Still reading Death of the Territories, got a bit of a laugh out of this quote near the end of the wrestlemania chapter, especially after trying to watch the new NXT to check out the Steiner boy and in the context of some of the odd choices they’ve been making despite record profits. 🤣
“In the long run, I think the WWF is going to fall flat on its face. They do the oddest things- with one hand they’re doing a lot for themselves, but with the other hand they’re taking it away.”- Max Rottersman, Arizona Republic, April 5, 1985”

Finally finished Death of the Territories, pretty good read, McMahon’s national expansion completely changed the game and left many a successful promoter reeling and unable to adapt. Some started to catch on when it was too late, Bill Watts (what an interesting dude he was…), Jim crocket, and to a lesser extent, Verne Gagne, but Vince was inventing the game as it played out, no one else stood a chance. It’s odd how traditional pro wrestling critics pretty much unanimously agreed that the WWF product was cartoonish and bad, but Vince was selling HIS version of pro wrestling to non traditional fans and continued to take over the world. It was like taking on the burger restaurant market and convincing people that burgers are obsolete, and what they really want is this fancy looking but pretty generic tasting pizza Vince has. He paved over pro wrestling and recreated it in his vision using recognizable faces from all over North America. His tactics were ballsey and very risky, but he made all of the right moves AT THE RIGHT TIME because of his forward thinking and recognition of the great potential for the utilization of new media platforms (cable, PPV, etc) to put WWF on top, and by a very large margin.
It was interesting how the NWA, once a strong, old boys club, basically crumbled at the first bit of pressure then turned on itself from the inside. It’s such a storied name with a cool heritage, but it buckled in a hurry when WWF proved that money talks and quickly started harvesting every territory’s top names to fill all star cards across the continent. I still can’t see how the WWF isn’t a monopoly and how it skirted around legal repercussions over accusations of being a monopoly, but here they are now, still around in whatever form it is they have today.
Cool book, totally worth a read, a great way to get an overview who’s who of the territory days and the promoters involved, while at the same time watching the mechanics of a driven man and his organization plow into and ultimately decimate his competition by any means necessary. Some of the stats are a bit dry, but they do support increases and decreases in gates and business at various times.
Well worth checking out if you’re a fan of wrestling history and how we ended up watching/being left with basically one promotion, love it or hate it, until very recently.

OrochiGeese BakFuGlad that album is still remembered fondly. The years where I did FPM and the Goosey Awards with the FPCPP were crazy... so much creativity and output just pouring out of every corner of the community. Things were firing on all cylinders. In case anyone hasn't seen it... some random site found and reviewed the album a few years ago. A very interesting read seeing an outsider discover our weird little album. www.originalsoundversion.com/collaborative-fan-album-fire-pro-m-volume-one-review/

That was a cool and, from the sounds of it, a somewhat informed and qualified review of the compilation! It was cool to see an “outsiders” ( no relation…) view on these tracks, and even cooler to have someone with no real fire pro background objectively review the subjects of the tracks without simply dismissing something he had no knowledge of as nonsense. What a cool find, thanks for sharing, and that’s some well deserved praise as well! 😁
The reviewer is interesting, that review is quite a few years removed from the release of the compilation, that’s fire pro level dedication to digging through random, amateur creations and objectively listening to and critiquing them! 😎

Just finished Pain and Passion: The History of Stampede Wrestling. Growing up in Stampede’s home province of Alberta, you can’t avoid stories about the old promotion, long standing loyalties to the Hart family amongst Albertan wrestling fans, and just the indelible mark the promotion and the family have left on pop culture and even our heritage as a province, so it was cool to finally fill in some of the blanks with information from this well written piece of history.
Stu’s early days and the genesis of the promotion were especially interesting for me, as were the profiles of the top guys of the 50s, 60s and 70s in the territory, as well as the stories about how influential their commentator Ed Whalen was as far as content went and Stu’s access to TV time slots. The chapters on Dynamite Kid and Bad News Allen were great, too, and how Dynamite helped revitalize the territory and began changing the look of wrestlers and match pacing that far back. It was cool to see how Kayfabe was still quite powerful in Bad News Allen’s run, with his bloody matches and nasty promos leading to suspensions and threats of losing licensing and TV for the promotion!
Stories of ribs and the general lunacy of the boys on the notoriously long road trips between towns and cities in the huge territory were great, as were the amazing names that went on to be huge stars in the business that spent time in our frozen and remote neck of the woods!
The last few chapters I could do without, but I guess The constant family turmoil And disagreements are part of the story. The chapter on Owen was sad, and it’s part of their history, but I could have done without dredging up that sad, dark time again.
This was a fun, interesting read that made me appreciate how well respected Stampede was in the industry globally , even if it was based in such remote, frozen wastelands, which I’m completely allowed to say because part of their old stomping ground is the place I call home. Worth a read, has some great pictures, but leaves me wanting to research specifics from almost every chapter!

I actually completely forgot this was coming. Volume 1 released last week and just happened to catch a youtube video that reminded me it was out and to order a copy today. The Rise of the Dragon: An illustrated history of House Targaryen Volume 1. Looks like it will be a fantastic addition to my collection of expanded universe source books for A Song of Fire and Ice. As I was literally typing this post I just got a notification that it has shipped from Amazon.

Novelist Will Jordan aka youtube's The Critical Drinker licensed to script a Rambo prequel graphic novel that will start following Colonel Trautman in Korea and lead up to the formation of his special unit which Rambo was a part of in Vietnam. Sylvester Stallone and Chuck Dixon wrote the story. Guaranteed buy from me.

Some nice recent pickups I just discovered: Ganbaru, a look behind the scenes at the events leading up to and following the AJPW split in 2000 and the creation of NOAH. Absolutely compelling read. Not a long one, but glad I found this book by accident when I happened to come across a tweet from the author Jonathan Foye. While I was ordering that I saw he also wrote The Muto Years. Covering the behind the scenes rise of Keiji Mutoh's prominence behind the scenes with the AJPW split. Also another short but captivating read.
Also picked up the King Conan omnibus. The 19 volume series ran originally in 1980 and covers Conan's life when he finally becomes King of Aquilonia. The omnibus took a $50 price cut so I figured I better jump on it while the getting was good as the Conan omnibus series usually go for between $150 and $190 Canadian on Amazon which is the only thing that has kept me from filling my bookcase with them.

Ganbaru sounds cool, so does Mutoh! I’d never have heard of these if you hadn’t mentioned them, thank you!

Two more spur of the moment purchases.
The Witch Hunter. I actually bought this book because it's written by one of the developers of the Battle Brothers strategy game and set in the Battle Brother's universe. Being a huge fan of the game I wanted to see the world lore expanded upon and this is definitely the book that will do it.
Also found out the BlackHearts omnibus was released in February and immediately ordered that. Set in the Warhammer Fantasy universe; when a desperate need to assemble soldiers forces conscription through prisons, a penal regiment known as the BlackHearts would be formed. The BlackHearts would go on to become a mercenary company. Pretty much the Warhammer Fantasy equivalent of Warhammer 40k's 13th Penal Legion, The Last Chancers.
Also pre-ordered Vampire Hunter D omnibus 4. I have no idea how many Vampire Hunter D novels there are, but I am going to keep getting these collections as they release as it's easier than buying the whole set in bulk down the road.

Another random graphic novel purchase. The Last Ronin. Basically a finale storyline for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles written from the original creators. It's recently been announced that there is an action RPG game based on this graphic novel in the works that is using the current God of War games as an inspiration. Forever this has been showing up in my Amazon recommendations but I always ignored it having not really followed TMNT in years. This is a must own if you're a fan of TMNT. All the recommendations and praise this has been getting are spot on. What a story. Set not too far into the future, New York is a dystopia and three of the four turtles are dead. The story picks up with the surviving turtle, who is not revealed which one of the turtles he is, on a quest for revenge. Now wearing a black mask and utilizing the signature weapons of all four turtles this is quite far removed from the campy cartoon turtles and we go dark and violent with plenty of pull no punches action. This actually reignited my love of TMNT and I may undergo the arduous task of collecting all the old, more mature, IDW Ninja Turtle compilations.
A prequel comic to The Last Ronin is also in the works, so I have that pre-ordered as well.

The recent idw comics were pretty good I followed those for awhile. It had one of the original creators involved. From what I heard this sounds like it's the closest to the original turtle comics they've been since the original cartoon started. I still need to check it out.

Last Ronin looks bad ass, I wonder if the game will be worth a shit or not. Could you imagine if spawn got the Nickelodeon makeover ninja turtles did in the 90s? The source material was pretty dark and gritty, next thing you know, they’re skateboarding and pounding pizza in the sewer! This will be a nice return to form, glad to see Eastman and Laird set their differences aside and hadn’t fully sold their souls. I’d like to check this out!

Damn, just found out from the man himself, Chuck Dixon is returning to do another Conan series. Just ordered the first volume. He mentions it's only supposed to be a trilogy but he likes returning to Conan so much it could end up being more. Also Chuck talks about meeting Sylvester Stallone, writing an Expendables prequel comic and the upcoming Rambo: First Kill comic about the origins of Trautman in Korea and Rambo in Vietnam.

Graphic novel #2 in the Street Fighter Origins series about to release in a few days. I'm hoping that all the characters get one of these books. The first one was Akuma and now Sagat is about to release. Basically each comic is the origin story of the character but they are taking forever to release, with only two done in five years. Hopefully they pick up the pace if they plan on doing all the characters.
Also Matt Wagner himself announced yesterday on twitter that he has redone a new and expanded edition of Grendel: Devil by the Deed, expanding the Hunter Rose story with all new content. Can't wait, already have it pre-ordered for the Fall.
