Still processing Chadwick Boseman's sudden passing. I can't match the tributes that have been written and spoken about him by seemingly everyone he's ever worked with, but suffice to say he was special, and that shone through whatever role he played. He could grab you and hold your attention no matter what he was doing.
That he did so much of his iconic work while actively and secretly battling cancer is mind-boggling. That's actual superhero-level stuff. And I have to wonder if part of his motivation was for the focus to be on the characters he was playing and what they meant instead of on his personal struggle.
It's still just hard to believe. He still seemed like the future, and now he's gone. It feels like it shouldn't work this way.

Bob Gibson is one of those sports legends that I would listen to or read anything about for hours. The man was a nigh immaculate force on the mound for the Cardinals championship teams of the 60s and was so effective that baseball changed the mound to give hitters a better chance against him (and other star of the day, though he was without question THE ace of the infamous "year of the pitcher," 1968). He passed away today at the age of 84, having battled pancreatic cancer. I am glad to be of an age to have developed a love of the game of baseball and am fortunate to have a father who spent time instilling the lore of the game in me. Gibson was one of his favorites and although he retired 9 years before I was born, in many ways, he was one of mine.
RIP Hoot

Man, that hurts. 90 is a great run, but it still sucks. I watched all of the bond movies (many for the first time) after roger Moore died, I love this scene and marked out hard when I saw who bond was up against! The infamous Barbara Walters Sean Connery interview is a good example of an old school, macho dude digging his heels in when someone puts him on the spot and calls him out on his comments. Kafabe spilled over into mainstream media back the I guess... 🙄 m.youtube.com/watch?v=mzXkbJwrN38RIP

I seem to remember El Marsh saying he competed in the college tournament one year. I'd like to hear what that was like, and what Alex was like.

Bit late in replying but yeah, I did the tournament many years ago now. My only direct interaction with Alex was when we did the "tell us about yourself" bit. It was really cool meeting him and chatting with him for just those 20 or so seconds. I was nervous as all get out so it was a bit awkward but Alex being who he was just moved it along flawlessly (for me, it was a bit overwhelming but I doubt I'd have rated anywhere in his top 1000 awkward intros lol). All of the contestants were introduced to him as a group before the tapings began and after each show, he did the little mock talk thing with the game's contestants as they film the outro.
As for my impression of him from up close, the man was "charm" personified. One thing that I got to see while waiting for my game was that between tapings and before he went to re-wardrobe, he'd entertain the audience for about 5 minutes. On one occasion he explained how the tapings worked and how much of it they did, on another one, he entertained questions from the crowd, and on another he effectively did a standup routine. Dude was pretty great at all of it and the crowd ate it up. I remember one of the audience questions being about the then-recently defeated Ken Jennings' run on the show and Alex was a pretty good sport about it despite undoubtedly having been asked about it a literal thousand times between the start of Jennings' run and the point where my appearance was. The dignified, cheeky air that I'd seen from him on TV all of my life took a new meaning as I came to see that even when the cameras weren't rolling, that was who he was (at least around the public) and it somehow made it all the more endearing.

Thank you for that great post, Marsh! It's really cool that you had that experience.
I watch Jeopardy just about every weekday so the news hit me hard when I found out last week.
R.I.P. Alex Trebek.
