Sorry for the noob question but how do you know your character is ready to pull a finisher move? There isn’t an indicator, is there?

There are no special meters or anything, hidden or otherwise. You can go for it at any time

Yeah once you get the timing down on grappling, Fire Pro is much more about trying to put on a cool match and setting up interesting spots (or at least I think it tends to go that way for most people). A finisher or other big move will be more likely to get reversed if you do it when the opponent isn't tired and bigger moves usually take more of your breath but the gameplay is something you just have to get a feel for. There really isn't a right or wrong way to play it.

Okay one more question. I see SML as the button press for some finishers. What does SML mean?

There are some moves where you have to press small and medium (square and x on playstation) but I don't think there are any where you have to press all three.
SML is the games abbreviation for small

keep in mind the game is based off japanese prowrestling psychology. a big difference being that finishers are not an instant kill move like you would traditionally expect in the wwf. if you go on to create an edit just know you assign your finisher to any move in your movelist including counters and taunts. same goes for your special moves.
finishers should be done sparingly one reason being, i believe, that it contributes to your match rating if it contributes to the actual end of the match. also some characters get a damage boost the first time they do a finisher.

Wow, I literally never realized until now how confusing that "SML" notation is for a game that has small, medium, and large attacks! Like it never clicked with me until this conversation. 💡 There are few things as cool (or as needed) in life as seeing something you've taken for granted for years from a totally new perspective. Not only was Avenger's question a really good one, but it forced a 18 year Fire Pro veteran to re-evaluate everything he knows about this game and abbreviations. And yeah, there is no indicator when to perform your finisher like in WWE style games. You just kind of have to feel when you should do a finisher based on how the match is going. Once you can perform your other strong damage moves without getting reversed, it's probably safe to try the finisher. If you download mods, they give you access to damage meters. So if you used those, it could give you a better indication of when you think the finisher will win the match. Aside from that, it's really more of a "dance" between wrestlers where you just have to know when to go in for the "dip' 💃🕺

Geese says to dance with the opponent. I prefer a more straight-forward "Punch that asshole in the face until he dies" approach.
It worked on Frog Buster. It can work on anyone.
