Presented below is the game manual for the original Super Fire Pro-Wrestling.
Released in 1991, Super was the first entry on Nintendo's 16-bit Super Famicom hardware, and the first
Wrestling game released for the system.
Stay tuned as all 48 pages of this manual are posted.
Page 1: It took me years to realize that the Wrestler on the cover is getting struck with an Enzuigiri (you can see
the opponent's boot to the right of the photo).
Page 2: storage instructions.
Page 3: overview of game modes including: Official League, Open League, Elimination, Exhibition Match and Wrestling Tutorial mode.
Page 4: button configuration and two gameplay tips involving top rope and ringside actions.
Page 5: button configurations continued. Page 6: mode select, options menu, password system and rules for winning/losing matches
(such as remaining outside the ring for 20 seconds results in a 'ring out').
Page 7: Official League (World Championship) mode explanation, along with Official League's point system for winning matches.
The bottom of page 7 explains how players can edit tag teams in Official's tag division.
Page 8: Exhibition Match mode explained with a special emphasis on Lumberjack Deathmatch settings.
Page 9: Elimination Match mode explained. The bottom of page 9 lists the Wrestlers featured in each of the 8 pre-assigned stables.
Page 10: Open League mode explained.
Page 11 explains the Wrestling Tutorial mode and each of the corresponding levels/lessons.
Page 12 features 'Winpoint Advice' from longtime Fire Pro staff member 'Fighter' CHACHAMARU.
The above illustration on page 12 looks like Shinya Hashimoto is going for a Senton Splash against Antonio Inoki
from outside the ring.
Page 13 includes gameplay tips for strikes and groggy states. Page 14 includes tips on grapple timing (something we all struggled with at first),
and various techniques applied to downed opponents.
Page 15 explains running/dash techniques and back grapples. Page 16 explains top rope moves onto downed opponents and grapple reversals.
Page 17 goes into detail on submissions (and how to weaken opponent's skills with them). The page features a great illustration of Yoshiaki
Fujiwara applying a Rear Naked Choke on (who looks like) Masakatsu Funaki.
Page 18: explains combination play; techniques that can be used in tag team situations. In the above photo, one form of co-op play is
using a tag partner to break a submission hold with Inoki's Enzuigiri.
Page 19 continues to explain different combination techniques. The bottom of page 19 includes an example of restraining an opponent
while a tag partner goes for Hogan's Ax Bomber-styled Lariat.
Page 20: double team moves. The highlighted examples include a double team Brainbuster, Backdrop and Atomic Drop.
Page 23 displays various ways to make opponents bleed including: Irish Whipping into corner posts, Headbutt, and Wheel Kick.
The bottom of page 23 displays the three stages of stamina a Wrestler has. The first picture is a Wrestler with normal health.
The second picture is a Wrestler in a weakened state, and the third is a Wrestler with little-to-no health remaining.
Submission holds target different parts of the body and can lead to a Wrestler's fighting stance changing.
Page 24 is the title page for the next section that covers each of the 21 standard Wrestlers. The cover illustration contains Giant
Baba going for a Dropkick on a nervous Hulk Hogan; while Antonio Inoki watches in the background.
Pages 25 - 26: a diagram teaching readers how to read the following section for each Wrestler. Page 25 includes Hammer Throw
(Irish Whip) techniques.
The first screenshot next to each Wrestler's character portrait includes their Fire Pro nickname (such as Inoki's
being 'Fighting Legend').
I've noticed that all of the moves highlighted in red are submission holds.
Pages 27 - 28: Tommy Bomber (Jumbo Tsuruta) & Super Kaizer (Jushin Liger).
Pages 29 - 30: Phantom Guy (Pegasus Kid) & Bloody Allen (Bad News Brown).
Pages 31 - 32: Mad Tiger (Tiger Jeet Singh) & Knight Blaster (Road Warrior Hawk).
Pages 33 - 34: Ax Duggan (Hulk Hogan) & Hurricane Rikimaru (Riki Choshu).
Page 35: Shinya Hatamoto (Shinya Hashimoto) & Page 36: Jo Kajiwara (Yoshiaki Fujiwara).
Page 37: Makoto Higaki (Masakatsu Funaki) & Page 38: Mitsuhide Hikawa (Mitsuharu Misawa).
Page 39: Iron Blaster (Road Warrior Animal). Page 40: Blade Musha (Great Muta).
Page 41: Astro Blaster (Ultimate Warrior). Page 42: Akira Saeba (Akira Maeda).
