HIDDEN CHARACTER ANTONIO INOKI FINALLY FOUND IN THE CODE OF GEKITOU BURNING PRO-WRESTLING?
Today, with the immeasurable help of lightbulbsun (romhacking.net) I made an exciting new discovery in an old Japanese Super
Famicom title. The game in question is Gekitou Burning Pro-Wrestling, which was released by B.P.S. in 1995.
We've covered the entire Gekitou roster before. Out of all 117 of the Wrestlers featured in Gekitou, there was one legend who was
strangely missing from the Gekitou roster. Antonio Inoki.
Or was he?
Today, while switching out Wrestlers using a custom player modifier code in the final match of World Championship mode, I came
across a weird bonus character:
Unlike the rest of the cast, this Wrestler with a messed up colour palette doesn't have a name. The Wrestler model
isn't in the roster either.
The first attack I noticed was a low shin kick. The same attack Antonio Inoki famously used against Muhammad Ali
on June 26th, 1976. Could we be looking at the never-before-seen Antonio Inoki character?!
Like many unfinished character, Inoki comes with a couple gameplay glitches.
Pressing the Y button with Inoki (even when the opponent is standing) will instantly knock the opponent to the ground
while Inoki subsequently performs a senton. This glitch is so powerful, that it will even interrupt a character's "rage"
animation!
Going for a corner grapple has the potential to make the opponent disappear from the match entirely ...leaving the
player stuck in limbo for the rest of the match. Going for the top ropes allows Inoki to float in the air and around the ring!
Inoki even has his own ending animation. An animation shared with most of the Japanese Wrestlers (Gekitou uses the same
winning animations for many Wrestlers in the game).
Why wasn't Inoki added to Gekitou Burning Pro-Wrestling? Legal reasons? Perhaps. Notable legends like Giant Baba and the
original Tiger Mask have also been omitted. Myself, I believe Inoki was removed simply because programming for his character
wasn't finished.
So, there you have it, folks. After nearly thirty years, another brand new gaming discovery has surfaced. Antonio Inoki - the
Wrestler no one thought was in Gekitou Burning Pro-Wrestling ...actually is. He's just hidden away as an unfinished character
in Gekitou's game code.
