Okay, so I've been intrigued by this game for a little while. I'm sure I remember someone on here (well, on the old site, to be specific) being a pretty big fan of it but I don't recall who. I've been looking for a good game about traveling the galaxy in a spaceship, exploring and getting into space battles, and this one seems interesting.
Nothing I read about it, though, seems to clarify much about what type of game it actually is. It clearly appears to be online to some degree, but is it like a total free-for-all? Is it like an MMO? Are other people always in my game, or can I play it without dealing with other people at all?
It's on sale on X-Box right now and I'd like to decide whether to get it while it is. Someone sell me on it!

You have the option of jumping into public servers or private. I played 180 hours solo. Soak is the most Elite Dangerous man here, though. Last I heard, he was rubbing his belly with oil in deep space.

Cool. That's probably gonna steer me a bit more towards getting it. Some stuff I've read makes it sound like a straight MMO. I used to play WOW, I've played all the MMO I need to in one lifetime. The prospect of playing this game solo seems hella cool. Thanks, Wondy.

Oh it definitely is an MMO in terms of mechanics and motivations and stuff. Just that you do all the farming and upgrading and everything else in a spaceship instead of as an orc or whatever. If that sort of grind doesn't appeal to you anymore, something to consider.
But it's still fun flying around in space. And even playing solo, I found it rewarding just getting better at flying the thing, and figuring out ways to become more efficient at the otherwise menial tasks I was doing, missions, etc. And I spend a whole lot of time just figuring out builds and that sort of thing, which is fun to me for some reason. Also, photo mode makes for some gorgeous visuals, where you can move the camera around freely.

I don't mind the "grind" aspects as much as, like, being in the middle of doing that, or be trying to get into the story, and having some level 70 come out of nowhere and kill you for shits and giggles and start teabagging you or whatever....
Just like, learning to fly the ship and explore the galaxy and take cool photos and shit sounds cool as hell though. I played Rebel Galaxy for a little bit looking for that kind of feel, but I couldn't get super invested in it. Those aspects were also what made me like Mass Effect Andromeda far more than it deserved. I JUST WANT A GOOD SPACE EXPLORIN' GAME

It did.
I've played several hours of this new update, and it really is a new game. The original reviews are pretty much moot at this point, and the developer has promised even more free content is on the way.

Quick rundown of elite: much like firepro, it's only as good as what you put into it. It provides you a sandbox, which can both be social or solo, and like wondy said it can get quite grindy. The single best thing about it is the atmosphere it can provide. Flying with a well configured controller, a good set of headphones, and properly set voice commands can suck away hours of my life if I let it. And that's with zero combat/mining, just straight space truckin'.
Along with Dirt Rally, this game's made me consider buying a VR headset just to further increase the experience.
