I guess it becomes a question of faster grapples or longer subs, then. Using the no lock up mod makes slow grapples unbearable as well. Grapples go at a speed juuuust fine on Level 4. That's why people settled on level 4 back then, it was the point at which grapples didn't take 2 seconds to resolve, and allowed for longer subs, and fixed the then issue of the constant ToS's. I personally think that's still too slow ( I don't want to see the ai taking time to resolve grapples), but to each their own I guess.

Grapples still take WAAAAY too long on level 4 if you're using the no-lockup mod. They'll still animate walking into each other for like a second...it's absolutely stupid looking.
On top of that, I like the slide to the ropes mechanic, which barely exists on any level below 7 because the AI doesn't push buttons fast enough to make it a thing.

I was very much an acolyte of 4, but now am all about 8.
For what it's worth.
I mean, this is changing like twenty years of "4 is the one," so it's a pretty big deal.

Even after decades of playing this game, this guide is still handy to have. Thanks again for this, guys!

I have a few question...
In the guide it says " IMPORTANT: For some reason some of the move categories in FPW refer to the middle column as "Large" damage and the far right column as "Critical" Damage....but for the purposes of this guide I will always refer to the three columns from left to right as small, medium and large damage."
How do we handle the Opp. Critical Condition sections? Do we pretend that it says Medium and Large? What is Critical Condition? Does it happen often in a normal match, or is it pretty rare?

Opponent Critical is basically 'Near Death' in hp terms.
In areas that have only Large/Critical, Large is basically 'I'll do this for the bulk of the match!' and Critical is 'I'll swap to this when they're dying!'

Again, thanks for this guide. I have been using it for a few years now and I am always finding something I didn't pay attention to before.
