Article:
"Ginger Snap" by Raine Mathewson
Houston, TX- After the fight card for BBO's Barely Legal Championship Boxing The Golden Ticket 2, this reporter had a chance to head to Houston. There, at a modern gym facility, an opportunity was afforded to sit and speak with one of the main event fighters.
Raine Mathewson: "Mr. Garcia, thanks for the opportunity to sit with you before your camp officially begins."
Garcia: "It's my pleasure, but go ahead and call me 'Ginger' because everyone else does."
Raine Mathewson: "Very well. Ginger, how did that nickname fall on you?"
Ginger Garcia: "Well, seeing as your readers can't see me, I'll jump into the boring story. My real name is Raoul Alvarez Garcia Junior. My father came here from Mexico, and my mother is a white American. So while I am half-Hispanic, I have a lighter skin tone, red hair and freckles. So I get called 'Ginger.' It was either that or 'Guero.' So I don't mind the 'Ginger' nickname."
Raine Mathewson: "Did you get hassled much?"
Ginger Garcia: [He shook his head dismissively] "Not really, believe it or not. My old man got me boxing early, so I really didn't get into many fights in school. One bully tried, he didn't try a second time. I pretty much went to school, did homework and then trained under my old man. As far as childhoods go, mine wasn't bad."
Raine Mathewson: "So what brings you to BBO? Why work for Sweet?"
Ginger: "Well, I'm a no-name. So I could try one of the other promoters, but I'd end up getting pushed down. Look at me, my debut and it's already a title eliminator. Sweet saw me in a couple of...unsanctioned bouts...but I didn't have to go through a whole trial. I am going straight to the top!"
Raine Mathewson: "I saw on the fight card that you are called 'Soulless.' Tell me about that."
Ginger Garcia: [He chuckled] "Well, remember back when some kid did a YouTube video about gingers having no souls? Then there's that episode of South Park where the fat kid Cartman was tricked into thinking he was a ginger. So I decided to play with it. Make all the Ginger jokes you want, because when I get in ring, I will be soulless. In the ring, I won't have an ounce of humanity or compassion. That Canuck I'm fighting will be apologizing for constantly having his face at the end of my fist!"
Raine Mathewson: "Sounds like you are serious. Best of luck and thanks for your time."
Ginger Garcia: "No prob. I'm gonna go get get one last beer before I start camp...and yes...it will be a Duff...Duff Dry." [With that he shook this report's hand, laughed and thus ended the interview]
While this reporter found him to be socailable, there was something in the eyes that gave away a streak that if taken lightly, could spell trouble for anyone in his way. The Golden Ticket 2 Main Even should prove to be interesting if Ginger Garcia has his way.
