They put that beautiful oosotogari in at :27 just to tempt me. Damn it 😁 Also, I'm getting increasingly excited for KOF XV. Their character choice has totally sold me on a pre-order. The Orochi team is returning!! Blue Mary will be there and not just as DLC. Ralf and Clark look great!! I don't think Geese was confirmed yet but I feel confident that he'll be in since he was in XIV. Thanks for posting this! It was an excellent and informative article! Really gave a peak into the mentality of SNK's fighting game teams during the early years and the difficult Aruze time.

I really thought it was going to be Gen-An. He's now the one missing character from the original crew.

Guilty Gear Strive is really good and I'm having a great time playing it even though I'm godawful at it. Here's a video of me getting a lucky win against someone who actually knows how to play fighting games:

My god those games are pretty. It must suck being CRITICAL!’d by a dolphin…
Nice one! 🐬
So I gave virtua fighter a go, it’s been a while. It’s always a bit jarring playing VF after an absence, makes you realize how ubiquitous Street Fighter’s mechanics have become (pull back to block, etc). That said, VFs technical stuff is pretty amazing, it is its own creature, it takes some work, but everything is there! The counter system is complex but could make for some amazing matches between skilled players! I don’t have the time to commit any more, but I am enjoying the game for what I can take away without all of the nuance. Diving head first into someone’s chest With Kage-Maru or double stomps with Lau make for a fun bit of gaming, even if you suck at the game! 😁

Out of all the big fighting franchises from the 90's/00's, Virtua Fighter is the one I have the least experience and familiarity with. I think one reason is because, just like you said, it takes the least from Street Fighter. Other than Virtua Fighter, it has usually taken me just a few matches to initially figure out every 3D fighter: those with 3D/polygon graphics and 2D movement (like Tekken) as well as the true-3D games with 3D movement (like Soul Caliber or Tobal). But the learning curve for VF was high because it felt so different. I probably should have given it more of a chance. I definitely missed out over the years on the cool assortment of characters from VF.
I've heard the new Guilty Gear is really good and more friendly to new players - whether that be entirely new fighting game players or people who are experienced with other fighters but just never got into GG. I'll probably give it a try in the future. I respect the anime-aesthetic of the series and their focus on story but I've just never been able to get into the gameplay of previous games. It always felt a little too "floaty" to me. I've heard it has a bit more weight now and there's less emphasis on long multi-hit combos in favor of shorter combos with more impact. Maybe Samurai Shodown's success influenced it.
The dolphin CRITICAL! cracked me up 😄
Saji: "Insert blowhole joke." Hae-Won: "Don't do that."

The success of Samurai Shodown didn't influence Guilty Gear Strive anywhere near as much as the success of Dragon Ball FighterZ. ArcSys was able to tap into a large casual market with that game, and I think it made them realize the potential to bring all those people back into their core franchise.
Edit: If anything I was surprised by the "weight" of Strive. Movement feels way heavier to me than it did in Street Fighter IV (the last fighting game I got really into) and it took me a while to adjust.

I'm having a good time so I'll keep posting these unless somebody asks me to stop.
In addition to marine mammals, this video also features a lariat, making it pretty Crit!Club relevant.

I think that should read “SPLASH” instead of “slash” given the orcas and dolphins. 🙂
Another cool vid!

Ahh yeah, I didn't take into account the huge popularity of DBZ and how it led people to Guilty Gear. I didn't know Strive was heavier than SF4 either. I just thought it was heavier than previous GG games. Early GG games just felt too light to me, even compared to the Marvel vs. Capcom series. (Which became much heavier as the series went on starting from MvC1). There are so many games that just didn't fall into that, admittedly, narrow "sweet spot" of weight for me. It's one reason I love the SF Alpha series as that always felt perfect to me. Ditto for Capcom vs. SNK 2 and a few of the KOF games like '99 and 2002: UM.
