go.

I'll need to verify whether it's true, but I think small+medium moves get a slight damage bump as well.

Also, in addition to the post-move "Dazed" or "Down" status (which is incredibly important and the main way I differentiate choosing Square+X moves from O moves), there's a specific order for the Okita Yaburi "Finisher Stealing" move. If there isn't a Finisher or Special marked move in the Front Grapple section, Okita Yaburi command will always choose the move from the same "BIG" move slot. I just can't remember if it's one of the O slots or the Square+X slot. In any case, if you don't have a finisher or special in front grapple, this factor could be another reason to put your "biggest" front grapple move in that specified slot. I'm sure someone will specify which slot that is soon since I completely forgot it

Thanks for the responses. What about the diving Square + X attack?

I'm far less than 100% sure on this one but I think Square + X may differ because:
1) A move in this slot may send the opponent down for longer than the other Post/Diving slots.
2) Either Post/Diving "Square + X" or "O" is the move automatically chosen during a Doomsday Device set-up.
But I'm having that thing happen when I've been away from the game too long and am forgetting more than I remember PLUS a lot has changed/been revealed with FPW that I'm still wrapping my head around.

The doomsday thing really ticks me off because I always use the Small and Medium for standing, because hitting the two button input for a standing move is a little ridiculous. And more finishers are to grounded opponents off the top, so the double button makes sense there more also.
It should priority differently than just those button spots. Make just choosing a new move in the double team spot, since someone might have two hurricaneranas in their flying moves anyway.
