I've been binging old school kung-fu films. Some of them from Shaw brothers with the Venom Mob like The Kid With the Golden Arm, Invincible Shaolin, Executioners from Shaolin and White Lotus Clan.
I also watched No Retreat, No Surrender thanks with hep from the guys from Rifftrax.
Nice picks so far, I’m assuming you’ve checked out 36 Chambers (see avatar...) , Master of the Flying Guillotine, King Boxer (or Five Fingers of Death), one armed swordsman, and some of the other standards? A couple other suggestions I could offer are John Woo’s early, pre bullet ballet period piece Last Hurrah for Chivalry (the title song by Roman Tam is so bad ass, too!), Prodigal Son and Magnificent Butcher if, no, BECAUSE YOU ARE a Samo Hung fan, and of course Drunken Master 1 and 2 (Jackie is out of 2, also known as dance of the drunk mantis, but it’s a great film, in ways better than the first! The awesome Yuen Siu-Tien plays beggar So again, and his son, Yuen Woo Ping is the director!). Iron Monkey featuring Donny Yen is another really solid pick! Hope you can find these and enjoy them! Sorry, had to add a teaser, Beggar So and Rubber Legs get together for a “drink” in drunken master 2 / dance of the drunk mantis. Such epic shit. 😎

WOW! That is great news because I'm sure the movie would be awesome and maybe...just maybe...it would give us a Sleeping Dogs sequel!! I've actually been playing it again over the past few months and it completely holds up too. I'd love a sequel and maybe that can happen if the movie does well enough 😎

So they would have to find the right studio to take that over.

Yeah, I should probably clarify, this is the third time I've gone through a kung fu movie binge. In my early 20s I would record a ton of movies that came on a Drive In Classics channel in Canada plus I would pick up cheap DVDs at Wal-Mart. That's where I became familiar with Brucepliotation (Bruce Lee, We Miss You; Blind Fists of Bruce; Bruce Li In New Guinea) and I discovered Bolo Yeung. I knew him from Enter the Dragon and Bloodsport; but I was able to see Bolo and The Chinese Hercules as well as Breathing Fire and I think it was called Bloodfight. It was about a karate fighter who owned a school, his pupil was killed by Bolo and he sacrificed everything including his marriage to avenge his student. I forget the guys' name but he played the uncle of the Japanese girl from Jet Li's Fist of Legend.
Then a couple of years ago I went through another binge on Netflix which is where I watched a ton of Shaw Bros. including the Five Venoms, The 36th Chamber Trilogy (I recognized the avatar. :) Disciples is probably my least favorite. I also saw Come Drink With Me and The Flying Guillotine, and I watched the sequel although I forget the name of it.
I also saw Magnificent Butcher (Loved the transitions from style to style in the final fight and wasn't there a drunken master? I saw Iron Monkey way back in the day, great example of wire-fu...Iron Monkey is one of the reasons why I made the Buddha Palm in Move Craft for Fire Pro :)
Some of the memorable titles that have stuck with me include the following:
-36th Chamber of Shaolin -Shaolin vs Lama -Shaolin vs Ninja -Dragon Lee vs the Five Brothers -Tattoo Connection (Not great, but I liked Jim Kelly from Enter the Dragon so it was neat to him in a starring role) -Blood of the Dragon (First film I watched starring Jimmy Wang Yu) -Bruce Li in New Guinea (This movie is hokey but I loved it when I was younger and Bruce Li was my favorite of the Bruce impersonators) -Project A (The stunt with the clock tower was sick)
-Silver Fox Rivals II (The rapey villian from Magnificant Butcher played a hero in this one) -Militant Eagle (This one is probably my favorite, there are probably better films, but this one grabbed me early. I think it was the uniqueness of the heroes and villains) -Prodigal Boxer (I liked the premise, mom was a good kung fu fighter, father was a wimp, son learned from the mom and his immaturity led to struggle which he overcame by growing up through tragedy). -Legend of the Red Dragon (I owned it on VHS...but when I watched it on Tubi, there was way more sexual content than on the VHS tape.)
Enough of my rambling...

And hopefully it would contain some people from the old studio.

Yeah, not feeling Leto for this, or in general. He’s like Nicholas Cage lite, ubiquitous mediocrity.
I have a soft spot for Tron, I love that Daft Punk scored the last one (the cameo was the shit!), I want to support the series, but I just don’t see how I can be interested with that weenie in the lead spot. I did watch Netflix’ the Outsider, and I didn’t totally hate it (got shit on HARD by critics), but yeah, not a fan of the guy.
The animated show was pretty good though!

Yasuaki Kurata. The guy was amazing and had a great career mostly playing Japanese heavies in Chinese kung fu flicks. He's actually still making action movies in his 70s.

If you haven't seen it, Kurata stars alongside Gordon Liu (Pai Mei in Kill Bill) in the simply awesome Shaw Brothers flick Heroes of the East, which is also sometimes known as Shaolin Challenges Ninja. Totally worth seeking out.

I don' think that's fair to leto. i don't like him as a person and alot of his roles leave ALOT to be desired, but when he wants to, he can turn it on. i guess he needs the right roles. he was good in american psycho and panic room. downright AMAZING is requiem for a dream and absolutely earned that oscar for dallas buyers club. that is only like 3 good performances in a 20 year career tho. but after writing that, i guess your nic cage comparison is spot on, since he does the same shit haha.

I've liked a lot of Jared Leto's movies but his name is far too close to Jay Leno so I could never say I like him as a human being.
