I was reminded that backstages matches were a thing after watching gameplay of the old WWF/E games and it made me think, How exactly would backstages matches work for a game like FPWW, And would anyone want to see that in Fire Pro at all?

No.

I'd happily welcome it, but I don't see it being implemented, no.

Yeah, I'd probably be interested to see it (just because more variety is always better), but it seems really unlikely. Backstage brawls, to my admittedly limited knowledge, don't seem to be common in Japan and I have no idea how it would even look or work within the game's mechanics.

I think it could work if they changed the logic around to facilitate fighting outside more than it currently does.
Something like that could be pretty sweet. And who knows, director Matsumoto mentioned he wanted to implement more American match types into the game. Unless I'm not recalling that correctly, so maybe that could happen.

No, it would need to be a new venue. And then there would need to be referee logic that allows him to treat the back-stage brawl area like a normal ring. More trouble than it's worth.

New venue like the entire arena would be a ring and stage with fans like normal plus a backstage area all together? That would be a pain.
I was thinking teleporting through the curtain and then it loads a new arena and your fight there. Like no mercy.
Either one would probably be insane to implement.

Seeing as Fire Pro is primarily a Japanese inspired series, it kind of links it directly to "wrestling as a combat sport" which is why we don't see it deviate into other match types that much.
I'm not sure what counts as Japan's biggest "major" promotions, but assuming Wikipedia is right, between NJPW, AJPW, NOAH, DG, and DDT, only the latter really does stuff out of the ring like the empty Tokyo Dome match and silly stuff like that.
Personally, I'd love to see them try to add a new match type to the game. Now what that is, I couldn't even tell you. I think the community has given us Royal Rumbles, Iron Man, First Blood, and more niche match types like a Survival mode.

I could actually see it being done easily but I wouldn't imagine it would be too spectacular. Nothing more than a novelty aesthetic and not interactive really. Especially if done as its own venue but would a small teleportation mechanic near the stage entrance really be some kind of miracle of coding? Either way seems pointless other than the novelty aspect of it. Burning hammer onto the concrete floor :O

One interview I remember did talk about potentially implementing fighting in the crowd. Don't remember if that was just a "wouldn't it be cool if we did that" sort of thing or a "we're looking into doing this" sort of thing, though.

Only way this could happen is if we found a way to totally reskin the Octogon to look like a backstage and do away with the crowd , turn the ref invisible and that would be the most "backstagey" we would ever get. Also, no weapons because it would be a mma rules match...

I don't think it'd look too good because of the isometric graphics. How would it deal with view obstructions for example? Unless it's just a big square with stuff scattered around the top 2 sides. Even then how would they deal with walking on multiple levels like on top of boxes or jumping from the top level to a lower one?

They said they'd like to explore it if they got an expanded budget but it currently isn't planned or in production. I don't think it'd look too good because of the isometric graphics. A No Mercy free system wouldn't work but imagine an arena or match type that subs out the Gruesome cage for a circle of cars in a parking garage. Add the ability to add weapons laying on the floor like a deathmatch and you have yourself a parking lot brawl.

If it opened the door to an Island Death Match mode, I'm all for it.

We can start off with tweaking the computer's logic so it doesn't run away from fighting on the ramp and stage, since you can already do so in the game. Combine that with the referee staying in the ring and counting falls as per the Falls-Count-Anywhere mod, and you'd already have a pretty nifty addition.
