Race, Lou These as a ref, and Dory Funk Jr. Can you imagine being there to see these three American pro wrestling legends in the same ring back then? Ringside tickets were probably $5 and came with an entire roasted chicken, a pack of cigarettes, and a pony keg of beer!!! This pic is fun, too! Remember these paper things people used to covet and get information from? Maybe you don't?... I love this picture of Race, look at the CHOPS! And that physique so common to that era, one built with a committed regimen of chain smoking, KFC, and lots of beer/whisky, but all of those guys were double tough and could pull off hour long broadways night after night, all while riding thousands of miles a year on the highways of North America, or flying to the UK, Europe, or Japan. Very different time and very fun to look back on and see how much everything has changed.

That's really cool. There are probably very few people (and maybe no one, at that time, without a crystal ball to see how Harley and Dory would turn out) in that crowd who could grasp the import of what they were seeing there.
Also, you totally made me think Dory had died. (I checked, and thankfully he hasn't.)

That was my thought too. I saw this thread get bumped and went, "oh crap, who died now?"

Jonathan “Pops” Whitherspoon passed away today. Celebrity deaths usually come as a shock, but this one really hurt. I’ve loved this guys stuff for ages, way back to his stand up days, it was awesome seeing him back in the spotlight next to Charlie Murphy in Black Jesus, those two stole the show. I will genuinely miss the man.

He was excellent in The Boondocks. He'll be missed.

He was excellent in The Boondocks. He'll be missed. Yeah, he was great in Boondocks! Definitely one of my favourite humans. To this day, every time I see a kid losing his/her shit having a tantrum in a store, this comes to mind. 🙂

RIP Fred Cox
Minnesota Vikings All-time leading scorer and inventor of the Nerf Football
The latter was among the very first toys that I remember having (and the earliest I was photographed with; I was 3) and helped foster a lifelong love of sports
Definitely a "game changer" for folks who either couldn't afford regular footballs or wanted a safer alternative to the standard ball that could be enjoyed by everyone
And apparently he was a pretty good kicker too! (NFL's 2nd all-time leading scorer at the time of his retirement in 1977)
