Virtual Pro Wrestling (PS1)Released in 1996, Virtual Pro Wrestling is the original, Japanese version of WCW Vs The World.
Unlike Vs The World, there are no licensed Wrestlers in Virtual Pro Wrestling. There's also different
Wrestlers, attires, renames and other small tweaks that make Virtual Pro Wrestling stand out on it's
own.
Since finding a translated guide was impossible, I decided to translate all of the Virtual Pro Wrestling
re-names myself:
Supernova Star Gaia (Jushin Thunder Liger)
In Virtual Pro Wrestling, selecting Supernova's second attire displays an exclusive portrait meant to resemble
Jushin Liger's MMA-inspired attire.
Masked Helios (Wild Pegasus/Chris Benoit)
These attires are exclusive to Virtual Pro Wrestling.
Dark Jaguar (Black Tiger)
The Virtual Pro Wrestling version of Eddie Guerrero. Dark Jaguar's second attire was inspired
by the classic Black Tiger costume of the 1980's.
Ryu Fujigami (Tatsumi Fujinami)
Same as Fujinami's Vs The World rename with "Ryu" added on (which translates to "dragon" in Japanese).
Riki Toshu (Riki Choshu)
Seiji Nito (Keiji Mutoh)
Choosing Mutoh's alternate attire in Virtual Pro Wrestling presents a special portrait of Mutoh featuring facial hair
from his Space Lone Wolf days.
It's puzzling that this extra was nixed in the WCW version...since the Lone Wolf attire is still selectable. Weird.
Shinji Harimoto (Shinya Hashimoto)
By now, you've probably noticed the order of the roster in Virtual Pro Wrestling is also different.
Hiroki Take (Hiroshi Hase)
Keisuke Saeki (Kensuke Sasaki)
Masaharu Mikawa (Mitsuharu Misawa)
Available in both versions, Misawa's second costume is an unmasked Tiger Mask II.
Toshiyuki Kamata (Toshiaki Kawada)
I believe Kawada's 2nd attire is based on Kawada's early Footloose days teaming with Samson Fuyuki.
Keita Dobashi (Kenta Kobashi)
You'd be mad if you weren't getting your samsung royalties either.
Akira Ryota (Akira Maeda)
Another example of the Virtual Pro Wrestling taking the effort into having a first and last name.
Toshikatsu Uraki (Masakatsu Funaki)
Masayoshi Higashino (Masahiro Chono)
While Masahiro Chono was licensed in the WCW version, Chono was
not in Virtual Pro Wrestling.
Higashino also contains two exclusive attires in Virtual Pro Wrestling: an NWO Japan attire (that
looks closer to Keiji Mutoh) and Chono's early 90's, pre-NWO look.
What appears like the letters "Touno" are written on the side of Higashino's second attire.
Hiroshi Tenoshin (Hiroyoshi Tenzan)
Gulliver Banba (Giant Baba)
Pump Furuta (Jumbo Tsuruta)
With Japanese pronunciation, Jumbo's Virtual name is pronounced "Punpo" which sounds closer to Jumbo.
Pump's second attire is also a homage to Jumbo's 1970's look.
Akira Taguchi (Akira Taue)
Akira's looking awfully nervous (and Jackie Chan-ish) in his character portrait.
The last of the four pillars is only available as a playable character in Virtual Pro Wrestling.
Katsuo 200 (Yoji Anjo)
Hikaru Susaki (Minoru Suzuki)
Exclusive to Virtual Pro Wrestling is the leader of Suzuki gun Minoru Suzuki.
Hikaru's appearance is based on Minoru's mid 90's PANCRASE look.
Sanshiro Konaka (Shiro Koshinaka)
Brad Gordon (Scott Norton)
Scott's Virtual Pro Wrestling rename is a reference to both the movie Flash Gordon and Scott's "Flash" nickname.
Brad's second attire pays homage to Scott's early "Flash" gimmick.
Span Harrison (Stan Hansen)
Jimmy Bryant (Gary Albright)
Smith Williams ("Dr. Death" Steve Williams)
Nicolai Man (Volk Han)
Fans of Sambo's human pretzel maker will be overjoyed to find Volk Han as a Virtual Pro Wrestling
exclusive.
Though, Han's character portrait looks like he's struggling to pass a vision test.
Kevin Sherlock (Ken Shamrock)
The logic behind this next one puzzles me. Shamrock was unlicensed in both versions, yet in WCW Vs The World,
Shamrock got a redone character portrait.
Shamrock wouldn't join the WWF until a year later. Odd.
Etsuji Odai (Atsushi Onita)
Partisan (Tarzan Goto)
Hulk Leagun (Hulk Hogan)
Leagamania is running wild with two exclusive variants, brother. 80's Hogan with brown hair
and an NWO Hogan (Hogan turned heel just a few months prior to both version's release).
Though...Hulk Hogan turning heel wasn't that original.
...when Ax Duggan's fourth attire went heel in 1994.
