Gekitou Pro-Wrestling Toukon Densetsu Complete Strategy Technique BookKnown in Japan as: 激闘プロレス!! 闘魂伝説 完全攻略テクニックブック
Pages: 64 Publisher: Tokuma Communications Year: 1989 Our next guidebook scan project focuses on the classic 8-bit Wrestling title Gekitou Pro-Wrestling Toukon Densetsu (better known as Tecmo World Wrestling outside of Japan). While our good friend Patmanqc did a fantastic job with his informative 'History of Tecmo World Wrestling' video recently, I felt there was no better time than the present to share an original guidebook dedicated to the game itself. So, check back often as more pages are regularly added from this guidebook. Dust cover front and back. The cover of the guidebook features the Japanese Famicom artwork of Tecmo World Wrestling. I always thought the masked Wrestler going over the ropes was based on Mil Mascaras. The bald commentator certainly reminds me of either NJPW Dojo Trainer Kotetsu Yamamoto. The graphic on the back page is of the final boss Black King (renamed Blue King in Tecmo World Wrestling). Dust jacket inner. Includes book credits, as well as the other Complete Strategy Books released by Tokuma at the time. Inner cover and back. Pages 00 - and 01: title page.

Pages 02 - 03: table of contents and basics section title page. If you love anime-style artwork, you're going to love the rest of this guidebook. Pages 04 - 05: mode selection, character selection, and an explanation on the pre-match minigame 'warming up'.
Pages 06 - 07: controls for basic attacks and grapples. Pages 08 - 09: techniques on downed opponents, along with an explanation on training backup. Pages 10 - 11: explaining the 'biometer' or energy bar used to win grapples. Page 11 is the title page for the next section 'fighting spirit edition'. Pages 12 - 13: additional techniques involving submission moves and pin attempts. Pages 14 - 15: top rope, ringside, finishing moves & rope techniques. Pages 16 - 17: additional techniques including top rope and kick placement. For the 0.3% of you out there who still don't think Akira Dragon is based on Antonio Inoki... Pages 18 - 19: fall and zoomup techniques. Pages 20 - 21: counter strategies with character Pat Gordon used as an example, along with the title page for the next section dedicated to Wrestler profiles.

Like other Japanese Wrestling games of the era, the roster of Tecmo World Wrestling was inspired by real-life Wrestlers. All of which, under different aliases to avoid copyright infringement. Pages 22 - 23: Dragon Akira is based on Antonio Inoki. The next two pages focuses on each Wrestler's special zoom-up moves and a summary of gameplay tips. Dragon's special moves are the Enzuigiri and the German Suplex Hold. Chris Hyper (Tiger Mask). Pages 28 - 29. Chris Hyper's specialty moves are the Backdrop and Northern Lights Suplex. I like how the guidebook artwork of the Tecmo cast looks closer to their real-life counterparts. In the illustration on page 29, Chris Hyper is performing a Rolling Sobat, one of the real-life Tiger Mask's signature techniques.

Pages 30 - 31: Pat Gordon (Lou Thesz). Pages 32 - 33: Pat's special moves are the Backdrop and Avalanche Hold. Pages 34 - 35: Rex Beat (Road Warrior Animal). Rex looks like he is holding a bottle opener, a nod to Rex's heelish persona. Pages 36 - 37: Rex Beat's special moves are the Powerbomb and the 'Deadly Drive' (Gorilla Press Slam). Pages 38 - 39: Kenji Muramasa (Riki Choshu). Pages 40 - 41: Kenji's signature moves are the German Suplex Hold and Avalanche Hold.

Thank you Shadow master for purchasing and scanning this guide! I am working on adding pure white and making single pages to bundle in a CBZ format that will be uploaded to archive.org. The site will then make the bundle into multiple formats, adding OCR in the PDF version (it's not perfect, but a good start). Here is a sample of the original versus the final version.

Thank you, as always, Cobrettie. There's about 24 pages left to scan for this guide.
I can't wait to post (what I think) is another character that was intended, but scrapped for the game.

This is awesome! Did anyone ever try hacking the US version so that the wrestler's real names are displayed? Thank you. Plenty of pages left to scan for this guide. As to my knowledge, there was never a rename hack made for the US or Japanese versions. Judging by the amount of attention Tecmo World Wrestling content gets online, it's safe to say that the game has a cult following. There certainly should be a rename/attire recolour hack made!
Hackers, I'm talking to you here!

I can't wait to see what the other characters are. I really wish there was a way to add these characters to a pre existing game like Pro Wrestling . They really needed to make sequel to this . I'm glad to have them in Firepro . That way I can have this big federation going against another.

Should be finished by next week, I have the game manual for the Japanese version scanned at the moment and cleaning it up. This is the first Famicom manual I have that is in portrait aspect and it makes it look so tiny! I caught up with the guide book and have up to page 41 cleaned up!

What a fantastic manual. Looking forward to seeing who was intended for the game but scrapped. The main pose of the guy holding up the trophy is very cool. I used the same image for my thumbnail of my history of tecmo wrestling but the only image I could find had a crease down the middle so I had to manually go through and touch it up. This would have definitely been easier LOL
Thanks for the hard work

I'm sorry for the delay lately. In a string of bad events, I just got over a nasty flu - only to pull a muscle in my left shoulder/neck a few days later. The effects of which have slowed down movement in my left arm in the process. Since I tend to sleep on my side, the awkward placement of the pain has made falling asleep extra difficult as of late. Trying to
get enough rest for work is another story.
Anyways, enough about me. Let's get back to scanning the rest of the Complete Strategy Book: Pages 42 - 43: Schwanovich (Stan Hansen). Pages 44 - 45. Schwanovich's special techniques are the Avalanche Hold and the Giant Swing. The illustration on page 45 depicts Schwanovich performing Stan Hansen's signature Texas Longhorns/Yooooooouth! taunt. Pages 46 - 47: Sir Schwartz (Ric Flair). Pages 48 - 49: it's clear from the Wrestler illustration on page 49, that Schwartz was based on Ric Flair. Schwartz's signature moves are the Backdrop and the Northern Lights Suplex. Pages 50 - 51: Randy Smith (Hulk Hogan).
Note Smith doing Hogan's 'Ichiban' taunt. A reference to Hogan's early New Japan Pro-Wrestling run.
Pages 52 - 53: have you ever seen Hulk Hogan wearing Andre The Giant's ring attire? Now you have! Smith's signature attacks are the Deadly Driver and Avalanche Hold. In real life, Andre started wearing his instantly-memorable black singlet after he turned heel in 1987. Besides the infamous Wrestlemania III matchup between Hogan and Andre, The Giant also wore the singlet to cover up the back brace he was wearing from recent back surgeries. Hulk Hogan also wore a singlet as 'Hulk Machine' - a western adaptation of popular Japanese Wrestling faction the 'Strong Machines'.
Maybe Andre was also intended to be in Tecmo World Wrestling. Though, this isn't the seemingly-scrapped Wrestler I was talking about earlier. Stay tuned for more scans.
Pages 54 - 55: Jim Falcon ('Handsome' Harley Race).

For a second I was wondering why Randy Smith was holding a carrot...
