Does a font need to be saved in a special location to be used on custom name plates? I do not get any font choices in the drop down menu when trying to use this option.

No, fonts don't even need to be saved anywhere in particular to simply be installed on your system (like I just install mine from the downloads folder and then delete the file), so something else must be wrong.

You may want to redownload the newest modpack and repatch.

When you install a new font be certain to select the option "Install for all users" and not just simply "Install" or it may not show up in the nameplates font list.
