On to guidebook #4. The title of this guidebook is "スーパーファイヤープロレスリングスペシャルで闘う本" (Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special Fight Book) and was
published between ASCII and HUMAN in 1995.
The Special Fight Book covers all of the Wrestlers, their moves and the various game modes for Super Fire Pro-Wrestling Special on the Super Famicom.
The paintings were some of the last pieces of work created by underground comic artist Muddy Wehara (マディ上原).
As usual, please check back often to see all 160 pages as I post them regularly.
The dust cover - front and back.
I always loved the cheesy artwork that went into creating these guides. Before we had Bill Goldberg, we had ...SPECIAL MAN!
The illustration on the back looks like Jun Akiyama is pulling off a dropkick.
Inside dust cover.
Inner cover front and back.
Title page. I think the belt was inspired by the NWF International Championship Antonio Inoki was most famous for holding in the 1970's.
Page 2: table of contents. Page 3 contains a foreword from HUMAN's Story Mode Supervisor: Fumihiko Saito. Here's a rough translation of the foreword:
"There is such a thing as dreaming of becoming a professional wrestler. Every boy has at least once thought, "I want to be a professional wrestler". This is where Super Fire
Pro Wrestling Special's scenario mode comes in. It all starts with the conviction that you are the main character in the upcoming epic drama.
There is the demon coach, Ittetsu Wakamoto (Kotetsu Yamamoto). you have your peers (the player's in-game rivals Sting, Rick Rude and The Undertaker). There are "ideologies,"
"royal roads," and "U genes. The champion road continues as he searches for his path. Will they end up in a mixed martial arts tournament, a traditional American wrestling match,
or an Ultimate tournament? The fate is in your own hands.
There are 105 wrestlers in the game. Over 600 different techniques. You can do anything you want with your imagination. You can see the message that it is up to you to create your
own life.
Super Fire Pro Wrestling Special" supervisor:
Fumihiko Saito (columnist, author)"
Pages 4 - 5: control setup and introductory gameplay mechanics.
Gameplay basics. Page 6 - Running techniques, corner post moves & dives.
Page 7 - Drop from the ropes (cancel), Performance (taunts done with by pressing the L+R shoulder buttons simultaneously), re-entering the ring, ground
techniques and falls.
A brief explanation of the game modes.
Note: Gruesome Fighting mode only becomes available after Champion Road mode has been completed.
Page 10: more gameplay explanations for match conclusions including moves that cause "Referee stoppage" or "Criticals".
Page 11: the four stages of grogginess (small groggy, normal groggy, big groggy, fantastic groggy). Page 11 also displays how a
Wrestler's fighting stance changes after sustaining enough damage.
More gameplay techniques including special moves, Irish Whip-ping opponents into turnbuckles, corner post grapples, throwing opponents
and throwing opponents to the mat.
Page 13 mentions how blood strengthens and weakens certain Wrestlers during a match. We are told to continue to page 18 for more
information on this subject.
Page 14: the different mats available; each representing a different fictional promotion. Page 15 is the start of the Wrestler Database.
Page 16 provides a directory to which page each Wrestler was on for easy reference. Page 17 explains the format for which information was displayed for
every Wrestler in the Wrestler Data section.
You may recognize the artwork for the Wrestler illustrations. Muddy Wehara was responsible for guidebook illustrations for Special and the previous Fire
Pro entry: Final Bout.
Fighter Yamato is Tatsumi Fujinami. Hurricane Rikimaru is Riki Choshu.
Shinya Hashimoto and Masahiro Chono.
Keiji Mutoh and Hiroshi Hase.
Pages 24 - 25: Knight Blaster (Hawk) & Killer Blaster (Power Warrior).
Scott Norton and Hercules Hernandez. Hernandez is the first new Wrestler illustration for this guidebook.
