I hate the Bulls ownership and front office. They let the T-Wolves jump them in the draft with a trade to get Jarrett Culver, who would have been a wonderful fit alongside Zach Lavine, they pick a player that an autopick would have drafted for them in Coby White, rather than take a chance on potential in someone like Rui Hachimura or Sekou Doumbouaya. Then in the 2nd round, with Bol Bol still on the board, they pick a typical Bulls type hustle player. Whee.

Yeah, they're straight up scum and have been since the glory years in the 90s. I liked White in college and feel that he'll contribute "something" to the team but yeah, they didn't really need another 2 guard with LaVine being the primary occupant of that role (and the primary offensive focus). They just flatly don't WANT to get better and whenever they do improve, it's either dumb luck or because management got their feelings hurt and decided to "prove a point." They know that no matter how shitty the Bulls are, people will still come see them because Chicago is one of the b-ball meccas of the world and diehards are gonna diehard. Until the owners start losing money, things will remain the same as ever. It's really kind of depressing and makes me question why I've continued to follow them after being largely irrelevant for most of the last 20 years (they did have a 6-year window of competitiveness between the rise/fall of Derrick Rose and the emergence of Jimmy Butler but yeah, too many years of tears besides). I can't even take solace in the "at least we're not the Knicks" gibes because really, at least the Knicks have TRIED to improve things in their front office/coaching (to little effect, but efforts have been made and the new GM doesn't seem as foolish as his immediate predecessors). It's the exact same management atmosphere that I see in Kansas City with the Royals. smh

I was happy to see 3 players from the University of Tennessee get drafted. It's good for the program to see three 3star players come in and turn into NBA draft picks.

^I like Grant Williams a lot and hope that he can have a Draymond Green-like impact in the NBA (even if it's for Boston) as an undersized PF with a high motor and great IQ. One of those silly things that if he were 3 inches taller, he'd have easily gone top 10.....two years ago.
Schofield was cool too and I wish him success but I don't know if his physicality will transfer well to the more finesse-oriented NBA
Mizzou's only realistic draft hopeful was Jontay Porter and (like his brother Michael in 2018), his injury concerns caused his stock to plummet sharply, with Jontay going undrafted (despite being in the conversation as a potential 1st rounder after last year's draft). I'll be interested to see if Jontay signs on with an NBA team or plays oversees. I'll likewise be interested to see if Michael is healthy enough to suit up for the Nuggets this year and play up to the potential that saw them take him at #16 overall last year despite TWO major injuries.

re: the womens world cup:
I dont think there was any controversy about USA tonking Thailand by 13 goals. It's a tournament, goal difference is a factor in determining who advances, so you score as many as you can, every game, no questions.
The issue was the USA team's silly and over the top goal celebrations. The first few goals, sure, get excited, but once you've established total control of the match, celebrating every goal like you've won the whole tournament reeks of rubbing it in. The USA women are the best team in the world, the Thais were hopelessly overmatched, IMO the Americans should've acted like respectful professionals with slightly more muted celebrations after say, the 5th goal.
My $0.02
also, yay Raptors. Last time I watched a basketball game, Spud Webb was still playing for Atlanta.

Man, the “Beautiful Game” sure can be ugly at times. VAR is some bullshit, and the “simulations”, I know they’re tactical and all that, but wow, pros taking dramatic dives that disrupt the flow of a match really ugly shit up. Cameroon vs England was not a pretty match. The offsides called were legit, and shit didn’t go Cameroon's way and they were frustrated, but it was an ugly reminder of how at times overused or under-utilized VAR has been in FIFA sanctioned events. There has to be a way to standardize VAR utilization amongst refs so that it’s not so subjective, or just turf it all together.
The ref was driving me nuts in this match, she was constantly in the way of passes and plays, I got a laugh when the Cameroon player shoved her out of the way at one point. Obvious act of frustration, but at a World Cup level, you need to be more aware! (OT: back in my rugby days I had run ins with refs a LOT. One particular little weasel kept getting in the way of my teams plays and passes, I got tired of it and warned him to stop or I would include him in the play. Got in the way again as the ball went to the ground so I grabbed him and pulled him into a ruck. Heard a pathetic tweet of his whistle from the bottom of the pile, touch judges were peeling players off of the pile, I was expelled from the game and handed a suspension but got lots of laughs from both teams. Refs are in the game, too! 🙂).

Apparently StubHub has a "low" ticket for Friday's USA/France Women's World Cup Quarterfinal going for $680 USD. There are several tickets going for over $2000 USD including a pair listed for $11, 000 USD. I know it's the biggest draw of the tournament with host country France (ranked 3rd in the world) playing perennial favorite USA (ranked 1st in the world) in the French capital but damn, I never thought I'd see those prices for a women's sporting event. Kind of cool in one regard and completely ridiculous in another.

Yeah, cool to see these women generating such heat, but yeah, those prices are outrageous (especially when some working families can’t feed their kids or pay their bills, but that’s for another thread...). Hopefully the ticket demand and revenue generated rolls over to the highly skilled athletes who have dedicated their lives to the game and they can start being PAID like the top draw stars that they are instead of the small fraction of what their male counterparts make. 🙂

You know, like most people, I'm not a fan of New York Knicks/Madison Square Garden owner James Dolan.
Today, I think he was actually somewhat justified in his "terribleness" as an owner.
Many people around the web are either expressing varying degrees of exasperation at the news that Knicks didn't offer coveted free agent/icon Kevin Durant a "max contract," which presumably prompted Durant to sign where he was offered one (in this case, Brooklyn, where he'll sign a 4-year, $162m deal). Yeah, it sucks for Knicks fans that they don't get Durant after pining for him for at least a year but I think there's one major thing that people calling for Dolan's head (on this issue, anyway) are overlooking: Durant will miss the entirety of next season after tearing an Achilles tendon in the NBA Finals a few weeks ago.
I think there are two folds to how the injury effected the Knicks' approach to Durant:
1) they didn't want to pay $40m for a guy who won't actually be on the floor next year (NBA contracts are guaranteed, regardless of whether a player is on the court or not)
2) given the nature of the injury, Durant may never be "the same" player that he was before the injury and given that, they didn't want to pay $162m for the professional athlete's equivalent of "a lemon" (automobile)
We are all thoroughly aware of how transcendent a talent that Kevin Durant has been during his career. Before his spate of injuries last season, he was quite probably the best player in the NBA and was still "pretty good" after them, until the last one sat him down for good. The thing is, even with the tremendous advances in medical technology, surgery, rehabilitation, etc., recovering from a torn Achilles is STILL a significant injury that many, many people never completely recover from. A professional athlete's health at present AND going forward are major factors in the contracts that they sign. Given how many players never fully make it back from Achilles injuries, I think it's well justifiable that they didn't want want to spend a boatload of salary on a superstar who "MIGHT" be able to live up to his talent on the floor. As I said, Kevin Durant is a truly special player who's had an excellent career but will he still be that special when he finally takes the floor again in the 2020-21 NBA season (when he'll be 32 years old)? The Knicks weren't willing to gamble on that, even when other teams were. Despite the tremendous criticism of this particular move, I don't think it's egregiously bad of them. IF worse comes to worse and Durant really never is the same player that he was before tearing his Achilles, the move will look like a damn good dodged bullet by the Knicks.......but nobody will ever really give them credit on it. Of course, if the opposite proves true and Durant still remains a top 3 player in the league, it will be viewed like typical "lolKnicks" bungling.
Call me crazy but I'd have also been very wary about paying $40m for a guy who you KNOW won't play next season and ANOTHER $40m the year after when he MIGHT not be nearly as good as advertised (because of the prior major injury).
Mind you, I'm of the opinion that the New York Knicks would be much, MUCH better off if the Dolan family had never purchased them and as I alluded to, James Dolan is one of the singularly worse franchise owners in American sports. However, I don't think they're "wrong" for not pulling the trigger on a Durant max deal.
The Nets were obviously willing to take that gamble and, well, best of luck to them on it. I feel that Durant's explosive athleticism will be gone or otherwise greatly diminished upon his return but as long as he has that sweet, sweet jumper and doesn't suddenly shrink 4 few inches, he'll still probably be "pretty good." Will he be $40m/year, carry the team on your back to the Finals kind of good? I guess we'll know in two years.

I could only imagine any meeting Durant had with the Knicks immediately made him the smartest person in the room. After the Knicks parted ways with Carmelo (and arguably before that as well) they put themselves in a pretty bad "shituation" that they couldn't escape with current ownership. Basically, whoever they drafted or acquired with big money would automatically be forced to become the "savior" of their franchise because fuck all logic when it comes to actually building a team, right?
Durant comes out of this as the realist here. He's currently on the road to recovery after a career-altering injury and won't be playing next season. I don't doubt for a minute that he'll also lose a step in his game because of it. These facts do not bode well for the position that the Knicks wanted him to assume.
Brooklyn on the other hand IS in a much better position to acquire his services. He's joining what is already and budding supporting cast for the Nets along with Kyrie and DeAndre coming over as well to hold the fort down until he returns to the court and serve as added benefit for a team that did make the playoffs this season without either of them. This is an obvious no-brainer situation for Durant and, even if he comes back at 80% of his potential, it would still make him one of the most dominant players in the Eastern Conference which has the easier road to the Finals (for now).

Happy Bobby Bonilla Day ya'll.
We may not see eye to eye on all sports, but we can at least all laugh at the Mets during this time of the year.

NBA free agency just gave me vertigo following where everyone went!
Kawhi is the big finish and I really hope he doesn't go to LA. Just for "balancing" purposes and parity with other teams, that feels almost obscene and worse than anything the Warriors put together as they still had to rely on bench depth more than huge "A" level superstars joining up. Kawhi + Lebron + AD seems even more of a squash than Lebron + Wade + Bosh with the difference curently being the Heat had more roster depth than the Lakers have right now. Though reports of Iguodala joining the Lakers is just even more horrifying for parity. I feel like Kawhi wants to lead his own team like he did this season but it also seems he just wants to be in LA and I don't think the Clippers make sense when the Lakers are already loaded with two icons.
I'm glad Durant left the Warriors cause it just felt like he needed to go elsewhere. I hope he can heal as well as possible and comes back as much like himself as anyone could after that injury. I also hope that Kyrie doesn't alienate himself from the Nets as much as he did from the Celtics and then leave before Durant returns 🤦♂️
Horford on the 76'ers is a pretty big move. Not only does that meant he will no longer check Embiid but it also means that Embiid can rest more which he drastically needs. Philly losing Redick will hurt them though. They no longer have reliable outside shooting to pair with Embiid's inside threat.
Rose on the Pistons is interesting and if he continues his slow return to effectiveness, he could be an interesting teammate with Griffin and Drummons.
As for the Knicks... their fans are basically having as much fun with them as Homer Simpson did in NYC.

Wow, Kawhi and Paul George to the Clippers 😲
West is going to be crazy unpredictable and even more competitive this year and the East just lost a top team. Philly and Milwaukee have both got to be really happy right now.
Thunder gets a ton of draft picks and I just can't help but think Westbrook will be on the way out. I believe he's friends with Lebron too. Imagine if he got traded to the Lakers for a ton of money and more draft picks? Thunder would be THA FUTURE but the Lakers would dominate.
