As much as people knock Hogan for never breaking character, nor changing up his promo for the last 40 years, what better way
is there to hype up a video game than cutting a Wrestlemania-esque promo in the year 2014?
As an Actor, whenever my roles called for a booming, gruff, & over-the-top voice, I would often find myself imitating Hogan's iconic "WATCHA GONNA DO..." promo lines as a warmup. With all respect to Bo Jackson, Hogan certainly knows his audience best.
in 2020, popular mobile title The Simpsons Tapped Out added a content updated simply called Simpsons Wrestling. The Simpsons Wrestling roster is: Captain Flag - This is a tough one. The patriotic American Wrestler could be anyone from Captain America, George Bush or even Kurt Angle.
Dr. Bonebreak - Said to be based on Hulk Hogan and Macho Man Randy Savage. Bonebreak's name is most-likely referenc e to Bonesaw McGraw; Randy Savage's character in Spider-Man the movie.
Iron Yuppie - This business suit-clad opponent could be based on Ted DiBiase or I.R.S.
Professor Werner von Brawn - We already talked about this bulky character. Making his video game return since 1991, Brawn is based on Fritz Von Erich.
Rumbleina - Could be based on Miss Elizabeth. Rumbleina's wedding dress could also be a reference to Elizabeth and Macho Man's on-screen marriage during a WWF segment.
The Beefy Bishop - At first, Wrestling diehards may think of Friar Ferguson or Lucha legend El Santo. Alas, Beefy's in-game bio states that Beefy has "been bringing the beef since 1973". Rumour has it that Beefy is based on Brutus The Barber Beefcake.
Rasputin the Friendly Russian - Rasputin takes his name from famed Russian mystic Gregori Rasputin. Wrestling-wise, the Friendly Russian may be based on Nikolai Volkoff; who became a fan-favourite towards the tail-end of his career in the WWF.
Honest Abe - One of Grandpa's alter-egos. Based on U.S. President Abraham Lincoln.
In card game Uncaged World Fighters, the character 'The Mortician' is based on The Undertaker.

Today's incredibly-rare artifact is an original Arcade kit for Japanese Wrestling title Appoooh (1984)! Appoooh board, instruction sticker and 'Special Magazine'. I find the magazine most interesting. Volume 14 of Game Freak is dedicated to covering Appoooh's gameplay mechanics. The female Wrestler is actually the magazine mascot for the publication; appearing on just about every cover for the magazine. Eventually, I would love to own/scan this issue for everyone here. For lovers of Wrestler illustrations, here are the arcade overlays that display the button combinations to perform each Wrestler's signature move. I find it cool that the illustrations faithfully replicate the in-game graphics for each Wrestler.
Inoke (Antonio Inoki) - Enzuigiri
I wonder who Inoki is facing? Tatsumi Fujinami? Akira Maeda? Karl Gotch? I can't say.
Hanson (Stan Hansen) - Western Lariat
Without a shadow of a doubt, the opponent Hansen is applying the lariat to is legendary maskman The Destroyer. I wonder if Destroyer was also considered to be added to Appoooh? He could have been a splendid final boss.
Additionally, Hansen is pictured wearing his signature cowboy hat. I wonder if Hansen's design was originally intended to wear it in-game?
Giants (Andre The Giant) - Body Press
Again, Andre is facing The Destroyer. Seems Destroyer was the easiest Wrestler design to use for a dummy
character.
Uma (Umanosuke Ueda) - Kendo thrust
No generic opponent to be found here; just a stellar illustration of this lesser-known Japanese heel from yesteryear.
Babu (Giant Baba) - Coconut Crush
Baba is applying a coconut crush on The Destroyer. That can't be good for Destroyer's mask....
Tigerman (Tiger Mask) - Sobat
40 years later, I still find this tights-less depiction of Tiger Mask to be offsetting.
Hogen (Hulk Hogan) - Axe Bomber
Further proof that The Destroyer was used as the generic opponent. Destroyer was known for switching mask colours; most commonly with masks that featured red and blue mask lining. Graphically, Hogan's white-faced character sprite looks awfully similar to....
Buchie (Andullah The Butcher) - Headbutt
No opponent to speak of, but a great depiction of an early 70's Abdullah, as he competed (and subsequently won) the AJPW PWF title. When most Japanese old-timers think of the Butcher, the white pants-ed, goatee-wearing depiction of the Madman from Sudan is usually the first thing that comes to mind.

21 years after his passing, I found the very first appearance of Rikidozan in a video game. In the 14th issue of GAME FREAK's Magazine, the gaming world got their very first look at 1984 Arcade Wrestling title Appoooh! The cover of the issue features GAME FREAK's female mascot performing a Sobat; sending Antonio Inoki, Stan Hansen and Tiger Mask out of the ring. In every match, a banner can be seen from the bleachers displaying the current opponent's name. In the above case, the opponent is 'Buchie' (Abdullah The Butcher).
On page 8 of the issue, a layout of the arena is shown. The banner however reads 'FIGHT RIKIDOZAN'; a Wrestler that was not featured in Appoooh! Page 9 includes illustrations of Antonio Inoki and The Destroyer; another character not included in the original roster.

Today, I have a gift for all of the diehard Fire Pro-Wrestling fans out there. Included below is a download link to the extremely rare Fire Pro-Wrestling Combination Tag official Audio CD.
Fire Pro-Wrestling Combination Tag - Game Music CD (Nippon Columbia)Released in 1989 alongside the game itself, this official 10 track compilation features brand new, fully-arranged tracks inspired by Combination's in-game music. Adding a new perspective on many of the Wrestler themes and familiar jingles found within, the tracks featured on this release are not game rips, but unique compositions. Rock, Jazz, and a good serving of 80's synth are all included. DOWNLOAD LINK:www.mediafire.com/file/7b9lj6lrt98qdcv/Fire+Pro-Wrestling+Combination+Tag+(Game+Music+CD).zip/file The album cover uses the same artwork as Combination Tag's video game counterpart.

In the four years that this thread has remained active, we have made plenty of Wrestling discoveries. Lately, I've been hacking the code of the Fire Pro Wrestling series on the PC Engine; seeing what other secrets the early Fire Pro titles have to offer.
In 2nd Bout, entering the code F820BC20 allows you to play as the strangest character ever added to a Fire Pro-Wrestling title ...
....the frickin' championship belt. Alas, it's just Genichiro Tenryu with a different character portrait and the placeholder name of 'Musashi' (short for Victory Musashi/Antonio Inoki). Inputting the code F820BC21 allows you to play as another bizarre character. A grid-like design that reminds me of a game of hopscotch.
As this character uses Hulk Hogan as a sprite and moveset; I have since named this character 'Hopscotch Hogan'.

Judah seems to be a dead-ringer for 'Judas Effect' Chris Jericho.

While browsing through a 1993 issue of Japanese gaming magazine Gamest, I came across an obscure Boxing game that caught my eye: Top Ranking Stars Year: 1993 Platform: Arcade Developer: Taito 1993 Gamest article. That Kabuki looks familiar... The first character is Alderan Nipper. With mohawk and facepaint, it looks like Nipper was based on Road
Warrior Animal. As a fellow Canadian, I approve of this character. Hailing from Brazil is Storm Viper. Viper is based on Ultimo Dragon. Russian fighter Bruce Hasimikov and Japanese contestant Shouichi Kanou look like Ivan Drago and Rocky. Though, I wouldn't hold it past Taito for basing Shoichi off of Antonio Inoki either. Semi boss King Shanaoh is a Kabuki fighter that uses a hair whip attack similar to that of Buoh from obscure fighter Power Moves/Power Athlete/Deadly Moves.
King Shanoah also reminds me of Retu: the final boss of Final Fight 2; purple hair and all.

Modern Mania Wrestling GM; the leading creator behind current-day Wrestler likenesses is back with a new character: "Founder of Grapple Prep, ED CHANCELLOR silences crowds and opponents alike with his repertoire of literary quips, strong language and wrestling holds!"Since I'm certainly old school-based, I thought Ed was based on 'Leaping' Lanny Poffo's 'The Professor' gimmick. Not so; as Ed is based on Andre Chase of the Chase U stable.

Certainly another 90's brawler that tried to cash in on Street Fighter's success:
Martial Champion
This 1993 fighting game was released by Konami. Martial Champion utilizes an updated control scheme similar to that of Yie Ar Kung Fu. There are clones of Ryu, Guile and an Arabian fighter known as Avu. Despite being billed from Saudi Arabia, Avu's in-game flag is that of Iraq. Ayu uses a scimitar as a weapon. Avu's appearance looks like a cross between Abdullah The Butcher and The Original Sheik Ed Farhat. Avu's name even sounds similar to (Abdu)llah. Judging by the magazine previews, Avu can breathe fire and has a charge attack similar to Data East's fire-breathing Karnov. The blonde American ninja Rachael looks to be based off of Mika from Final Fight 2; yet, this is just a coincidence as Final Fight 2 was released just one month before Martial Champion.

Four years ago when we started this thread, one of the first games that I talked about was Rantou Pro-Wrestling, a game released on the EPOCH Super Cassette Vision back in 1986. While we already covered the roster, we never actually looked at the box art for the game. Rantou's box art features look-alikes of Antonio Inoki applying a Backdrop to Road Warrior Hawk. If you look closely in the background, you may notice Inoki's tag partner, a Hulk Hogan-looking fellow cheering him on. While Rantou was EPOCH's only actual Wrestling video game, that didn't stop the company from releasing more Wrestling-related handheld games. The following toy is called the Women's Pro-Wrestling Mini Game. Released in 1988, the packaging features illustrations of Bull Nakano along with Dump Matsumoto. There's also the text 'Gokuaku'. Both Dump and Nakano were prominent members of the Gokuaku Domei, a popular Wrestling faction in Japan during the 1980's. The included figures are those of the duo. For some reason, EPOCH decided to release the Gokuaku set with different packaging ripping off the Mario series. Much like the chicken or the egg, I don't know which packaging came first. Did Nintendo send a cease and desist? Did the Gokuaku actually endorse this product? Did Bull Nakano get livid and force EPOCH to change the packaging to something Mario-esque? We may never know. The precursor to those abysmal Tiger handhelds was EPOCH's other handheld Wrestling toy: Mini Pro-Wrestling. There's nothing too exciting to say about this toy (and calling it such is bit of a stretch, in my opinion). Basically, a tug of war simulator that contains graphics of generic Wrestlers. Being a game released exclusively in Japan, it seems EPOCH were hoping to sell this game in the West judging by the toy's packaging art. Though, the Wrestler in the blue trunks to the left reminds me of Terry Funk or Bob Backlund. Could that be Stan Hansen taking a body slam in the background? Perhaps the Von Erich brothers? All of which competed in Japan during the 1980's. We may never know...

A brand new card game in Japan features a mascot that looks awfully familiar: Masked Book Breaker Masked Book Breaker (I'm wondering if that's a typo for Backbreaker ...or is this some kind of tabletop booking simulator?) is a card game released by Tsukuba Games. The main selling point for Book Breaker is the number of moves available at a player's disposal. All of which are displayed by two generic Lucha's. Book Breaker's mascot reminds me of Pentagon Jr.

Three years in the making, fans of the Final Fight series may enjoy this upcoming fan-made beat 'em up called Mighty Final Fight Forever: In case you didn't know, Forever is an update to Mighty Final Fight, an 8-bit title that was released on the NES console back in 1993. Of course, former Pro-Wrestler turned Mayor of Metro City Mike Haggar is based on Wrestler-turned Governor Jesse 'The Body' Ventura. I'm also nearing the end of another guidebook scan. The above pages are for the hidden boss character Minoru Randori (Shinobu Kandori) from the ill-fated Fire Pro-Wrestling Iron Slam '96.
