Truth be told, I was approached by an author years ago who wanted to publish a book on this very subject (a complete list of Wrestler appearances in every video game released to date). Ultimately, we lost contact and I have no idea if the author's book ever made it to Amazon. Would this be Wrestling With Pixels? Also, let's not forget Hawlucha. I don't know if its design is based on a particular luchador, though. Wow! An actual, finished book does exist on the subject. This is definitely news to me. No, the author wasn't Audun Sorlie. Her name escapes me now but she had a few ebooks on amazon. One of which was a book called something along the lines of "Five words of Spanish" as a sample to see if the reader would be interested in learning more Espanol or not. I scratched my head at the book's concept, too. Here's some more references from the Double Dragon series that come to mind: Billy Lee is named after Bruce Lee; while Billy's brother Jimmy is named after Jimmy Page. Standard enemy Rowper also gets his name from the character Roper who appeared in the Bruce Lee film Enter The Dragon. Unlike the Lee brothers, Chin Taimei takes on the physical appearance and antics of Bruce Lee. In the Arcade ports of Double Dragon, Chin even has a similar high-pitched shout as Bruce. This version of Abobo is named Jick. I think he's based on Mr. T. This version of Abobo is known as "Bolo" who is named after Bolo Yeung; another opponent fought in Enter The Dragon. The giant boss Abore is based off of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Though, Abore's sprites are very close to a character from another Technos Arcade game released around the same time: Andre The Giant in WWF Superstars. It's said that the Double Dragon series was inspired by Mad Max, The Warriors and Bruce Lee films. My own fan theory is that final boss "Big Boss Willy" is based on Toecutter from Mad Max. The gameboy port of Double Dragon II was actually a localized version of a Japanese game called Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun: Bangai Rantou Hen. One of the stage bosses in the Kunio Kun version is a Japanese Pro-Wrestler with a noticeable jawline similar to that of Antonio Inoki. There's also this charming fellow in the Double Dragon II version. A homage to Jason Voorhees and Leatherface.

Another fighting game worth mentioning is the obscure title Street Fighter IV. No, not that Street Fighter IV. This one: Street Fighter IV (Famicom)The Chinese pirated version that was released on the Famicom back in 1993. Ranboo and Stalong are redesigns of Street Fighter's Guile. Their names are based on Sylvester Stalone and Rambo....and they are British! Moon and Chunfo; the stereotypical fighting monks seem to be based on Tien from Dragon Ball Z. Goho Li and palette swap Cliff are redesigns of Ryu and real-life Karateka legend Mas Oyama. There's even a waterfall in the background. In place of Ken/Joe Lewis, Street Fighter IV offers us Rober and the dreaded "Pasta". Perhaps I should create a new Fire Pro edit called "Pasta Robber" - Street Fighter IV's answer to the Hamburgler. Since we are on the subject of pirated Famicom games from China... Fighting Hero III (Famicom)
The first Fighting Hero game was a clone of the original Street Fighter. The sequel Fighting Hero III (I guess they skipped II because of Street Fighter II) was released in 1993. If you thought Street Fighter II's cast of 12 characters was impressive, Fighting Hero III blows the competition away with a stellar cast of 10 playable characters repeated two more times! Duke (along with his palettes: Frank and Tim) are based on Ken Masters - who is, again, based on Joe Lewis. Lee, Kim and Tiger are based on Bruce Lee. The Wrestling type Bayefu, Ivan and Isaac are based on Zangief/Victor Zangiev. But don't make Bayefu's character portrait angry... Just like any other Street Fighter clone, there's also ripoffs of Blanka, Dhalsim, Balrog and Sagat in the game, too.
Nekketsu Fighting Legend (Famicom):
Known in Japan as Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu, this 1992 Famicom exclusive in the Kunio Kun series is a blast to play. Four player mayhem, dangerous environments and an assorted cast to choose from, think of Nekketsu Fighting Legend as the 8 bit Super Smash Bros. The final boss characters are a tag team of brothers Toragi and Toraichi. A reference to Tiger Mask and Black Tiger. The cool thing is, you can unlock the duo with a code.

So, you want more modern Puroresu games, eh? How about a Japan-only release for your Android devices?
I give you:
プロレスラーをつくろう! THE GOLDEN HOUR (Android)
The title of this game translates to "Let's make a Pro Wrestler! THE GOLDEN HOUR". I believe this game was first introduced in 2014. Besides creating your own Wrestlers, the main selling point of Golden Hour is the inclusion of Wrestling greats in the form of DLC content:
Whether you're a fan of the Western Lariat or the King Kong Knee Drop, you can't go wrong with this pair. New Japan legends Riki Choshu and Tatsumi Fujinami. The Funks; arguably one of the most popular gaijin tag teams in all of Puroresu. Now you can recreate the infamous feud between the Funks and Abdullah The Butcher along with The Sheik.
One of Japan's famous rivalries culminated in the late 1980's between AJPW veterans "Ace" Jumbo Tsuruta and "Mr. Puroresu" Genichiro Tenryu. Japanese shoot fighting fans might also appreciate the inclusion of Minoru Suzuki and Yoshihiro Takayama. Real-life Wrestlers weren't the only characters added to Golden Hour. Manga characters Momotaroh and Kintaroh have also been added. Wolf Hawkfield and El Blaze (Rey Mysterio) from the Virtua Fighter series are also available.

80's Mania Wrestling Returns (Android)80's Mania Wrestling is a game described as a cross between a booking simulator and digital card collecting. After seeing ads for this game on facebook, I was compelled to take a closer look at Mania Wrestling's roster of 80's and 90's Wrestlers, celebrities and other pop culture icons. Included below are the references I could pick out (still under construction):

The pictures aren't loading to confirm but it's possible Buffalo could also be Tatanka just going by the name.
EDIT: Or not. Wow, that picture wasn't what I imagined.
I may have to look through this and see how many I can spot myself.

I'll finish the list in a follow up post. Then we can compare references.
Honestly, 80's Mania Wrestling definitely lives up to it's name. Talk about a nostalgia overload.
Try reloading the page and waiting a bit. If the problem persists, I'll make a collage.

I think the problem might be that the wiki site being referenced doesn't allow hotlinking. I ran into the same issue with them a few days ago while trying to post a picture of Hawlucha.

Jobber Joe makes me think of Glass Joe from Punch-Out!!, while local talent Vinny Bambino is probably named for Vinnie Barbarino from Welcome Back Kotter.
Also, I saw a Curt Grunge alt earlier that I think is based more on Kidman.

I think Beer Can Man is Sandman. Hairy looks like Harry from Harry and the Hendersons but with the ammo strap that Chewbacca wears.

Imagine if 80's Mania Wrestling was an actual, physical card game (or POGZ for the 90's kids out there). "I'd buy that for a dollar!"
So far, it's been a lot of fun going through the roster. Maybe we'll see a few of these characters in the workshop one day.
I'll get around to posting the rest of the roster shortly.

More 80's Mania Wrestling roster characters. Also includes a few video game, movie and pop star references. P.S.: for those that haven't checked out the previous characters, I updated the first post with collages similar to the ones below.
Checking out 80's Retro Mania Wrestling's wiki page is a must. Especially for the tag teams and stables. My favourite stable so far is Big Money: Edit: I think Pharaoh is actually Stevie Ray - one half of Harlem Heat.

Aunt Juju (Is that a typo? On the official site she is called Auntie Voodoo) could be Big Bad Mama from GLOW. Her feud is called "It's Glow Time!" and it's against Madam Tiki and that is Mountain Fiji, also from GLOW So far, it's been a lot of fun going through the roster. Maybe we'll see a few of these characters in the workshop one day. Take a look at Lariatos Workshop. He made some edits with crafted parts like Drool or Overshock ...and more.

Ezekiel is based on Samuel L Jackson's character from Pulp Fiction, while his Soul Daddy alt is based on Sho'nuff from The Last Dragon.
