I have next to zero knowledge of modern technology but as i am spending hours making these edits what happens if there is no more Steam? Will I still have ability to play the game on my computer? Will I still have my edits?

All the edit data is saved locally, so if Steam goes down it will only affect the subscriptions. You'll still have access to the edits, whether they were created or downloaded.

Someone managed to ask Valve about this and posted the results on redditand if you don't want to go there, here's the reply:  Yes, your save file won't magically disappear if Steam does bite the big one. In that situation though, the cloud storage would no longer exist, so you'd have to manually move files between computers. |

Thanks for letting me know that. I really don't feel like losing thousands of hours worth of editing due to something I have zero control over. Already sucks all my Returns stuff is in shambles now.
