Today (November 17) marks the 20th anniversary of WWF No Mercy's release. Kinda hard to believe it's been that long already. Wow ๐ 20 years? That is insane! I actually remember the day I bought the game really well. It was Wednesday, November 22nd.ย I randomly went to the mall to get a few DVD's. Then I stopped at EB Games.ย Even though I had been really looking forward to Smackdown 2, I impulse bought No Mercy at the same time.ย For some reason I didn't know it was coming but I loved the AKI engine from playing WCW Revenge.ย ย I took No Mercy home and was blown away.ย Not only is it one of my favorite wrestling games ever, and a crucial step on my journey to Fire Pro, but it was also really useful that Fall since Smackdown 2 was a huge disappointment to me!! ๐คฆโโ๏ธ (I think my first match is stillย loading in that game...) I asked for it for Christmas that year, along with a Nintendo 64 so I could actually play it. I was a late adopter because I'd opted for a Saturn back in 1996, which could be considered something of a mistake in hindsight but I also didn't regret it at the time. I'd become a fan of the AKI games after playing them at a friend's house and the magazine review I had read in the November issue of whatever I was subscribing to at the time (Next Generation, I think) made me want it. It may have been the only N64 game I owned for most of 2001 but I didn't get tired of it. ...and I probably should have given this its own thread because it's momentous enough for it. Oh well. Fixing an oversight on my part. Carry on.

I also should have mentioned that the entire reason I even had an N64 in the first place was because I bought it off my friend in Fall of 1999. That was after he loaned it to me during the previous summer so that I could play WCW Revenge which I had actually bought. That's right, I bought that game for a console I didn't even own at that point! But I had rented it to play it and then liked it so much that I bought it so I could play it on his system. Then after a summer of playing it nonstop, I just bought the N64 from him outright. I was rewarded for that purchase by then having the opportunity to play No Mercy a year later!!
I don't have any N64 console memories beyond Revenge and No Mercy but wow those are great memories!
Actually...wait, I have a feint memory of a weird South Park Kart racing game where I chased chickens ๐
I actually regret not getting a Saturn given how instrumental it was in porting Capcom fighting games. Luckily I didn't make the same mistake twice and bought a Dreamcast which bridged No Mercy to Fire Pro.
It's all connected!! ๐

I can think of a few N64 games where I have strong memories but that would be getting off track.
That said, I think most of my No Mercy memories have already been documented in either my IFWA thread or elsewhere in the gaming section.
Oh, and random fun fact: My N64 has a Saturn sticker on it that it has borne for about as long as I've had it.

Some No Mercy memories:
- The "Crumple" animation was endlessly satisfying to me. I also loved how you could achieve it from so many different positions.
- AKI MAN PUNCHES 24/7 ๐
- Breaking the table felt SO satisfying!
- Run-ins always spooked me a little, even if it was a jobber.
- Trying to hold back the whole match from hitting the Hangman's Powerbomb finisher...then doing it 5 times ๐
- The feeling when I got all my save data back after DA GLITCH and feeling like I was a whole person again ๐ถ

I thought of a few more things to share.
Before it came out I had found a Geocities site with prerelease information to keep me excited. It also supplied CAWs for wrestlers that joined after release, like K-Kwik and Raven.
The main thing I remember from it was a funny prerelease shot. It must have come from a point when it still had full entrances because it was a shot of what I assume was a default CAW at ringside but shown from behind.
Being a bald white guy it could've been Austin as well but I doubt it because this guy didn't have any attire on him. Any. Not even tights.
Yes, he was naked.
It's too bad I lost that in a computer crash ages ago because it was a curious piece of history that I haven't ever seen again.
Anyway, when I finally got the game I remember being wowed by the graphics. Screenshots are one thing but seeing it in motion was something else.
I never even really noticed the slowdown so many people complain about until recently. Probably because my experience with WM2K was fairly limited.
And like I said in the IFWA thread, some of my early CAWs were kinda odd. Aside from the obligatory self-inserts of my best friend and me, I had a number of musicians I liked such as Dexter Holland (The Offspring), Jonathan Davis (Korn), Zach de la Rocha (RATM), and Kurt Cobain on one slot. I also had the band Kittie on another.
And of course, I had a few video game characters. There was Jon Talbain (Darkstalkers), Picky (Fighting Vipers), Kunio, and somebody's CAW of Ryu/Ken from Street Fighter.
I also had a CAW of "The Fallen Angel" Christopher Daniels I had found somewhere. I wasn't acquainted with his work yet but he looked cool and I'd read an interview that made him sound interesting.
Incidentally, I'm pretty sure he was the guy I took through the Intercontinental path the first time I tried it in Championship mode. I also remember being intimidated enough by the first time I had to face Kane in it that I deliberately got myself DQ'ed by hitting him with a chair straight away.

I forgot that there was even a commercial for it.

Is it crazy that I watch that commercial and STILL feel like nothing has touched the AKI wrestling games? ๐
